PRIDE or COURAGE?

June is “gay pride” month. On the one hand, “pride” can be considered something good: a parent can be proud of a child who has performed well in school, a factory worker can be proud of producing a well-functioning product, or an army general may be proud of his troops and their service to their nation. However, pride can also be a sin. The Catechism of the states: “Pride is undue self-esteem or self-love, which seeks attention and honor and sets oneself in competition with God” (#1866). In other words, the sin of “pride” can set oneself over others and become self-centeredness. I believe the “gay pride” movement has drifted toward the sinful version. All people, no matter what their orientation, are sons and daughters of God… but God has a specific plan for human sexuality and love: “from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’” (Mark 10:6-8).

“Courage” is the way to go… not simply the virtue of courage, but the Catholic organization known as Courage International. Courage is dedicated to Catholics who have same-sex attractions (i.e., gays and lesbians). Courage does not seek to change the orientation of anyone, values everyone as children of God, and provides opportunities for friendship and discipleship in Christ, living a fully Catholic life in accord with the teachings of the Church. Thousands of Catholic gays and lesbians have found a home in the Catholic Church through Courage. You can find out more at CourageRC.org online, where you will find numerous resources that will benefit our brothers and sisters who have same-sex attractions. Courage International even offers retreats and conferences! There are also resources for parents of children who have same-sex attractions (EnCourage)!

Some excellent/positive/faithful/valuable resources I would highly recommend: VIDEO: Desire of the Everlasting Hills (www.everlastinghills.org) BOOK: Living the Truth in Love: Pastoral Approaches to Same-Sex Attraction BOOK: The Truth about : The Cry of the Faithful (Fr. John Harvey)

The teaching of Jesus and the Catholic Church is clear: (1) we do NOT hate, (2) every person, no matter what their orientation, is a child of God, (3) those with same-sex attractions are human beings who deserve respect, and (4) these men and women possess valuable gifts that help society and contribute to the common good. However, Jesus and the Church also teach that (5) marriage is only between one man and one woman, (6) urges can be resisted with the grace of God, (7) all people are called to chastity, and (8) sexual acts between persons of the same gender are not envisioned by God’s plan for the human race. This dichotomy may produce some level of confusion, yet the confusion can be overcome… not with pride, but with Courage! -Father Zientarski

Pastor’s Letter 6-16-2019

DUE TO LAST WEEK’S PRINTING ERROR, THE LETTER FROM LAST WEEK IS ADDED BELOW.

Dear Parishioners,

Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers here at the parish! We hope you enjoy your day!

And now for some “father” news… First, I recently heard from Father O’Brien and am happy to say he has just completed his first year of studies in Rome and will be returning home to Long Island soon. I invited him to come visit us here when he has a chance and said he looks forward to coming to the parish feast!

Father O’Brien’s successor, Father Ryszard, has now departed from our parish, re-assigned to St. Ignatius in Long Beach. In recent weeks, he became increasingly disgruntled and it was best for both him and us that he move on early. Let us pray for him.

Father Sylvester and I will handle parish duties between now and the end of June, when our new priest will join us. Fr. Sylvester will be transferring to St. Martin’s in Bethpage on August 1, so we will be blessed with his presence until then. As always, we will have Fr. Sebastian will us for the months of July and August; he’s been our summer assistant for many years here at St. Christopher’s and we are grateful for his help.

Father Celestine Nwosu, a Nigerian priest from the Diocese of Orlu, will be our new assistant pastor. Father Celestine is 45 years old and his birthday is July 4th! He has been a priest for 16 years, like me, and has had several parish assignments over the years. We’ll be learning more about him as he joins us on June 26th. I know that you will welcome him and help him adjust to American life here in Baldwin.

Many of the parishes in our diocese are welcoming “fathers” from Nigeria and other countries where there is an abundance of priests. Quite frankly, we simply don’t have the numbers of American priests as we had in the past. While we are ordaining six men on June 22nd—which is great—we really need 10 new priests every year to meet the needs of our diocese. Our diocese has approximately 1.4 million Catholics… why can’t we muster 10 vocations a year? May I ask that we all pray for the young men of our parishes, that they may seriously consider saying yes to a wonderful life as a priest, serving as “father” for the people of God here on Long Island? And may we not be afraid to encourage vocations from our families… our sons, grandsons, nephews, and friends. I can tell you that being a priest is great: I have been privileged to see God working so many times in people’s lives and have met wonderful people and have had wonderful experiences. Pray for vocations! Encourage our young men to become priests!

Angels and Archangels Donantions 2019 St. Christopher’s Feast Angels and Archangels Donations

You may not be able to help out physically with the Feast, or may want to do more this year. In either case, you can support the Feast by donating to our Angels and Archangels Fund. Both Angels and Archangels enable us to help supply our booths, games, and food with necessary items to make them function properly and make the Feast a memorable event. All Angels and Archangels will have the special honor of their names displayed in the booth of their choice. All Angels and Archangels donations may be made by an individual, family, or business for a loved one living, or deceased. Please return the form below, with your donation, as soon as possible so the name can be printed before the Feast.

My thanks in advance; for I know each family will do all they can to make our Feast the best ever. You may mail your form, drop it in the collection basket, or return it to the rectory as soon as possible. Thank you one and all!

God Bless, Rev. Nicholas Zientarski
