It is surprising how after twenty-five years the Constitutions still have the same freshness and authenticity as when they were first approved and pub - lished. They were composed through dialog, discernment and prayer during the General Chapter of 1982 that was celebrated at Sts. John and Paul, I remember the enthusiasm of the Chapter, the first one that I attended. The Constitutions were the fruit of a process that began during the years fol - lowing World War II and which received significant growth with Pope John XXIII and with the celebration of Vatican Council II.     Katherine Stewart/March 9, 2021 How Big Money Is Dividing American Catholicism A schism in the faith between liberals and conservatives is being exacerbated by a group of plutocrats. “This is what they have done,” Robert Busch writes with weary outrage as he forwards me a photograph of a group of nuns, one of them wearing a “Stop the Steal” button, cheerfully joining President Trump’s January 6 rally in Washington, D.C. Busch, who lives in Redwood City, California, recently formed a study group on economic justice within the Thomas Merton Center, which collaborates with members of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Palo Alto. Like most of his fellow study group members, he calls himself a “Francis Catholic,” in deference to Pope Francis. He has more of a natural affinity with the “Nuns on the Bus”—a Catholic group that advocates for a range of social justice issues—than with the “Stop the Steal” sisters. He usually has at the tip of his tongue a citation from any number of writings in the long tradition of Catholic social teachings. He remains personally opposed to abortion but rejects its political use as a wedge issue. Just a few miles up the road, in Napa, a man named Timothy Busch—no relation to Robert— hosts annual conferences for Catholic leaders through an organization he co-founded, the Napa Institute. Timothy Busch’s interpretation of the faith is pretty clearly at odds with Robert’s. As Timothy Busch sees it, Catholicism takes a dim view of labor unions and raising the minimum wage, is in favor of “right to work” laws, and absolutely rejects political leaders who fail to be strictly anti-abortion.

Father Philip Bochanski, who has served the Courage apostolate for over a decade – first as chaplain, and eventually as the executive director – will receive the Cross on December 9, 2019, during Vespers at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. The Cross will be conferred by Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap., on behalf of Pope Francis. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s November 25 statement acknowledged Father Bochanski’s years of service to men and women who experience same-sex attractions, adding: “He has worked tirelessly, with compassion and great sensitivity, to advance Church teaching on human sexuality, and gained national respect for the Courage apostolate in the process.” On receiving the announcement of the award, Father Bochanski said: "I am deeply grateful to Pope Francis for awarding me the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. My service to the Courage and EnCourage apostolate over the years has been a tremendous privilege and the part of my priestly ministry in which I feel most like a true spiritual father. The director of Courage International talks about the work of the apostolate in addressing homosexuality according to the mind and heart of the Church, which he calls “one of the most demanding aspects of education, formation, and pastoral care today.” But it is also an opportunity to attend to the often acute and persistent wounds of those who need healing within what Pope Francis calls the “field hospital” of the Church. The author points out that the work of Courage is not first about homosexuality but about what it means to be human. It is an invitation to consider the question of the fulfill- ment of the human heart according to God’s gracious plan.
