  • A Way of Life for Young Catholics
1 A WAY OF LIFE FOR YOUNG CATHOLICS Fr Stephen Wang This Way of Life is written for young Catholics who want to live their faith more deeply but are not sure what steps to take. It contains practical, down-to-earth advice on all sorts of issues that come up in the lives of young Catholics, whether those issues are spiritual (‘How to pray’, ‘How to go to confession’) or moral (‘How to deal with alcohol and drugs’, ‘How far can I go with my boyfriend or girlfriend?’) or emotional (‘How to stop worrying’, ‘How to cope with suffering’) or vocational (‘How to discover my vocation’, ‘How to find a good husband or wife’). This booklet is not for experts, but for ordinary young people who have been touched by God in some way but are not sure how to respond. It will be especially helpful for older confirmation candidates, for students at college and university, and for young adults who are hoping to learn more about their faith and put it into practice in the reality of their daily lives. Fr Stephen Wang is a priest in the Diocese of Westminster. He has worked in parish ministry and seminary formation, and is currently Senior University Chaplain in his Diocese. He is the author of How to Discover Your Vocation and The New Evangelisation. [This booklet is published by the Catholic Truth Society. It is used here with permission from the author. • Courage to Celebrate 40 Years of Ministry, Moves Yearly Conference Online
June 30, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Courage to celebrate 40 years of ministry, moves yearly conference online Media coordinator: Ann Schneible, director of communications [email protected] Office: +1 (203) 916-1156 (Trumbull, CT) In response to safety concerns relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, Courage International will kick off its 40th anniversary celebrations with an online webinar, instead of an in-person conference as originally planned, for members, chaplains, and friends of the apostolate. Set to take place over Zoom on July 25-26, the theme of the 2020 Courage and EnCourage Conference is “40 Years of Courage: A Legacy of Hope”, marking four decades of pastoral care for men and women who experience same-sex attractions (SSA). “This year's anniversary offers us a chance to celebrate the witness of our members, whose bravery and resilience should be an inspiration to every Christian who wishes to fully understand and live the virtue of chastity,” said Father Philip Bochanski, executive director of Courage International. The Courage apostolate was founded by Fr. John Harvey, OSFS in September 1980 at the request of the late Cardinal Terence Cooke, then the archbishop of New York City. “Over these past 40 years, we've seen Courage grow from humble beginnings with a few members in a small Manhattan office, to an international apostolate with chapters in nearly 20 countries,” Father Bochanski said. The Courage and EnCourage conference, which is held annually, was originally set to take place at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (also known as Mundelein Seminary) in Mundelein, IL from July 23- 26, 2020.

  • How Big Money Is Dividing American Catholicism a Schism in the Faith Between Liberals and Conservatives Is Being Exacerbated by a Group of Plutocrats
Katherine Stewart/March 9, 2021 How Big Money Is Dividing American Catholicism A schism in the faith between liberals and conservatives is being exacerbated by a group of plutocrats. “This is what they have done,” Robert Busch writes with weary outrage as he forwards me a photograph of a group of nuns, one of them wearing a “Stop the Steal” button, cheerfully joining President Trump’s January 6 rally in Washington, D.C. Busch, who lives in Redwood City, California, recently formed a study group on economic justice within the Thomas Merton Center, which collaborates with members of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Palo Alto. Like most of his fellow study group members, he calls himself a “Francis Catholic,” in deference to Pope Francis. He has more of a natural affinity with the “Nuns on the Bus”—a Catholic group that advocates for a range of social justice issues—than with the “Stop the Steal” sisters. He usually has at the tip of his tongue a citation from any number of writings in the long tradition of Catholic social teachings. He remains personally opposed to abortion but rejects its political use as a wedge issue. Just a few miles up the road, in Napa, a man named Timothy Busch—no relation to Robert— hosts annual conferences for Catholic leaders through an organization he co-founded, the Napa Institute. Timothy Busch’s interpretation of the faith is pretty clearly at odds with Robert’s. As Timothy Busch sees it, Catholicism takes a dim view of labor unions and raising the minimum wage, is in favor of “right to work” laws, and absolutely rejects political leaders who fail to be strictly anti-abortion.

  • November 26, 2019 for IMMEDIATE RELEASE Courage's Executive Director to Receive Cross Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice (Trumbull
November 26, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Courage’s executive director to receive Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Trumbull, Conn.) Courage International’s executive director will be among the latest recipients of the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, an honor conferred by Pope Francis on those who have given distinguished service to the Roman Catholic Church. Father Philip Bochanski, who has served the Courage apostolate for over a decade – first as chaplain, and eventually as the executive director – will receive the Cross on December 9, 2019, during Vespers at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. The Cross will be conferred by Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap., on behalf of Pope Francis. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s November 25 statement acknowledged Father Bochanski’s years of service to men and women who experience same-sex attractions, adding: “He has worked tirelessly, with compassion and great sensitivity, to advance Church teaching on human sexuality, and gained national respect for the Courage apostolate in the process.” On receiving the announcement of the award, Father Bochanski said: "I am deeply grateful to Pope Francis for awarding me the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. My service to the Courage and EnCourage apostolate over the years has been a tremendous privilege and the part of my priestly ministry in which I feel most like a true spiritual father. I see this special gesture of the Holy Father as an honor for the whole Courage and EnCourage family, a public recognition of the way in which our shared pursuit of holiness, and our commitment to speaking and living the truth in love, are always at the service of the Gospel, of the Church, and of the Pope and bishops.

  • Retreats and Conferences Summary
Retreats and Conferences Summary There is a lot of confusion about the many retreats and conferences that are available for Directors of Youth Ministry and young people across the country. Below is a summary of the many opportunities that are available each year along with an editorial on each by Kevin Bohli. I would recommend that each Director of Youth Ministry and youth ministry volunteer attend at least one conference and one spiritual retreat every year. You should speak with your pastors about paying for these activities out of the youth ministry budget. Youth Ministry Conferences for Adults Conferences are a great opportunity to learn new ministry practices, to spend time with thousands of other youth ministers who share your joys and struggles, and to make contacts with organizations, speakers, or performers from across the country. They also help to motivate you to become recommitted to your ministry and help prevent burnout. • Youth Specialties National Youth Workers Convention – each year there are three of these conferences in the fall…one on the west coast, one in the Midwest, and one on the east coast. Go to www.youthspecialties.com for more information and for this year’s dates. Each conference consists of about 3000 youth workers from all Christian denominations. This conference is supposed to be “inter-denominational”, but you will find that Catholics are poorly represented when it comes to the entertainment, speakers, and resources. The talks and resources are excellent training on the basics of youth ministry, and in identifying the behavior of adolescents today, but everything must be taken with a “grain of salt” and you need to modify what you hear to apply the practices and ideas in your Catholic youth program.
