Item CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND AREA COMMITTEE Report CS/2/14 No 11TH FEBRUARY 2014 POPULATION CHANGE IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND 2001 TO 2011 Report by Director of Planning and Development Summary This report looks at the early results from the 2011 Census, giving local information on the number and ages of people living within Highland. It compares these figures with those from 2001 to show that the Highland population has “aged”, and that a large number of people are close to retirement age. The population of Caithness and Sutherland has grown by 3.3% (compared to the Highland average of 11.1%) with an increase in four out of six Wards, and at a local level in 34 out of 58 data zones. Local population growth is strongly linked to the building of new homes. 1. Background 1.1. Publication of the results from the 2011 Census began in December 2012, and the most recent published in November and December 2013 gave the first detailed results for “census output areas”, the smallest areas for which results are published. These detailed results have enabled us to prepare the first 2011 Census profiles and these are available for Wards, Associated School Groups, Community Councils and Settlement Zones on our website at: link to census profiles 1.2. This report returns to some earlier results and looks at how the age profile of the Caithness and Sutherland population and the total numbers have changed at a local level (datazones). These changes are summarised in Briefing Note 57 which is attached at Appendix 1. -

Migdale Hospital A Case Study 1 Migdale Hospital Overview The replacement of the Migdale Hospital in Bonar Bridge is a good example of a rural community hospital and sets a helpful precedent for community facilities in remote locations. The product of 15 years work, the project involved considerable consultation with community groups, local councillors, staff, patients, and patient representatives before being constructed and completed in June 2011. The new facility replaces an older hospital building, originally designed as a Victorian ‘Poorhouse’ to support and provide housing for the dependent or needy. A decision was made to sell the original hospital which had become unfit for purpose. This was in part due to restrictions caused by the narrow corridors, 4 and 5 bed wards, inadequate sanitary facilities and split-level Front elevation of Migdale hospital, accommodation, all of which affected the use by long-stay elderly patients. overlooking the Kyle of Sutherland Retention would require a total refurbishment which was deemed unviable. Image credit: John Paul Photography It was considered that a new hospital could more easily provide better integrated care and single-bed rooms, in line with Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorate (SGHSCD) policy. The new Migdale hospital is a 22-bed community health unit serving the north and west areas of NHS Highland. The hospital has two wards: an Older Adult Mental Health Assessment Unit (Strathy) and a GP Acute Unit (Kyelsku). A number of outpatient services are also provided including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Rehabilitation Classes, and Memory Clinics. Built on a steeply sloping site in Bonar Bridge, the hospital lies close to the main travel routes between Inverness and the North and West of Scotland. -

Williamson on the Highland Railways, and the Thurso Branch Line. Born in London “within the sounds of Paddington Station”, he spent many days in Euston Station, with a platform ticket and a lunch box, watching all the comings and goings. In 1953 he got his first camera and when on holiday in Thurso, he photographed the Station and quizzed the Station Master and that was the start of this project. He took many photographs with detailed descriptions written next to them, gathered cuttings from local newspapers and magazines, and researched other sources, as well as asking friends and retired Railway Staff for their memories.
