Tel: 056 776 3837 WWW.KILKENOMICS.COM 2016 Welcome to the seventh edition of Kilkenomics - Europe’s first economics festival - which brings together some of the world’s leading economists, financial analysts and media commentators with some of our funniest, sharpest standup comedians. We’ve been called “Davos with jokes” and we wouldn’t disagree with that assessment. The standups put the economists under the spotlight to talk through vital issues such as the case for a universal basic income, whether the world can cope with Brexit, whether capitalism needs a new world war to survive, the dangers of mobocracy and what economic future is promised by the new US President elect. We’re also talking Russia, neo- liberalism, the New Left and the economics of sex. When we started this festival, the world was in the grips of what seemed an unprecedented economic crisis and we asked questions like “What the hell just happened?” Seven years on the crisis doesn’t seem so unprecedented, our audiences are better informed than before but the questions still remain to be answered and we’ve got the best people available to do just that. Our informal, entertaining formats invite our audiences to engage and enjoy. As we like to say: it’s serious, but it’s fun too! Jump into Kilkenomics now and engage with as many shows as possible, equip yourself with the information and insight we hope can help us all make smart choices for our futures, inform and entertain yourselves. HERE’S A TASTE OF WHAT THE PRESS HAD TO SAY ABOUT KILKENOMICS: “Davos with jokes” “Kilkenomics is just what economics “Lenny Bruce meets John Maynard Keynes” THE AUSTRALIAN needs: an event bridging the gap between BLOOMBERG academic analysis and the ordinary people “One of the oddest festivals anywhere, whose lives are turned upside down by “Wildly successful” comedy with a pint and a point” economic mayhem.” THE GUARDIAN UK SUNDAY TIMES THE ECONOMIST “I’ve been to lots of festivals and “An utterly bizzare idea but the public love it” “A little jewel where players manage to talk conferences, but Kilkenomics may be the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE human without being patronising” best. More than that: it felt like democracy.” THE IRISH TIMES Simon Kuper, FINANCIAL TIMES columnist “Having a laugh despite the gloom” BBC WORLD SERVICE WE’D LIKE TO THANK ALL SPONSORS FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THE FESTIVAL IN 2016 PRINCIPAL SPONSORS FUNDING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL MEDIA PARTNER 2016 SPONSORS MEDIA PARTNERS VENUE DETAILS 1 Cleere’s Theatre Bar 2 The Hole in the Wall 3 The Set Theatre 4 The Ormonde Hotel (Kilbride Suite) (Kings Suite) 5 Watergate Theatre 6 The Village Inn BOOKING DETAILS Box Office: 76 John Street, Kilkenny Tel: 056 776 3837 Online booking now at WWW.KILKENOMICS.COM FESTIVAL TEAM Founder Directors: Richard Cook and David McWilliams Programme Director: Naoise Nunn Production Manager: Michael Burke Box Office Manager: Lilian Burke HAVE Festival Manager: Miriam Dunne Volunteers Manager: Tommie Ryan YOUR Festival Administration: Margaret-Mary Murphy Public Relations: Caoimhe Butler and KerryAnn Conway at Conway Communications SAY: Web and Print Design: RedLemonade.ie pitch into #kilkenomics Box Office Team: Brian Butler, Garret Brennan, Niamh Moyles, Ralph Sheehan, Paula McDonald for the latest festival shenanigans!
