In the decade 2001 to 2011, Church Langley’s population increased by over 16%, from 7650 to 8895. This was the second highest rate of growth in Harlow, second only to Old Harlow and well above the town average of 4% growth.

Church Langley was Harlow’s most populated ward in 2001 but only by a small margin. A decade of above average growth, where four out of eleven wards saw declining populations, has firmly established Church Langley as Harlow’s most populated ward.

Church Langley has the youngest overall population in Harlow with an average age of 34 years, this is significantly younger that the Town average of 38 years.

Despite having Harlow’s youngest average age, Church Langley has seen its average age rise as fast as any other ward: from 30 in 2001 to 34 in 2011. This is largely a result of the increase in residents over 64. Indeed, the number of residents over 84 years old grew by over 350% during the decade.

Church Langley was one of only two wards that saw its population of UK nationals rise from 2001 to 2011.

Since 2001 the number of Christians in Church Langley has fallen by over 5%. Yet this is a slower rate of decline than in Harlow overall, which saw the number of Christians decrease by over 14%. This period also saw significant increases in lone parent families and households where all members were over 64 years of age. Trends

During the decade 2001 to 2011 there was a significant decrease in the proportion of Harlow’s population who held no qualifications, with an overage proportional decline of approximately 6%. In Church Langley, however, the proportion of those without qualifications fell by only less 1%.

So whilst Church Langley mirrors Harlow’s trend towards higher levels of qualification, these changes were less marked due to the Ward’s comparatively high levels of education in 2001.
