The Crisis of Bengali Gentility in Calcutta Benoy Ghose The social scale and the paraphernalia of gentility are all rapidly and constantly changing, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for different income-groups of the Bengali middle-classes to keep pace with that change, particularly in urban centres like Calcutta. Bengali gentility is facing a really critical situation. And it has been made worse by the heavier influx of non-Bengalis in search of employment and almost impossible by the arrival of lakhs of Bengalis from East Pakistan who are largely concentrated in and around Calcutta. The concept of gentility moreover, is no less psychological than economic. And as the frontier of is changing and its scale is ascending, the struggle for climbing up to it and for preserving the status quo as well is becoming keener day by day. The crisis of Bengali gentility is therefore not only economic. It is a social and psychological crisis also, with all its ramifying consequences. The author is a well known writer in Bengali, and his recent study on the culture of West Bengal following his earlier survey of Bengal villages and towns, cultural and economic, is a pioneer work in the field bf Bengali letters. A Brief Resume about the Activities of the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Barrackpore, for the year 2009-10, from 1st April, 2009 to 31st March, 2010. Museums, at present, are looked upon not only as clear – houses of informations, but also centres for awareness – building regarding aspects of life and living of the whole community. Keeping this in view the Commonwealth Association of Museums in a Triennial Conference a few years back fixed the thrust for museum – Endeavour – Peace, Democracy and good Governance in the 21st Century. It was a prudent and much necessary decision that unless and until people are involved in the peace-process it would be difficult for a violence – ridden world to come out of the predicament or overcome violence and peacelessness that has put a question–mark to our survival. Interestingly in an article published in this Sangrahalaya’s quarterly bi- lingual Journal Gandhi Sangbad / Gandhi News, January- March. 2010, an Expert in the field has these to observe – “Peace is the central theme in the programme of Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Barrackpore. By presenting a great life based on the moral principles of truthfulness, non-violence, tolerance and peaceful co-existence and undertaking programmes like ‘Peace Convention’, whole-day fasting to protest against terrorism, etc., the Sangrahalaya has developed a ‘Culture of Peace’ and in this sense can be regarded as the only Peace Museum in this State”. This, however, could be one aspect of the Sangrahalaya’s activities in the financial Year 2009-10, i.e., 1st April, 2009 to 31st March, 2010. Research, Publication, Academic Exercises, educational programmes, seminars, symposiums, collaborative programmes and providing financial assistance to several Gandhian organizations in this State and also of national level like the Sarba Seva Sangh to keep up Gandhian activities marked the endeavours of this Sangrahalaya in the financial year under review. -

Preserving and Promoting the Historical Cultural Heritage
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Enlighten Preserving and promoting the historical cultural heritage of rural communities in West Bengal and Bangladesh: Report on a workshop held in Kolkata Saturday 29 April 2017 John Reuben Davies May 2017 The workshop which is the subject of this report is an outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Glasgow and the University of Calcutta, renewed 9 November 2016. The University of Glasgow and the University of Delhi also operate under a Memorandum of Understanding, signed in May 2014. Both institutions are members of Universitas 21, the leading global network of world-class research-intensive universities for the 21st century. A Global Challenges Research Fund project financed through EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This project has been preparatory. We aimed to bring together experts in the field of archaeology, museology, heritage management, history, and education, from the University of Glasgow and from our partner-institutions and other collaborators in India and Bangladesh. This report is the product of a workshop held in Kolkata, West Bengal, in April 2017, in which these academic experts met to discuss the range of issues relating to the promotion and preservation of historical cultural heritage in the cross-border region that is West Bengal and Bangladesh. The objective of the discussions was to provide the evidence-base for future calls under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The workshop also enabled the strengthening of existing relationships with the University of Glasgow’s partners in India, and the foundation of new relationships with others in West Bengal and Bangladesh, in order to establish a consortium to underpin a larger GCRF project proposal. -
2. Palaeolithic India and Human Dispersal
Palaeolithic lndia and Human Dispersal D.K.BHATTACHARYA 6BSTRECT Studies of Palaeolithic evidences from lndia are numerous but most of these are based on surface collection. So, for a majority of sites, technological analysis or demonstrating internal evolution is not possible. A brief survey has been done to show the three basic periods through which these studies progress. lt is also shown that lndian archaeology till date remains more or less Descrptive and one has to still wait for an Analytical phase to emerge. Human evolution within lndia cannot be traced through hard evidence because of an almgst total absence of fossils. Yet one cannot deny on the basis of the archaeological evidences that lndia not only acted as the corridor of human migration to south-east Asia, but also had intensive human occupation at a time much before any other place in the Old World. The Formative stage sees L,/ ttre exploration of virgin forests and hills leading to the discovery of stray antiquities from these regions. Since these discoveries were made immediately after Charles Darwin's theory of evolution became popular in the West, these antiquities were taken to be evidences of the presence of Prehistoric man in India and the extent of their expansion. -

All the Indian states is remarkably good in their cultural representation, thus West Bengal is one of them with reach cultural tourism product. Folk culture creates authenticity and distinctiveness in the global and regional tourism market. Tourism experiences which can connect people and visitors to local cultures are very important in this regard. All folk art and culture forms of West Bengal are ethnic in nature. They remain within a particular geographical region – Bhadu and Jhumur of Bankura, Jhumur and Nanchni of Purulia are the finest example. Folk culture tourism also encourages the continued recognition of culture as economic drivers by local, regional tour operators, local people and tourism marketing organizations. This paper examines how folk culture tourism allows producers and performers keep their trends alive ABSTRACT through increasing revenue. This paper also explore the folk and cultural tourism destinations in west Bengal which are managed by folk art hubs and performing artists for preserving and promoting their valuable cultural resources and how folk cultural hubs and villages can be created by taking special initiative and support by several Self Help Groups, banks, co operative societies, State Government.
