SUMMARY

CONTINENTAL DEVELOPMENT DEBRIEF The first half of the year in Oceania saw changes within Oceania’s structure and new staff appointments, this included a new General Manager and a High Performance & Development Manager (HPDM). Nonetheless there were a variety of development activities that took place, including coach and official’s education, mentorships as well as national training camps and the Oceania Hopes Week.

The highlight being the opportunity for Oceania’s best Hopes players and their coaches to learn from the vastly experienced and knowledgeable Eva Jeler during the Oceania Hopes Week.

On top of the courses that took place, various players and coaches represented the Oceania region at international level. With many of the Pacific countries using events as preparations for their priority focus the 4-yearly that is to take place in in July. Consequently, because of the mentioned reasons the National Associations in the Oceania region are only focused on planning and implementing development activities in the next quarters.

With the strategic plan in mind, more efforts need to be made to upskill coaches in the various countries, particularly those who have not had a coaching course in previous years. With two Olympic Solidarity funded coach courses already delivered for the year and with other countries applications confirmed and/or pending the goal in the second half of the year is to provide additional development opportunities through the support of Olympic Solidarity while pushing the delivery of courses through the development funding.

ITTF-Oceania want to Thank the ITTF for a fruitful Continental Forum that was held in in March. Fifteen National Association delegates attended in conjunction with the ITTF HP and Development Officers, as well as senior ITTF management and ITTF Oceania Management Committee. The forum allowed for fruitful face to face presentations and dialogue regarding High Performance and Development with regards to the specific needs of the various Pacific Island countries. This forum greatly assisted in the final formulation of the MOU between ITTF and ITTF Oceania.

ITTF-Oceania would like to thank ITTF, the National Olympic Committees, ONOC as well Olympic Solidarity for their on-going contribution to a sustainable development of the in Oceania.

An Olympic Solidarity funded ITTF-PTT Level 1 Coaching Course took place in , Solomon Islands from the 5-9th June.

The course was attended by twelve coaches which included national team players. This was the first coaching course in more than two years in the Solomon Islands. The president of Solomon Islands, Aldrin is excited for the future and says the new skill set that these coaches have gained will assist in delivering activities to school children. Having coaches who can assist teachers to teach Table Tennis will enable support of a previous initiative where the government funded equipment for 35 schools to get kids more active through sport.

The para component of the course was of benefit to Solomon Islands as they have been involved with the SDB program and have growing interest from people with disabilities who want to get involved with Table Tennis.

ITTF-Oceania, with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) recently developed a new table tennis school program – Bounce it Back. The 8-session participation program is tailored to meet the needs of mainstream schools within the Pacific and has two objectives: To increase levels of physical activity and promote social inclusion.

By engaging kids in fun games and activities, the program aims to generate more interest in table tennis and develop inclusive mindsets. “A key aspect of the Bounce it Back program is the promotion of social inclusion, something unique within a mainstream sports program in our region” says Rowan Fajerman - co-author of the BiB manual. “We wanted to continue our work in changing negative perceptions and attitudes towards persons with a disability (PWD) and complement the existing Smash Down Barriers Disability program.”

The program was piloted in Tonga across nine schools and one community group through the support of Tonga Table Tennis Federation (TTTF). The pilot commenced on Tuesday 26th of March starting with a one-day workshop for TTTF staff and local coaches. Delivery will continue throughout the year, with plans to launch the program in other countries in coming months.
