OTF Executive Officer‘s Report 2006 œ 2007

Overview

Junior player development has continued to be the major focus of OTF over the past two years. The ANZ Bank Tennis Development Program continues in 14 nations and the calendar of ITF W orld Junior Circuit events in the region provides opportunities for players to take their first steps on the international stage. Our ITF development officer Dan O‘Connell, assisted by an enthusiastic group of OTF development officers, has been instrumental in continuing the grassroots development of tennis. The various activities are covered in depth elsewhere in this report.

After two earlier attempts to move forward with resurfacing the courts at the regional tennis centre in Lautoka, the project finally got underway in May 2008. The RTC is the focal point of tennis development in the Pacific, hosting our biggest junior events as well as being home to the ITF Regional Training Centre. W ith funding from ITF, the Development Fund, support from California Products (US manufacturers of Plexipave) and a new sponsorship from Goodman Fielder, OTF committed all its reserves to ensure the new courts were ready for the international events from late June. Players and coaches have all been very positive about the new surface as have centre owners Fiji Council.

It has been a tough two years for Oceania nations in and Fed Cup with Oceania no longer represented in the top division of either competition. At the end of 2008 there are three women in the top 70 and two men in the top 100 of world rankings from nations in Oceania. Congratulations to (AUS) (52), (AUS) (53), Marina Erakovic (NZL) (66) and Australians (67) and (96). During 2008 Michael Leong (SOL) became the first player in OTF history from a Pacific Oceania nation to gain an ATP ranking reaching 1139 at the end of the year.

Executive

The executive committee met twice in Fiji during the period, in November 2007 and August 2008. In between times many of the committee have assisted with the various programs and administrative tasks throughout the region. In particular Joint Secretary General John Shannon has shouldered the responsibility of organising the events in Fiji, has been pivotal in the search for sponsorship and took an active role in overseeing the refurbishment of the RTC. After 10 years as Secretary General of OTF Fenton Coull stepped down in mid 2008 when he left to take up a new position. In his volunteer role for OTF Fenton provided leadership in managing the organisation and provided expert guidance on the development of tennis activities and programs in the Pacific. Thank you Fenton for 10 exceptional years with OTF. Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

Finance

The finances of OTF continue to be under severe pressure with a deficit in the costs of administering the programs and the record low value of the US dollar against local currencies, the Australian, New Zealand and Fiji dollars in particular, during 2008. As a result the cost of resurfacing the courts at RTC soared from 2006 estimates and OTF was forced to commit all its reserves to the project in 2008. As a result the year end position for 2008 will see OTF‘s finances at their lowest ebb since the organisation began.

Funding Support

In 2008 OTF welcomed a new sponsor, Goodman Fielder International, to join existing sponsors ANZ Bank and Air Pacific. Goodman Fielder‘s sponsorship was very timely as it allowed the RTC redevelopment to proceed and they will continue to support the centre and events across the Pacific for the next two years.

ANZ Bank continued its support for the mini tennis program in schools in the Pacific in 2007 and 2008. Grants continue to be given to nations to provide a coordinator for their ANZ mini tennis programs and ANZ Tennis Ambassador visits to nations to provide training and coaching. The support of ANZ Bank has led to over 30000 youngsters in schools being exposed to tennis on a yearly basis.

W ith the main focus of OTF being development in the Pacific, the extensive programs would not be able to operate without the support from ITF and Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC).

The matching grant program funded by these organisations supports Davis Cup and ITF Junior teams competitions, ITF junior events, OTF development officers and a host of other activities run by OTF. ONOC over the last two years has made a very significant contribution towards the fees for scholarship holders at the Regional Training Centre in Lautoka, removing the burden from parents and national associations. ITF through the Grand Slam Development Fund also provided a major grant towards the resurfacing of the regional tennis centre in Lautoka. OTF offers its sincere thanks to ITF and ONOC for their ongoing support.

International Tennis Federation

OTF continues to work very closely with ITF Director of Development Dave Miley and his team in London and with ITF Development Officer Pacific Oceania Dan O‘Connell on a variety of projects including the Regional Training Centre, ITF

Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

development tours and the ITF Pacific Oceania Junior Championships. These activities are outlined in detail elsewhere in the report.

Dave Miley visited Fiji at the end of January 2008 where he met with OTF officials and Dan O‘Connell to review programs and hear first hand about the challenges faced by OTF. The visit was instrumental in getting the tennis centre project underway.

Dan O‘Connell continues to provide the inspiration for the tennis development program in Pacific Oceania and his enthusiasm for the ANZ program has ensured the renewal of the sponsorship over the past two years.

Communications

OTF maintains a website and regular email communication to the member nations. There is also an annual ANZ Development newsletter and the bi-annual report. For the past two years the newsletter has been sent in electronic form greatly reducing costs. Dan O‘Connell has continued to provide an excellent ITF development newsletter in both hard copy and email forms.

M embership

Tahiti joined as an associate member nation in 2007 bringing the total number of members to 21. Sadly however Nauru became the first Oceania nation to default on fees to ITF and was suspended from ITF membership at the 2008 AGM. This will have consequences at OTF level as well.

Obituary

In late February 2008 Nicole Angat (PNG) died tragically in a motor vehicle accident in Suva. At the time Nicole was assistant coach at the ITF Regional Training Centre in Lautoka. Nicole was a cornerstone of the OTF/ITF development programme, mentoring the young players as well as doing development work in a number of nations as one of OTF's ANZ tennis ambassadors. On court she represented Pacific Oceania in Fed Cup in 2000 and 2001. She was captain of the PO Junior Fed Cup team in 2007 and had been appointed again for 2008 in Thailand. Nicole also still played to a high level winning the doubles silver medal at the South in Samoa in 2007 for Papua New Guinea with Abigail Tere-Apisah.

Senior Tennis

Pacific Oceania Davis Cup

The Pacific Oceania Davis Cup team draws its players from the 17 Oceania associate member nations of ITF and competed in Asia/Oceania Group 2 in 2007 and 2008. A great win over Pakistan in Samoa in 2007 gave the team a fourth straight year in the group but two away losses in 2008 will see Pacific Oceania back in Group 3 for 2009.

2007 œ New Zealand and Pakistan

New Zealand beat Pacific Oceania 5-0

The fast indoor surface and cool temperatures provided the New Zealand team with the ideal conditions to outplay Pacific Oceania. W est Nott was a surprise selection for the opening singles and started well against his much taller and more powerful opponent breaking serve to take an early lead. However he conceded his serve twice late in the set and then once in each of the next two sets to give New Zealand an early lead and they never looked back.

Michael Leong was unable to cope with the fast surface and serve-volley tactics of Simon Rea and was never in his singles match. Leong combined with Juan Langton in the doubles but the pair was overpowered and New Zealand had secured victory after two days. In the first reverse singles Langton played a good first set against and Brett Baudinet then completed the tie with an entertaining three set loss to Adam Thompson.

Pacific Oceania beat Pakistan 3-2

Local star Juan Langton was first on court against Pakistan number 1 . Spurred on by the home crowd Langton was going well after two hours when his foot stuck to the court and he turned his ankle early in the fourth set. Showing fortitude he saw the match through to keep Khan on the court but could not stop Pakistan taking the opening rubber. Michael Leong then levelled the scores with a convincing win over Pakistan number 2 Jalil Khan who was totally frustrated by Leong‘s style of play. Pacific Oceania put out a fresh pair, W est Nott and Brett Baudinet to face Aqeel Khan and Shazad Khan for the doubles. In a rubber lasting over four hours it would turn out to be a match of lost opportunities for Pacific Oceania. After winning the first set they squandered four set points in the second set, won the third and had five match points in the fourth. Eventually they went down in five sets to give Pakistan a 2-1 lead.

Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

In what was always going to be the most important rubber of the tie Michael Leong stepped out onto court on day three against Aqeel Khan who is a regular on the ITF Pro circuit. Mikey brought his best unorthodox game and superb athleticism to the match and outmanoeuvred his much more experienced opponent in many long rallies wearing him down and then winning the match in straight sets to level the tie. W ith Juan Langton unable to play W est Nott stepped up for the final rubber and played superb defensive tennis barely making an error in the three sets. In the end he conceded just one game in securing the tie for Pacific Oceania 3-2 and their place in Group 2 for a fourth straight year.

2008 œ Kuwait and Oman

Kuwait beat Pacific Oceania 4-1

The Pacific Oceania team made the long journey to Kuwait at the beginning of February where they encountered very cold temperatures for their tie with seeded nation Kuwait. The home team had too much class on the opening day winning both singles comfortably. New captain Cyrille Mainguy tried a different combination for the doubles but Cyril Jacobe and Michael Leong were well beaten despite playing good tennis. Michael Leong showed fight on the third day to win the first reverse singles against Kuwait‘s best player and then Juan Langton lost a close final match.

Asia/Oceania Group 2 Relegation Round in M uscat April 11 to 13 Oman beat Pacific Oceania 3-2

Pacific Oceania made a second trip to the Arabian peninsula, this time to Oman in the hope of avoiding relegation for a fourth year. In contrast to Kuwait the conditions were very hot and although play did not start until 3pm it was still around 35 degrees. Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

Michael Leong squandered chances in the opening rubber never quite getting into the match against the big hitting Omani who had been the number one player for his country in previous ties. Juan Langton then played some great tennis before going down in five sets for Pacific Oceania to trail 0-2 at the end of the first day.

The doubles was a thriller with Brett Baudinet and Cyril Jacobe recovering from a first set loss to win the next two sets and lead 6-5 and be serving for the match in the fourth set. From 30 all the pair lost serve and the tiebreak to be two sets all and then the fifth set slipped away 6-4 in a match lasting over four hours.

Michael Leong and Juan Langton made amends on the third day winning both reverse singles but the Pacific team was left to rue luck going against them on the first two days when losing both the five set matches.

South Pacific Games 2007 - Samoa

Apia Park in Samoa was the venue for the 2007 South Pacific Games tennis competition. Solomon Islander Michael Leong won his first Games gold medal when he took out the men's singles 61 61 over Samoa's Juan Langton. Although backed by a large home crowd Langton was no match for his Pacific Oceania Davis Cup teammate In the bronze medal playoff Julien Couly won over fellow New Caledonia player Nikolas N'Godrela 61 61 ensuring the medals were spread around. After the top seed Tagifano So'onalole (SAM) was eliminated early on New Caledonia dominated the women‘s singles with their number one player Elodie Dietrich-Rogge winning the final 61 63. The bronze playoff featured two young players vying for their first Games medal. After a tough first set Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG) came through 75 63 over Selima Taufa from Tonga In contrast to the quick and largely one-sided singles finals, the doubles produced all the thrills and close matches. W inning the first set was no guarantee of victory and in three medal matches pairs came from behind for victory. In the men's doubles final Gabriel Ledru and partner Nikolas N'Godrela eventually triumphing over Langton and Leon So'onalole 46 63 64. Star pairing from the teams event, Maylani Ah Hoy and Tagifano So'onalole withstood a first set onslaught from surprise finalists Abigail Tere-Apisah and Nicole Angat from PNG before winning in three sets to claim women's doubles gold. The mixed doubles saw Samoa claim their second gold of the day as Ah Hoy and Langton won yet another three setter over Godrela and Dilucco 75 36 63. Special thanks to Tennis Samoa for their outstanding work in hosting a great event. Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

In the final Zinnia Leamana (SOL) played some very good points but struggled to win games against Carruthers going down 6-0 6-1. Litia Godinet (ASA) played a great match to defeat Marcia Tere-Apisah (PNG) in the playoff for third in the girls 18/u singles. Marcia then combined with Zinnia Leamana to give the East Pacific pair of Steffi Carruthers and Leilani Duchnak a real fright in the doubles final before the East pair recovered to win the third set. Players from the French Territories dominated the 13/u events. Karl Yomes (TAH) beat Clement Coarraze (CAL) 62 64 in the boys singles final. Robin Morove (PNG) beat Rafael Jones (NMI) for third place. In the girls Samuelle Bull (CAL) won a long three set battle against hometown player Annie Shannon and Thea Minor (NMI) outlasted Fiji's Tarani Kamoe for third.

Asia/Oceania Closed Junior Championships - 2007

After two years in the Asia/Oceania Junior Championships moved to India and as a consequence of the extra distance the number of players participating from Oceania decreased. No titles were won for the first time. (NZL) and Matt Reid (AUS) reached the singles semi-finals and Bernard Tomic (AUS) with a Japanese partner was a finalist in the boys doubles.

Only Jade Hopper (AUS) made a significant showing among the girls reaching the singles quarters and doubles semis.

Asia/Oceania Closed Junior Championships - 2008

The venue moved again, this time to a regional city in Indonesia. James Duckworth (AUS) was the best performed player from the Oceania region making the singles semi-finals and combining with compatriot Jarryd Chaplin to reach the doubles semis. New Zealand‘s McLachlan brothers, Riki and Ben, also made the doubles semis.

Jade Hopper (AUS) repeated her singles performance of 2007 in reaching the quarter- finals and Katherine W estbury (NZL) made the doubles semis with her Japanese partner.

Oceania Nations at ITF Junior Teams Events

Australia rocked the junior tennis world in August and September 2007 when they first won the W orld Junior Teams 14/u boys title in Czech Republic and then followed Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

it up by winning the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup 16/u team titles in Italy. Staring for Australia in the events in Italy were Oceania Junior Champions Isabella Holland and Bernard Tomic. Sally Peers, runner-up in Lautoka played a vital role for the Junior Fed Cup team in the final winning both her singles and then taking the deciding doubles with Holland. Pacific Oceania played in the Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania qualifying competition in Kuala Lumpur for the first time. Although only winning one tie the girls learned a lot in what was a development year for them. Pacific Oceania played in the Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania qualifying competition in Bangkok in 2008. W ith two of the team returning from 2007 the girls had some close ties finishing 11th out of 16 nations. No Oceania teams qualified for the world finals in the JFC but Australia qualified in Junior Davis Cup and both the boys and girls events of W orld Junior Tennis 14/u competition. At the W orld Junior Tennis finals in Austria the Australian boys finished 5th and the girls 13th. At the Junior Davis Cup finals in Mexico the Australian boys were a creditable 6th.

Junior Development

ANZ Bank Pacific Tennis Development Program Mini tennis in schools continues to be the primary focus of the ANZ program. 14 nations have been involved this year and the enthusiasm for tennis continues to grow as a result. Dan O‘Connell and the OTF development officers acting as (ANZ Tennis ambassadors“ have done great work spreading the word throughout the region. Over the past two years particular attention has been given to working with the ANZ marketing managers to leverage the program fully for both ANZ and tennis.

OTF would like to thank the mini tennis co-ordinators appointed by each national association, the teachers and coaches who deliver the program and the ANZ Bank managers in each nation for their support and encouragement.

The program has also benefited from the two yearly grants of equipment from the ITF to developing nations.

ITF Regional Training Centre Ross Murray completed his two year stint as Head Coach at the ITF Regional Training Centre in Lautoka, Fiji, in 2007 and was replaced for 2008 by Australian Talor W ain.

Despite the atrocious weather for the first few months of 2008 and the courts being out of action for resurfacing for some time Talor has made a very positive impression Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

on the players and program this year. Now that the new courts are in use the players are looking forward to working hard on their tennis. Talor has travelled to New Caledonia and New Zealand with teams from the Pacific and will be in Australia and New Zealand with players in early 2009.

A highlight for the training centre was the visit at the start of the year by ITF Director of Development Dave Miley who hit with the players (before a tropical cyclone took hold) and met with staff to plan the program for the year.

The Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) has continued to support the program at the centre by providing scholarships for all the academy players. This very significant funding has ensured the continuity of the centre over the past few years.

RTC director Dan O‘Connell has continued his spectacular success rate in finding US college scholarships for the players as they graduate from the RTC. Four more players have gone to college, two in 2007 and two in August 2008.

OTF Development Officers

Long serving OTF Development Officer Lency Tenai resigned in May 2007 to take a coaching position in Guam. Lency is an icon in the Pacific both as a player and as a coach. As the only indigenous development officer for any in Oceania he has been an inspiration to young players on his visits to Pacific nations over a number of years. The decision was taken not to replace Lency with a single appointment but to utilise the skills of a number of coaches in the region as development officers to travel to other nations. In the second half of 2007 this work was carried out by Finau Fa, Lave Toli and Nicole Angat and in 2008 by Finau and David Detudamo.

The programs of the development officers were organised and overseen by ITF Development Officer Pacific Oceania, Dan O‘Connell.

Coach Education

In 2007 an ITF Level 1 course was held in Lautoka, presented by Karl Davies, ITF Development Officer in Africa. Nine coaches from Fiji and around the Pacific attended the week long course.

Gerard W inter (NCal) ran a course for ANZ mini tennis coaches at the Northern Club in Lautoka after the 2008 POJC (see right). He inspired the coaches providing new ideas on how to improve youngsters‘ skills and play on smaller courts. In line with the ITF‘s new —Play and Stay“ campaign.

Oceania Tennis Federation Bi-Annual Report 2007-08

During 2008 ONOC, through the coaches NOC‘s , provided grants for Johnson Taliki (SOL) and David Detudamo (NRU) to come to the Regional Training Centre in Lautoka to improve their coaching skills under RTC head coach Talor W ain and to assist with coaching the scholarship players.

ITF Pacific Oceania Teams

In 2007 and 2008 the ITF funded development teams comprising young players from the nations in Pacific Oceania to play junior tournaments in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. These tours provide much needed competition for the players after all the training at home in the Pacific. A highlight of the Australian tour is a visit to the each year. The picture shows the 2008 team outside Rod Lver Arena with OTF JSG Fenton Coull.

Additionally a team played the summer ITF junior circuit in New Zealand in 2008 with Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG) and Steffi Carruthers (SAM) gaining significant ITF world junior ranking points.
