Francesco Giacomo Tricomi1 Nato a Napoli il 5 maggio 1897 in un’agiata famiglia borghese, Tricomi frequenta l’Istituto tecnico locale, dove concepisce una passione per gli studi scientifici grazie all’influenza del suo insegnante di Matematica Alfredo Perna. Conseguito il diploma all’età di appena sedici anni, s’iscrive al corso di laurea in Chimica dell’Università di Bologna. L’anno successivo passa a Fisica e infine, nel 1915-16, torna a Napoli e si immatricola al terz’anno del corso di studi in Matematica. Arruolato nell’autunno del 1916, segue un corso per allievi ufficiali di complemento presso l’Accademia militare di Torino e il 1 aprile 1917, fresco di nomina, è inviato al fronte, dapprima sul Carso e poi nella zona del monte Grappa e del Piave. Nonostante la guerra, riesce comunque a portare avanti gli studi scientifici e consegue la laurea in Matematica a Napoli il 16 aprile 1918, durante una licenza. Terminata la Grande Guerra, Tricomi torna a Napoli all’inizio del 1920, decorato di due croci al merito, e riallaccia i rapporti con alcuni suoi ex docenti, fra cui R. Marcolongo e G. Torelli che lo indirizzano nelle prime ricerche e lo mettono in contatto con G. Fubini. Nel febbraio del 1921, su suggerimento di U. Amaldi, è assunto da F. Severi quale assistente alla cattedra di Geometria analitica presso l’Università di Padova. L’esperienza alla ‘Scuola’ di Severi è tuttavia di breve durata, poiché nei primi mesi del 1922 Tricomi è chiamato a Roma dove consegue la libera docenza in Analisi algebrica e infinitesimale e dove ha modo di inserirsi in un ambiente accademico di eccezionale levatura, che vanta in quegli anni la presenza di illustri matematici, fra cui V. -

His two sons, expelled in Italy at the beginning of their academic career, also found their way to the USA and stayed there. Formative years in Paris He was born in Venice on 19 January 1879 to Lazzaro Fubini, a mathematics teacher at the machinist school, and to Zoraide Torre. At only nine years old, he was enrolled at Foscarini High School in Venice, achieving, in his eight years of ginnasio and liceo [junior high school and high school], perfect grades (all 10s) in mathematics2. In 1896, at seventeen years old, he enrolled in the Facoltà di Matematica [School of Mathematics] at the Scuola normale superiore of Pisa, «where many scholars became passionate about research in geometry»3. International Workshop Bologna 26-28 ottobre 2006 Some links between Bruno De Finetti and the University of Bologna Fulvia de Finetti – Rome ……… Ladies and Gentleman, let me start thanking the organizing committee and especially Maria Carla Galavotti for the opportunity she has given me to open this International Workshop and talk about my father in front of such a qualified audience. This privilege does not derive from any special merit of my own but from the simple and may I say “casual” fact that my father was Bruno de Finetti. By the way, this reminds me one of the many questions that the little Bruno raised to his mother: “What if you married another daddy and daddy married another mammy? Would I be your son, or daddy’s?” As far as the question concerns myself, my replay is that “I” would not be here to-day! As I did in my speech in Trieste on July 20 2005, for the 20th anniversary of his death, I will try to show the links, between Bruno and Bologna in this case, Trieste last year. Sure, a big difference is the fact that he never lived in Bologna where he spent only few days of his life compared to the twenty and more years he spent in Trieste, yet it was in Bologna in 1928 that he moved the first step in the international academic world. I refer to his participation in the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Bologna in September (3-10) of that year. It was again in Bologna in that same University that he returned fifty-five years later to receive one of the very last tributes to his academic career. -

ARCHIVIO GAETANO FICHERA INVENTARIO DELLA CORRISPONDENZA a cura di Claudio Sorrentino con il coordinamento scientifico di Paola Cagiano de Azevedo Roma 2020 1 NOTA INTRODUTTIVA Gaetano Fichera nacque ad Acireale, in provincia di Catania, l’8 febbraio 1922. Fu assai verosimilmente suo padre Giovanni, anch’egli insegnante di matematica, a infondergli la passione per questa disciplina. Dopo aver frequentato il primo biennio di matematica nell’Università di Catania (1937-1939), si laureò brillantemente a Roma nel 1941, a soli diciannove anni, sotto la guida di Mauro Picone (di cui fu allievo prediletto), eminente matematico e fondatore dell’Istituto nazionale per le applicazioni del calcolo, il quale nello stesso anno lo fece nominare assistente incaricato presso la sua cattedra. Libero docente dal 1948, la sua attività didattica fu svolta sempre a Roma, ad eccezione del periodo che va dal 1949 al 1956, durante il quale, dopo essere divenuto professore di ruolo, insegnò nell’Università di Trieste. Nel 1956 fu chiamato all’Università di Roma, dove successe proprio al suo Maestro Mauro Picone, nella quale occupò le cattedre di analisi matematica e analisi superiore. Alla sua attività ufficiale vanno aggiunti i periodi, a volte anche piuttosto lunghi, di insegnamento svolto in Università o istituzioni estere. Questi incarichi all’estero, tuttavia, non interferirono con la sua attività didattica in Italia. Fu membro dell’Accademia nazionale dei Lincei, di cui fu socio corrispondente dal 1963 e nazionale dal 1978, e di altre prestigiose istituzioni culturali nazionali e internazionali. Nel 1976 fu insignito dall’Accademia dei Lincei stessa del “Premio Feltrinelli”. Ai Lincei si era sempre dedicato, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, quando dal 1990 al 1996 diresse i «Rendiconti di matematica e applicazioni», ai quali diede forte impulso, migliorandone la qualità scientifica e incrementandone la diffusione a livello internazionale. -

Giacardi THE ITALIAN SCHOOL OF ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY AND THE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS: MOTIVATIONS, ASSUMPTIONS AND STRATEGIES Abstract. In this paper I intend to illustrate the reasons which led some members of the Ital- ian School of algebraic geometry – in particular, Corrado Segre (1863-1924), Guido Castel- nuovo (1865-1952), Federigo Enriques (1871-1946) and Francesco Severi (1879-1961) – to become so concerned with problems pertaining to mathematics teaching; describe the epis- temological vision which inspired them; discuss the various ways in which this commitment manifested itself (school legislation, teacher training, textbooks, publishing initiatives, uni- versity lectures, etc.); make evident the influence of the reform movements abroad, particu- larly that of Klein; finally, show how, in this respect as well, Italian geometers projected an unquestionable image of a “School”. 1. There are different schools of thought on the orthography when the sur- name is not preceded by the given name: in this case we write the first letter in upper-case, as Benedetto Croce (1866–1952) used to do, e.g., see Croce (1981). MEDICINA NEI SECOLI ARTE E SCIENZA, 30/1 (2018) 211-240 Journal of History of Medicine Articoli/Articles TO SIGN OR NOT TO SIGN: TULLIO LEVI-CIVITA, GIUSEPPE LEVI AND THE FASCIST LOYALTY OATH OF 19311 JUDITH GOODSTEIN California Institute of Technology, Caltech Archives, Pasedena (CA), USA SUMMARY This paper considers the historical framework for the events leading up to the 1931 oath of allegiance to the Fascist government, which all of Italy’s university professors were required to sign, and how Turin’s professor of anatomy Giuseppe Levi and the Roman mathematician Tullio Levi-Civita responded. Introduction As Jews, Professors Levi and Levi-Civita shared centuries of tradi- tion; as scientists and Italian citizens, they enjoyed an international reputation. Levi, unlike Levi-Civita, was a fiery anti-fascist from 1926; Levi-Civita, a Socialist since the early 1900s, opposed Italy’s entry into World War I and co-sponsored with Theodore von Kármán, Hungarian-born engineer and applied scientist, one of the first po- stwar European scientific conferences, in Innsbruck, Austria-a mee- ting that was boycotted by French and British scientists, who had ban- ned Germany and her World War I allies from attending international meetings. Born in Trieste, one of the principal cities in the Austrian- Hungarian Empire, Levi was a confirmed Irredentist, and sided with the interventionist camp.
