Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ( hVcES £^S F 7 D /ai\o^778x 2 Abstract This thesis is an ethnographic account of contemporary religious practice among a Bantu agricultural people in Southern Tanzania, the majority of whom are affiliated to the Roman Catholic Church. It examines the dialectic between Christianity and what the Pogoro consider to be ‘traditional’ practice as resulting in a locally defined Catholicism and in the separation of formal, official Christianity from ‘traditional practice’. The thesis looks at how the existence of an institutional religion, in this case Catholicism, defines some aspects of local practice as traditional in opposition to it, while, at the same time, elements of Christian practice have been adopted by the community in a non institutional way. The thesis describes Pogoro Christianity, the role of the Church and Pogoro perceptions of it and gives an account of that which they consider to belong to the realm of ‘tradition’. Traditional practice is not in actuality unchanging, but any changes in traditional practice must be legitimated by the authority of the dead and the spirits. The first part of the thesis provides the historical and geographical background. This is followed by a chapter on the Catholic Church in the area and official Catholic practice. Local Catholic practice and perceptions of the church and Christianity are described and accounted for. The next section looks at what is constituted as belonging to the realm of ‘tradition’. The core chapters in this section describe girls puberty rites, funerals and the relationship with the dead. It is here that Catholic practice enters the realm of ‘tradition’. A chapter examines the place of witchcraft eradication movements among the Pogoro, and in East and central Africa, to demonstrate how ‘tradition’ can and does change, and to provide a contrast with the position of Christianity among the Pogoro. One of more than seven thousand African Initiated Churches in existence today, it combines conservative Catholicism, traditional religion and charismatic manifestations of the Spirit. Yet this group is different in one important respect—it worships a black messiah, claiming that its founder, Simeo Ondeto, was Jesus Christ reincarnated in African skin. This article considers factors involved in the group’s genesis as a distinct modern-day messianic movement, including: (1) the need to defend and define itself vis-à-vis Roman Catholicism; (2) the appropriation of apocalyptic ideas found in Christian scriptures and their synthesis with local religious traditions; and (3) the imitation of Jesus’ example and teaching to confront political and religious persecution in a manner marked by openness, universalism and non- violence.

    Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

He was with his mother named Maria recognized as (mama) her official “title”. Ephesus is a village situated along River Nzoia in Luoland, founded in 1960.

ABSTRACT European colonization of Africa was largely followed by a process of religious acculturation as older African religious and social traditions were threatened and partially replaced by new ones. Each new religious movement has its own peculiar causes or a combination of causes. The significance of these churches is important to note due to increasing numbers and growth usually at the expense of the historic and mission churches. Many of these AICs were founded by charismatic leaders who attracted followers through their preaching and healing, attributed to the power of the Holy Spirit. This article arises from fieldwork that adopted a descriptive research design within Hamisi District in western Kenya. Data was collected using questionnaires, oral interviews and participatory observation. This in-depth study details the historical background of the African Divine Church, its origins, mandate and development in present day Kenya. INTRODUCTION African independent church (AIC) movement is a phenomenon that has origins onthe African continent and is closely associated with colonialism. The factors that contributed to the rise of these movements include social, political and economic among others.

The political unity and cohesion that we pride ourselves in did not come by accident. The primary source of today’s unity and cohesion is a product of political culture which is a product of deliberate actions and visions of national founders. Since independence national founders recognized the potential dangers of religious discord. Therefore from the beginning there was a strong emphasize of equal access to education among Christians and Muslims and equal opportunities in matters of employment and participation in national affairs for both Muslim and Christian. These views went long towards promoting and projecting the larger cause of national unity, cohesion and social harmony for more than fifty years. Contrarily to nation expectations today elements of dissatisfaction, blames, and attacks are recurring among Christiana and Muslims implying that we went wrong somewhere. This paper is therefore an attempt to show where did we went wrong and recommend accordingly. In this paper terms “Christian” and “Muslim” are used in a name sense and not the way people practice their belief.
