Summit the of

Overview Maine is home to 14, 4,000 ft peaks, Saddleback Mountain is lucky enough to be nestled right in the heart of the county containing 10 of these peaks. Come meet up with other like-minded hikers who wish to complete these 10 peaks in our 7 hike series. Let the Saddleback Adventure guides do all the trip planning and organizing to get you to the top of one or more of these high peaks to enjoy the sense of accomplishment and beauty found in the mountains. These hikes are very challenging and arduous; hikers will need to be competent with good physical stamina.

1. Mountain and - Parking on Caribou Pond Rd. Access the AT southbound for an out and back up the backside of Sugarloaf over to Spaulding and back down. Distance: 4.9 Miles each way for a Total of 9.8 Miles. July 11th Time to Meet: 8am Meeting Locations: Parking lot on Caribou Pond rd. 4.4 miles from the turn off of Rt. 27 in Stratton Maine. Parking will be on the left just before a closed locked Gate.

2. Mt. Abraham - Parking at Fire Wardens parking lot for Mt. Abraham it’s a single trail to the summit and reverse back to the cars. Distance: 3.9 Miles each way for a Total of 7.8 Miles. July 18th Start Time: 8am Meeting Location: The Meeting area will be the Fire Warden’s trailhead parking area on Rapid Stream rd. Take West Kingfield Road in Kingfield, which becomes a dirt road. West Kingfield Road ends after 3.5 miles; continue straight onto Rapid Stream Road (also a dirt road), and follow it another 2.5 miles until you reach the first major fork in the road. Take the left fork and park at the grassy pullout before Rapid Stream. High clearance vehicles can continue on past this first parking area and across two bridges over Rapid Stream. After the second crossing, there is a fork, follow the right fork for approximately 1 mile until the trailhead, where parking is also available.

3. The Horn - Parking at the Berry Picker Trail Head, hike the Berry picker trail until it merges with the AT and hike North Bound on the AT to the summit of the Horn. Reverse this hike back to the cars. Distance: 4.1 Miles each way for a Total of 8.2 Miles. July 25th Meeting Time: 8am Meeting Location: To reach the trailhead, turn off ME-4 in the center of Madrid village and cross the Sandy River over the one-lane bridge onto the paved Reeds Mill Road. At 3.0 miles, immediately after crossing a bridge over Conant Stream in front of a white house (on the right), turn left onto a good gravel road. Follow this private road which was a very good gravel road but has deteriorated some, for 3.1 miles. Do not take a right on an older, but still high-quality gravel road at this point. This gravel “cross road” has two connections, creating a pie-shaped island in the middle, and is signed for snowmobile use. Follow the road, which bears left at this point and, shortly after crossing a stream (watch out for holes in the bridge), you will arrive at an ATV gate where you can park.

4. West Peak and Avery Peak - Access both West Peak and Avery via the Fire Wardens Trail and parking on Stratton Pond Rd. Distance: 4.8 Miles each way for a Total of 9.6 Miles. August 1st Meeting Time: 8am Meeting Area: To reach the Fire Warden’s parking area turn on Stratton Brook Pond Rd. in Stratton Maine and continue until you arrive at a parking area with a large information kiosk. Stratton Brook Pond rd. crosses the where there is some parking do not be fooled the parking area is further down the road. Do not take any turns off of Stratton Brook Pond Rd.

5. South Crocker and Reddington Mountain - Access the AT North bound on Caribou pond Rd. and hike to the summit of South , then continuing on down a flagged trail to the summit of Redington Mountain before following a series of flagged trees and logging roads back to caribou pond rd and the parking area. Loop Trail Distance: 9 Miles total. August 8th Time to Meet: 8am Meeting Location: Parking lot on Caribou Pond rd. 4.4 miles from the turn off of Rt. 27 in Stratton Maine. Parking will be on the left just before a closed locked Gate.

6. North Crocker - Parking for North Crocker Mountain is on Rt. 27 at the AT crossing and guests will head South Bound with their guide to the summit of North Crocker Mountain, a tree covered 4,000 ft peak with a few small views. Distance: 5.2 Miles each way for a total of 10.4 Miles. August 15th Time to Meet: 8am Meeting Location: Parking lot on Caribou Pond rd. 4.4 miles from the turn off of Rt. 27 in Stratton Maine. Parking will be on the left just before a closed locked Gate.

7. Saddleback Mountain - Ascend Saddleback by way of the Berry Picker Trail head to merge with the Appalachian Trail at the summit. Take in the northwesterly views of the Rangeley lakes region. Descend on the trails to finish your hike at the Saddleback base lodge. Distance: 3.6 Miles each way for a Total of 7.2 Miles. August 22nd Meeting Time: 7am Meeting Location: Meet at the Saddleback Base Lodge on Saddleback Mountain Rd. Park on the left side if possible just before the base lodge and meet on the front deck of the Base lodge.
