Principal, Temple Christian College the assembly area at our Parent/Teacher Interviews. We were greatly inspired by our poets and intend to hold the competition annually. We would like to congratulate all the entrants on contributing to our celebration of Easter, a very important season in the Christian Year 8’s Visit to Baptist Care calendar. It was wonderful to see that Christ’s life, death and resurrection still has a central place in the lives of our students. All of our Year 8s have recently had the opportunity to visit Baptist Care’s inner city site (WestCare Centre), to participate in service Julie Wright, English learning as a practical extension of our Christian Living program.

Baptist Care are involved in supporting and serving those in need with food and relief, accommodation and health and well-being programs. Their facility is within walking distance of the school, just off Whitmore Square in the City.

Baptist Care also have the opportunity to work with the Aboriginal community in a number of their services. They provide mentoring and engagement programs for Indigenous youth, support for those battling homelessness, and specific help for Aboriginal Elders.

Our three Year 8 classes each spent a day engaged in a program designed to deepen their Aboriginal cultural awareness. They learnt about different aspects of Indigenous history and culture, as well as participating in an Aboriginal art experience. Each of the groups produced some magnificently decorated boomerangs!

Some of our students also generously donated food items for the emergency relief kitchen. It is wonderful to see our students growing in their knowledge of God’s mission in the world, and how this finds expression in our local community. A variety of ensembles were on display On Monday of Week 11, our new KIVA team sold 6 flavours of fried rice to over 50 at Open Evening, from the String Ensemble, who kept appreciative customers. The $210 we raised is being put towards the KIVA project listeners entertained with their rendition of the theme from which has been running in the school since 2010. The team will be able to fund another 8 loans to loan partners across the world. The KIVA team will be running a Ghostbusters, to the school’s largest ensemble, Concert similar fundraiser in the last week of each term. The plan for Term 2 is five flavours Band, who took the audience on an adventure with Mission of noodles. Impossible. Temple’s other large ensemble, Stage Band, took to the stage with great presence as they performed the ballad Angel Eyes, led by Jake Meinel on Tenor Sax, and two swing numbers which showed the fullness of the horn section off nicely. Numerous class bands from years 9 -12 also graced the stage, sharing pieces such as Rockin’ Robin, Dancing in the Street and Proud Mary. The Year 12 Ensemble had toes tapping as Jonah Dixon crooned his way through a funk/shuffle of Billy Joel’s Just the Way You Are, with a sweet sax solo from Tristan Martin. The gospel number Down by the Riverside was sung, in beautiful three -part harmony, by our one and only Jazz Vocal Ensemble. The Praise and Worship team, accompanied by One Body dancers, wrapped up the night with Build My Life, and Open Evening was over for another year. A big thank you Year 9 and 10 Drama to all the staff who contributed to making the evening a – The Tragical Life of a Cheeseboy great night, and to families who visited and formed part of the audience (both familiar and new faces. Thank you for Students who study Drama in encouraging the Music Department. Years 9 and 10 travelled to Cabra College to see Slingsby Theatre’s The Tragical Life of a Cheeseboy, a heartrending tale of loss, longing and coming of age. Our students were instantly swept into the magic of the narrative inside a travelling theatre tent filled with a collection of trunks and suitcases with concealed compartments, which revealed other worlds, maps, globes and mirrors – all of which assisted in the narration of a story sprinkled with warmth and humour. The delightfully playful story reminded us of the wonders of the universe, of infinite possibility and ultimately, the transforming power of love.

The crowd, consisting of students, family and shoppers, were able to hear the core Easter message sung through beautiful acoustic renditions of Man of Sorrows and O Praise the Name. It was a great performance opportunity for Stage Band and Jazz Vocal Ensemble to rehearse for the Generations in Jazz festival coming up soon. In conjunction with Event Partner the Motor Accident Commission, RAA introduced the program to South Australian students for the first time in 2009. It returned again in 2011 and has been held yearly ever since.

RAA’s goals for Street Smart High are:

 To reduce the state’s youth road toll

 To demonstrate the reality of road trauma to high school students. Let’s work together to consider the health of God’s creation in our daily habits.  To educate soon to be learner, learner and novice drivers about driving risks.

 To encourage young people to avoid situations that place themselves and others in danger.

Road crashes are one of the leading causes of death for young people under the age of 25. Street Smart High aims to reduce the South Australian road toll by educating our young people about the importance of road safety. As the state’s largest road safety education event, Street Smart High demonstrates the reality of road trauma and has a lasting impact on students.

The program contains a mock accident scenario, as well as a number of confronting situations and real life stories of tragedy. The students gain valuable insight into the importance of risk minimisation and the fact that whilst we can choose the risk, we cannot always choose the consequence. The students conducted themselves impeccably and I am certain that they found the day informative and compelling. Thank you to Mr Marzahn, Mrs Lock, Mr Mackay and Mrs Van Wezel for accompanying the students.
