Editorial

After the challenging winter conditions, spring is almost upon us as we anxiously await the warmer weather. All athletes will welcome the change which brings bright days filled with sunshine and blooming trees and flowers.

I am convinced that all WPA members enjoyed the past Olympic Games and are motivated to kick start their training. Although the Olympic medal tables for athletics show only one medal for Caster Semenya, we had fairly good performances with athletes reaching the semifinal and final rounds in in their respective events.

This is unfortunately the current South African trend in competitions, that some of our athletes are just not at the level of excellence.

Track & Field is currently in its off season and we trust that the athletes will be inspired witnessing the performances of Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis and so many others.

Cross Country completed all the leagues and the WP Championships in wet weather. The inter- provincial competition between Boland, SWD and WPA was hosted in Paarl on 25 August which presented some good performances from some of our athletes. We wish the team, which will represent the Province, the best of luck at the National Championships in Durban.

WPA was the host of the SA Half Championships on 26 August and what a spectacular event it proved to be. With running a superb 60:57, to set the fastest time on a standard half marathon distance in . The WPA ladies managed to obtain the silver team medal. Unfortunately the senior men’s performance was disappointing.

The master’s athletes, (Silver), Graham Katzen (Bronze), Ursula Frans (Bronze), Clive Owen (Gold) and Awie Veldsman (Bronze) performed well and held WPA’s name high.

The event of the year, the Marathon and Cape Town 10 km are taking place on Sunday 23 September. I would like to challenge all the clubs to participate in numbers, please note that these are league events. The Cape Town Fun Run and Cape Town Relays 5 x 4.2km will take place on Saturday 22 September at the Fields.

We had excellent representation at the Council Meeting on 28 August. I am sure that all clubs were well informed as to the way forward for the province and may you continue to drive your clubs with enthusiasm and passion. This good participation reflects that we all want to raise the standard in WPA to the next level.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross country Runners, with only the National Championships remaining on the 2012 calendar, I would like to start this month’s article by extending a word of thanks to all who participated in this year’s activities and congratulations to all who achieved their goals this season. I would like to start with the following quote by John Bingham as a word of encouragement to our athletes and especially to those who are considering cross country for next year.

"Believe that you can run farther or faster. Believe that you're young enough, old enough, strong enough, and so on to accomplish everything you want to do. Don't let worn-out beliefs stop you from moving beyond yourself."

The Western Province Cross Country Championships was held at CPUT on 11 August 2012 and was well attended considering the inclement weather. This event was held in conjunction with the schools Cross Country Championships and produced a good mix of performances with athletes trying to make a “last ditch” impression on the selectors for inclusion into the provincial teams.

The interprovincial cross country was held at Drakenstein Correction Facility located just outside Paarl, once again in rainy and windy conditions. The event was hosted by Boland Athletics which was well organised and produced much excitement for the considerable number of spectators present. The first event was the senior men’s 12Km with Hein Campher wining in convincing fashion. It appeared as if this would set the scene for our dominance at this meet, however this was not to be as the rest of the senior and master categories produced mixed results. The junior WP athletes were much more in control in the junior events. The WP team to travel to Durban was refined and finalised at this event.

Interesting news from the USA cross country trials:

It has been a long time since runners from the have performed well at national level and we are constantly looking at ways to address this. I compared our activities leading up to our championship with the USA cross country trials and came up with some interesting information and comparisons between ourselves and the athletes in the USA.

1. We have a smaller pool of athletes but we are probably on par with the quality of the USA athletes. Corporate involvement is commonplace to assist with funding of programmes etc. 2. Our courses are comparable with those used in the USA, but we need to focus on accuracy of measurement (standardized courses), keep records of times on these courses etc. and base qualification on time related performances. 3. Our training regimens are different with many athletes using the cross country season to maintain fitness during the winter months, with very few cross country specialists. 4. Our championships preparation is significantly different with fewer athletes “shining” at championships 5. Resources are different, with athletes having better diets, healthcare, education and employment opportunities etc. 6. The retention of athletes within their home areas (provinces) is emphasized. We should be looking at a sustainable incentive programme to keep our top athletes in the province and prevent them from being lured elsewhere. The American scholarship programme goes a long way in attracting athletes to educational institutions. Many times our athletes have already dropped out of school before they have reached the senior level. We have to keep our top athletes at school to be able to access tertiary education and partnerships with these institutions must be foster and opportunities created to address this gap.

Visiting the USA cross country website I discovered that selection for the USA national cross country team is done at the national trials. The various cross country states select teams and individuals to participate in this event with specific qualifying criteria. Teams compete in one of nine regional championships to qualify. In addition to the 31 teams, 38 individual runners qualify for the national championship. These trials will be held on 2 February 2013 in Forest Park, St. Louis. The course is outlined on the map below and the expected temperature is predicted to be between -30C and 60C.

Athletes orientate themselves with the course on the previous day as access to the venue is secured for warm ups etc. However what I found interesting was that the course was constructed 3 months before the event, and every Saturday beginning on 5 January, the organizers will be hosting FREE cross country workouts on the official Championship course. Each Saturday will feature a different workout and experienced coaches will be on hand to lead athletes through "practice." These workouts will be perfect for anyone running any of the events at the meet and the training programme for January 2013 is highlighted in the table below:

Date /Time / Activity Explanation Saturday January 5th: Fartlek is a Swedish term for speed play. Fartleks are a 9:00am- Warm-Up, Strides, etc. staple in just about every high school and college cross country program. We'll show you guys the course and 9:15am- Workout = Fartlek! 6.5km of 2 blow the whistle when you're supposed to be "on" and minutes "on" 1 minute "off" on the then again when you're supposed to be "off." The "on" course segments should be hard (race pace effort) and the "off" segments should be done at an easy recovery pace Saturday January 12th: The Tempo Run is a classic! These should be done at 9:00am- Warm-Up, Strides, etc. slower than race pace but still at a very hard effort. We'll 9:15am- Workout = Tempo Run. 3-5 have pace charts on hand to determine your goal pace miles total for this workout based on your 5k times Saturday January 19th: This is a tough one but a fun one! Everybody remembers doing "quarters" if they ran high school cross country or 9:00am- Warm-Up, Strides, etc. track. We'll have the 200 meter points marked and you'll 9:15am- Workout = 12-16 x 400 with 1 be doing these on the actual race course. We'll try to minute rest between repeats start at slower than race pace and then work our way down to faster than race pace by the end. Saturday January 26th Oh boy...the dreaded mile repeats! These are tough but 9:00am- Warm-Up, Strides, etc. they'll get you ready for the race. We'll run these at goal 9:15am- Workout = 5km x 1 km with 3 race pace on the course. This is the most race specific of minutes rest in between repeats. all the workouts we'll do over these five weeks. If you can hit this one you'll be ready to go on February 2nd

Cross country runners, as you can see we have way to go, but the problems are NOT insurmountable. The first step is a change in attitude, we need to believe that we can achieve, that we can be best, after-all we are South Africans.

RACE WALKING

The cream of South Africa’s current race walking talent was on display earlier this year at the Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships in Port Elizabeth. The Men’s 20km race was one of the fastest walking races ever on SA soil. Six walkers achieved under 90 minutes with Armond Nel (ASWD) filling fifth position in a personal best time of 1hr27:41. This stunning performance secured him a place on the SA team of six men (including Olympian Marc Mundell) who represented the Green and Gold in Saransk, Russia on the 12th and 13th May 2012 at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup where Armond finished in 96th position, competing at the highest possible level of race-walking talent.

With Armond regularly appearing on the podium at local League Walks in his Nedbank AC colours, we thought we’d take the opportunity to get to know a little more about him:

1. Where and what are you studying? I am a 2nd year student studying nature conservation at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University George Campus Saasveld.

2. Where and with whom do you live? I stay in Huis Chris Heunis koshuis in George. Otherwise I live with my parents in Kuilsriver.

3. How long have you been race walking? I started training race walking in 2003, making this my 10th year in the sport.

4. How did you start? Chris Carstens saw me at the Safari 10km race in Wellington in 2003 and asked me if I would be interested to train with his group at .

5. What has been your greatest race walking achievement so far? My greatest race walking achievement so far would definitely be to have been chosen to represent my Country at the World Race Walking cup in Russia as well as the first time that I broke the 90min barrier in the 20km walk at Western Province Champs this year (88min 15sec).

6. What is your next goal? My next goal would only be to improve and the rest will take care of itself… As we say in : “Ek wil nie die perde voor die wa inspan nie.”

7. What is your favourite race, and why? There are a lot of favourite races for me. I like the half on the Platteland such as Swellendam, Beaufort-West, Napier and Meiringspoort. I like challenging off-road half marathons too and also the league walks.

8. What is your favourite type of training session? My favourite training session is 2000m’s. To push your body as hard and far as you can! That is when I am fit enough though… =)

9. Describe an average day in your life? An average day in my life would be to cycle on a single track (8,5km) with my roommate to class, come back from class, doing body exercises and go training and study.

10. How would you describe your dietary habits? At the Hostel I get 3 healthy meals a day and of course the food that my mother makes at home.

11. Do you have any other sporting interests? I love rugby and supporting my team namely the Stormers. I also love watching cricket as well as the Tour de France and tennis grand slams.

12. What other hobbies are you interested in? My hobbies would be playing tennis with friends at campus, mountain biking and hiking.

13. What do you do to relax? To relax I would go out and dance with friends, have a “rustige braai” after a big Stormers/Springbok rugby game or just go out for a movie.

14. Tell us something about yourself that we'd be surprised to know? I attended art classes as an additional subject in primary school. I like wearing “vellies” and drinking my coffee out of a “blikbeker”.

ARD ATHLETIC CLUB

ARD Athletic Club’s Fast and Scenic 3 Vlei 10km road race presented by Absolute Eyecare

On the 16th of September 2012 ARD AC will be hosting its second annual 10km road race and 5km Fun Run in . Our aim is to make this the most exciting race in the Southern Suburbs besides Oceans. We are hoping to make this an even better experience than our inaugural race last year. Fantastic support was shown towards our race last year and we will be counting on athletes repeating that this year.

With this mind we decided to add two exciting elements to our race for 2012:-

1. Special Sub 60 minutes wooden shields for participants in the 10km road race Participants in the 10km road race finishing under 60 minutes will receive a specially made wooden shield embossed with a special medal to commemorate this achievement……BUT you will have to enter and run in less than 60 minutes to see how it looks!

For those that will take it easy and enjoy the scenes along the route, don’t despair – you will receive a medal for finishing the race. The route is unchanged for 2012 and we trust the flat course will lead to a new course record.

2. Absolute Eye-Care 10km Club Challenge Another exciting element introduced to garner support from schools and sports clubs (other than registered athletics clubs) and introduce them to the camaraderie and joys of running. The first ten members, wearing identifiable team colours finishing TOGETHER will win R2000 and the Absolute Eyecare trophy. We will be allowing teams of 10 to run and they must display their school or club colours to qualify.

3. Other elements As per last year, we will again be handing out goodie bags to the first 800 participants registering for the race at our pre-registration venues (Sportsmans Warehouse in and – see flyers for times). Surprises ranging from R20 to will be packed in the bags, so who knows – your goodie bag might contain the big surprise! To ensure fairness we will be allocating 400 goodie bags per registration site.

Currently the value of our spot prizes is standing at R25 000 and we are still hard at work to increase it. Those that participated in last year’s event can testify that our spot prizes is well worth the wait.

The first three male and female finishers will be invited to breakfast in the VIP area.

Once again we will be ensuring that the same prize money will be allocated to our Senior and Junior winners with Juniors being rewarded up to 5th place! We have decided to keep our entry fee unchanged for 2012: licensed runners at R30, Juniors at R15 and FREE for those over 70 years entering on the day of the race. We are grateful to our sponsors for enabling us to keep the cost of entering low for another year.

Given the entry fee, the sub-60 shields, the Absolute Eyecare Club Challenge trophy and prize money, the spot prizes and goodie bags on offer we believe it is exceptional value for money to participate in our race. Come and join us on 16 September 2012 at Fairmount High school, Grassy Park for another memorable race! Get your sub-60 minute shoes on!

The ARD AC 3 Vlei Marketing team.

CELTIC HARRIERS

53rd Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km Road Race

Celtic Harriers is pleased to present the 53rd running of the Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km road race on Sunday, 28 October 2012. This year’s race was due to have been run on 19 August, but was postponed to 28 October to avoid clashing with Eid this year.

The Don Lock race was started in 1960 to commemorate the death of our club member who was killed in a road accident.

The start will be in Lansdowne Road in front of Brookside (Villager’s Rugby Club). The 8km starts at 07h30 and the 5km Fun Run at 07h45. The route is the traditional fast and flat “5 miler”, and runs past . The finish will be on the Villager’s “B” field.

Whilst the Don Lock has historically attracted some extremely impressive athletes, Celtic Harriers is keen to encourage runners of all ages, skill and experience to participate in either event.

The list of past winners of the Don Lock reads like a "Who’s Who" in WP middle-distance athletics. Of the men: Willie Olivier (who won the first nine races), Ferdie la Grange, Danie Malan, De Villiers Lamprecht, Julian Marsay, Greg Liefeldt, Peter Williams, Marius-Hugo Schlechter, John September, Makhosonke Fika and Lindikhaya Mthangayi. The ladies list is no less impressive: Judy Ryan, Isavel Roche-Kelly, Janet Grieve, Elana van Zyl, Monica Drogemoller, Jenifer Bam, Juliet Prowse, Esme Solomons, Nolene Conrad and Thuliswa Nonkonyana, amongst others.

We encourage you to join us and run in the footsteps of these great athletes. The women’s course record is held by Elana Meyer at 25 min 35 secs, and the men’s record of 22min 51sec is held by John September.

We hope to see you there!

EDGEMEAD RUNNERS

On the 8th August, Edgemead Runners once again hosted The Jive Women’s Day Challenge 5 & 10 km Run / Walk. The event was a huge success, thanks to the participation of many women, children … and non-women (“men dressed appropriately for the occasion”).

We were blessed with great weather, and Counselor James Vos fired the gun to set off the 10 km runners at 8am from the Bellville Stadium. Cape Talk was on hand providing roadside entertainment. The 5 km Run/Walk started at 8h15. Before the 5km participants set off, the fastest 10km runners had already finished the loop past Willow Bridge Mall, and on their way back past the stadium, were cheered on.

This year the race once again boasted well known runners, such as Kim Laxton, Candice Hall, Zintle Xiniwe, Ulrica Stander, Nomvuyisi Seti, Ursula Frans, Renee Scott, Charmaine Cupido and Edgemead runners very own Sandra van Graan!

The race was won by Zintle Xiniwe in a fantastic time of 36:07, with Ulrica Stander coming in seven seconds later and the third lady Nomvuyisi Seti another seven seconds later in a time of 36:21. All finishers in both distances received a medal and all pre-entries received a lovely t-shirt.

After the race, Jeff Finlayson and his band Shaboom entertained the runners until prize giving. The prize giving was compeered by Africa of Cape Talk. Lots of lucky Draw prizes were won by participants.

In the spirit of Women’s day, the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women & Children was the charity beneficiary. A cheque for R10,000.00 was handed over. Race results are published on www.wpa.org.za

WILD RUNNER

Please find a link below to the Cape Winter Trail Series 2012 Race Summary, Series results & photographs.

Rukadza makes it a Championship hat trick Bernard Rukadza ran into the Trail Series history books on Saturday, 18 August 2012 at the Cape Winter Trail Series final race at Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, Kleinmond, by becoming the first runner to secure a hat trick of Cape Winter Trail Series Championships. A slender seven second lead over Riaan Wildskut in the 13.8km race four of this year’s Championship ensured not only a hat trick of race wins in 2012, but his third Cape Winter Trail Series Championship title in as many years. This makes Rukadza the most successful Trail Series athlete in the five year history of these events. Greyling makes it three for three wins in the Ladies Championship In the women competition; it was a rampant Landie Greyling who stamped her authority at the sharp end of the Championship, with three wins out of the three races she participated in. Marie Wessels did her best to defend her 2011 title, but could not contain the dominant performance of Greyling and had to accept second this year in the overall Championship. CAPE TOWN MARATHON & CAPE TOWN 10KM

DEADLINE LOOMS FOR ENTRIES

The deadline for online entries for the Cape Town Marathon 2012 is fast approaching with Monday September 10 being the cut-off date for pre-entries to the 42.2km and 10km races.

The Marathon on Sunday 23 September starts in at 06h30 and takes runners out to Rondebosch before looping back to the new Green Point Urban Park via Salt River, the Foreshore and the promenade - a scenic route celebrating the beauty and history of the Mother City.

The 10km, which also starts at 06h30 in Adderley Street and ends at the Urban Park, is open to runners aged 15 and older. 10km finishers can relax in the Urban Park and support the full marathon runners as they come down the finish straight.

The marathon festival weekend also includes a 5km Fun Run and a 5 x 4.2km relay for clubs, companies and schools on Saturday 22 September. The events, supported by the , Cape Town Tourism, Western Cape Government: Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Peninsula Beverages, provide a wonderful opportunity for competitors to get involved in a big city event while promoting a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.

The Cape Town Marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2013 Comrades and Old Mutual , and organisers have eliminated steep hills and unnecessary turns where possible to create a route that offers opportunities for elite athletes to break records while being manageable for novices. The extended eight-hour cut-off allows first timers and walkers the chance to complete the 42.2km.

Runners can download an entry form or enter online at www.ctmarathon.co.za. For more information contact Western Province Athletics on www.wpa.org.za or 021 699 0615. You can also find the Cape Town Marathon on Twitter (@CTMarathon) or on Facebook (Facebook.com/CTMarathon).

Registration and number collection is at the Sea Point Civic Centre on Friday 21 September between 10am and 7pm and on Saturday 22 September between 10am and 5pm.
