Besides kick-starting fundraising for the project, this is also a substantial vote of confidence in the Trust’s ability to successfully work with Government in delivering world-class paediatric healthcare to all children in the Western Cape.

The strength of this public-private partnership is in no small part Spencer McNally due to two strong personalities whom we sadly bid some degree Chairman of farewell to recently. The Trust also began funding two new programmes this past year. The first is the Child Speech and Hearing project which the Trust is part funding in partnership with the Western Cape Government: Health. This two year pilot programme will dramatically improve the current services in our province for Louise Driver children who suffer from hearing and speech conditions, while CEO 4 5 Your generosity has enabled us to achieve so much. 2014 Funding the Breatheasy Tracheostomy and Ventilation Home Care Programme, a unique nurse-led initiative at the Hospital that is globally recognised as an exceptional model of care for chronically-ill children. The programme trains TRUST and supports parents to manage the care of their children with tracheostomies, so that they return home to their families and avoid the long hospital stays SUCCESSES characteristically facing tracheostomy patients around the world. The second year of the inpatient Paediatric Palliative Care Unit at the Sarah Fox Children’s Convalescent Hospital was funded, providing a multidisciplinary family- centred paediatric palliative care service for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. The service provides support for up to 65 children and their families annually. The first year of the community-based Paediatric Rehabilitation Programme at St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children was funded. The service provides intensive therapies for children, training for parents to support their children at home, and a post-discharge home-visiting programme to help children function as best they can in their own home environments. The launch of the Child Speech and Hearing Demonstration project, a joint initiative with the Western Cape Government: Health and the Carel du Toit Centre, which will introduce, test and refine a brand new model of district-level health services for children with speech and hearing disorders in the Western Cape. The implementation of the model will enable young children to access preventative, rehabilitative and curative services quickly and easily close to home, and will free up tertiary hospitals to treat children with specialised needs. The newly opened Woolworths Childsafe Research and Educational Centre was built on the Hospital grounds, where patients’ families and the general public will be educated on creating safe environments for their children to decrease the number of avoidable child-related accidents. The Paediatric Ward at Victoria Hospital was upgraded and is now a modernised area with adequate isolation cubicles and staff amenities in a child-friendly space. Over 000 was raised to fund 9 Saturdays of surgery for the Weekend Waiting List Initiative at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. These non-critical surgeries, such as Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) and general paediatric surgery cases are performed on a Saturday. Though not life threatening, the surgery is life- changing for all of these patients and their families, allowing for an extra day of surgery a week. Funding for the University of ’s African Paediatric Fellowship Programme and the Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative, which has enabled 25 doctors and 39 nurses to be trained in paediatric specialties in 2014. Many will be the first sub-specialists in their home countries. 6 7 The Children’s Hospital Trust would like to partner with you in funding these key 2015 projects that will help children in their journey back to childhood through: FUNDRAISING Developing the Practical Approach to Care Kit for children (PACK Child), a comprehensive clinical guideline for doctors and nurses in primary care clinics. INITIATIVES The guideline will help over-stretched nurses in the Western Cape to diagnose, treat and refer children quicker and more accurately, so that unnecessary hospitalisation is avoided and children recover sooner.

Establishing the Child Speech and Hearing Demonstration project for children that will enable them to access screening, treatment and support for speech and hearing disorders at home and at nearby clinics and other facilities. Early intervention is crucial for good outcomes for children with communication disorders, but has been largely unavailable in the public sector until now.

Establishing a children’s hospital radio station led by children, which will engage, educate, stimulate and importantly, create a platform for communication between hospitalised children, their families and the health services. The first child-produced radio station in the world, the project aims to improve children’s experiences of hospital and of their illness; increase adult understanding and inform the improvement in health worker and hospital practice.

The largest Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Africa is situated at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Children in need of specialised critical care are referred from all over the African continent, yet this vital unit only has 22 of the 35 ICU beds set aside for children across public and private sectors in the Western Cape Province. This life-saving unit cannot keep up with the demands resulting in an average of 50 surgeries being cancelled or postponed annually. The space between beds, patients and specialised medical equipment is well below the accepted global norm.

The Children’s Hospital Trust has committed to an ambitious R100 million fundraising drive to expand and upgrade the PICU facility. This expansion will effect an increase in bed capacity to 39 beds, which includes a 10-bed High Care Unit for neonatal patients and the establishment of 8 isolation cubicles. It will also provide more space around beds to accommodate critical life-saving equipment, 24/7 nursing staff for a higher patient-to-nurse ratio and adequate space for vigilant parents.

8 9 In 2014 the Children’s Hospital Trust received more than R2.5million in GUARDIANS legacy gifts that have benefited priority projects, which include the Parents’ CIRCLE OF LIFE PROGRAMME Accommodation expansion, Childsafe’s new building, the new Radiology LEGACY Complex, the Oncology Department and the Paediatric ICU upgrade.
