California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. When Les heard he was on tour a few years later, he signed this guitar to Bruce. Lester William Polsfuss was an inventor and musician. A talented musician as well as inventor, Les Paul is credited with various recording innovations and his skilled guitar playing, however he is probably best known for helping to design the Gibson Les Paul.The consigner of this item worked directly with Les Paul. 2: 1963 Jan & Dean Master Tapes USD 3,000 - 5,000 Two master tracks from the album "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'". Recorded on February 20th, 1963. Track list: "Rhythm of the Rain" and "Mr. Bass Man." Arranged and produced by Jan Berry and supervised by Lou Adler, "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'" is the duo's first Liberty album, and included the usual backup of high quality musicians, giving Jan & Dean ample opportunity for vocal acrobatics and comic antics in "Mr. Bass Man," while their rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain" has a low-key charm that wasn't usually associated with the duo.Jan & Dean were an American rock duo made up of Jan Berry and Dean Torrence. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States. -
