Luella High School Pride News Week #29 Issued: March 18, 2019 We have completed 133 school days and have 44 school days remaining. Just a quick reminder that this Monday, March 18 is a student holiday and a district professional learning day. Students return to school on Tuesday, March 19. The 3rd Nine Weeks grading period did end on Friday, March 15; grades for the 3rd Nine Weeks will be available in the parent/student IC portal on Friday, March 22. During this past week, students also completed their third benchmark tests, which will assess their level of mastery on the standards that students should have learned through the first three quarters of the school year. The Junior – Senior Prom will be on Saturday, March 30 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Prom hours will be 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM. Pre-purchased tickets are required. Students must present official identification as they check-in at Prom; this includes LHS students and any dates who do not attend LHS. Spring Break will be April 1 – 5. Henry County Schools, including Luella High School, will be closed for the entire Spring Break. Students return to school on Monday, April 8. SAFETY AND SECURITY UPDATES Every day, we work to provide the safest and secure school that we can. I have always tried to provide you with information about our efforts and ways that you can assist us. I want to offer you an update from HCS Superintendent Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis. At the Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 11, Dr. Davis provided the Board and those in the audience an update on the progress of improvements to the districtwide Safety and Security initiative, now titled SAFE HENRY. Here is a link to the SAFE HENRY information – also, posted on our website, which is the full update that the district has provided. It includes a: Video Update on Safety and Security from Dr. Davis, Written summary of Securing Our Campuses information, Bulleted list of items that are in place to order to Secure Our Future. Let me encourage you to review all of these materials so that you can know exactly how proactive our school system continues to be on making safety and security its top priority. PRIDE OF THE PRIDE National History Day Competition Please congratulate the following students who will move on to the State Competition for National History Day based on their exemplary performance at the recent regional competition: Our Mission: Luella High School will graduate each student: college, career and life ready. Angel Yang – Individual Documentary Makylah Jackson and Daniel Ruiz – Group Documentary Nicole Cortes and Isha Shah – Group Exhibit Vidhi Patel – Individual Website Math Team In last week’s Fayette County Math Invitational on Thursday evening, Freshman Kaleb Bates placed 1st in the Junior Varsity competition. The JV Team placed 2nd among all the JV teams. Please congratulate team members: Kaleb Bates, Hailey Bos, Shailey Desai, Afusonio Oiboh, Kayla Grant, Victoreya McKissick, Nicole Cortes, and Isha Shah HOSA Please congratulate our HOSA public health team for placing 1st at this past week’s state conference and also congratulate student leader India Ward for assisting in organizing this great group of hard- working students. Track and Field The Track and Field Lions competed recently in the Christian Taylor Invitational at Sandy Creek High School. Please join me in congratulating the team and the highlighted athletes below: Girls Highlights o Kamorah Castro placed 3rd in the 100-meter dash out of 50 athletes and placed 9th in the 200-meter dash out of 62 athletes. o JaBresha Palmer placed 9th out of 25 athletes in the 800-meter run. o Lois Nteff placed 10th in the 1600-meter run. o Aniyah Cumberbatch placed 6th in the 3200-meter run. o Jailan Logan placed 9th in girls’ shotput. Boys Highlights o Evan Stephens placed 16th out of 82 athletes in the 200-meter dash. o Mark Goode placed 10th out of 62 athletes in the 800-meter run. Please refer to that list each week, then come out and support our Lions. o Senior/Graduation information As discussed earlier, safety and security remain a top priority; therefore, for the safety of everyone, our exterior doors will remain locked throughout the day. If you are visiting our school, you must come into the school through the designated, unlocked doors, then into the front office and there be issued an official visitor’s badge. The school opens at 6:45 AM each school day and closes at 4:45 PM. The front office is open, and telephones answered from 7:45 AM to 4:00 PM. END-OF-THE-YEAR STANDARDIZED TESTING End-of-Pathway exams for third year CTAE students: April 15 – 26. Georgia Milestones End-of-Course tests for students in: 9th Grade and 11th Grade Literature, Algebra I, Geometry, Physical Science, Biology, US History and Economics: May 6 – 13. Advanced Placement Exams for students in AP classes who register for the applicable AP exam: May 6 – 17. Our Mission: Luella High School will graduate each student: college, career and life ready.
