LUELLA HIGH SCHOOL Pride News #29: March 19 – 23 There are 50 school days before Graduation – 45 class days before senior grades are finalized and 10 class days before Spring Break. 3RD NINE WEEKS ENDING: The 3rd Nine Weeks of the school year closed on Friday, March 16. Teachers will finalize grades this week, and grades will be posted for the 3rd Nine Week grading period on Monday, March 26 in the parent/student IC portal. WOMEN AND YOUTH MARCH – STUDENT WALKOUT: On Wednesday, March 14 our students participated in the national Women and Youth March Walk Out. Our event was student organized. Approximately 75% of our students participated at the event on the baseball field. Here is how the students framed the event for their peers: “We are remembering the 17 lives lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland, FL) shooting on February 14, 2018. The walk out will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 14, 2018 on the Luella High School baseball field. During the time of the walk out, there will be a banner participants can sign and students of Luella High School will be reading the names and short biographies of the students and teachers who died during the February shooting. This is NOT a mandatory event, nor is it an opportunity to skip or advocate a certain political agenda. The purpose of this event is for commemorating the lives lost due to senseless violence.” It was so rewarding to watch this event. I think this event would rank as one of the very best days that I have experienced at Luella.

  • “Items of Interest”
GHSA “Items of Interest” December 2005 / January 2006 Seasons Greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM YOUR GHSA STAFF Front row (L-R): Julie Jones, Pam Thompson, Joyce Kay, Sheri Coker and Tanya Anderson. Back row (L-R): Dennis Payne, Steve Figueroa, Ralph Swearngin, Ernie Yarbrough and Gary Phillips. In the Greek language, there are two words that could be used to communicate the English word “new.” One strictly means new in time or unused. The other carries the meaning of higher quality. As the GHSA looks toward the unused days of 2006, there is a strong desire to provide a higher quality of service to member schools. In 2006, we look forward to the continuation of high quality athletics and competitive activities. There is every reason to believe that the great accomplishments in the fall sports and activities season will be matched in the winter and spring seasons. The use of central sites for both Team Dual Wrestling (Macon Centreplex) and Traditional Wrestling (The Arena at Gwinnett) has stimulated excitement. On Saturday, April 29, the second Student Leadership Summit will be held at the Macon Centreplex. Information about this event will be forthcoming after the first of the year. The first 100 schools to register will be able to send a female athlete, a male athlete, and a coach or administrator to this one-day conference. On Monday, June 26, the inaugural Coaches Symposium on Sports Medicine will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest as a prelude to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association annual conference. Recognized leaders in sports medicine will conduct practical workshops for the benefit of GHSA coaches.

  • “Items of Interest”
GHSA “Items of Interest” September 2011 Welcome to the Complicated World of Reclassification Imagine a situation involving very complicated issues where everyone had a different opinion about these matters and no one could find a way to make everyone happy. Welcome to the world of reclassification. At the semi-annual meeting of the GHSA Executive Committee this week, the association moved to a system of six classifications. The difference between the plan adopted in August and the plan approved in May is that the latest plan affords some flexibility in the percentages that the Reclassification Committee can use to place schools in the appropriate classification. This flexibility was included to address issues where schools had extensive travel in their regions, but did not meet the criteria for the isolation rule. Superintendents and Principals have registered their concerns with the GHSA in regard to travel costs and time out of class for the students. This is especially problematic in the spring semester. It has been demonstrated over time that the issues of travel, time out of class, and competitive fairness present challenges that cannot be completely satisfied for all schools. The Reclassifica- tion Committee attempts to balance these concerns as much as possible. The state of Georgia presents some challenging dynamics. The geography of Central and South Georgia is extensive. The number of schools and the number of students served in North Georgia is extremely large – and growing. The GHSA has not learned how to control the economic issues and the demographic shifts that occur in the state. This GHSA generally has to react to those factors.

LUELLA HIGH SCHOOL Pride News Issued for: September 16, 2019 Week #7 We are now 31 days into the school year and have 5 class days before our Fall Break, which is the next week: September 23 – 27. 2019 – 2020 HCS School Calendar Thank you all who came out to last week’s parent informational nights with the counselors. We will continue to work to provide you with applicable information. We had a spirit-filled Pep Rally on Friday at the end of the day. Our student government leadership facilitated the pep rally where the band provided spirited music; we honored our fall sport teams, enjoyed performances by our cheer, dance and step teams and honored the 2019 state AAAA champion Jada Blanton (high jump). In the most anticipated moment, Senior basketball player Keely Brown announced that she had chosen Fresno State University from the many basketball scholarship offers that she had received – the crowd loved it! Congratulations to Keely and her parents. This pep rally was a wonderful way to end our school week! PRIDE OF THE PRIDE Please join me in congratulating senior Ryan Cortes. He has been designated as a College Board National Merit Semi-Finalist, which is one of the most significant national honors that any high school can achieve. The designation is based on performance on the PSAT. He will now compete to become a National Merit Finalist and Scholar and is one of only two students in the Henry County Schools this year to earn this honor. Our Softball Lady Lions won a major victory against Woodward Academy last week by a score of 23 – 8.

  • June 12, 2020 Greetings Graduating Class of 2020 and Families, We Know That You Have Been Anxiously Awaiting Updates Regarding Y
June 12, 2020 Greetings Graduating Class of 2020 and Families, We know that you have been anxiously awaiting updates regarding your senior activities and graduation ceremony plans to properly round out your school year and appropriately celebrate the incredible accomplishment of graduating high school in the most unprecedented of times. As it was shared back in March by Superintendent Davis and relayed over the course of our closure, we were going to work tirelessly to do everything we could to uphold the traditions of our senior class, most importantly graduation. We are pleased to share that we believe we have done just that, and here is the latest update. After close consideration of the evolving guidance related to COVID-19, regular collaboration with local public health officials, and review of the Governor’s current executive order which allows for large-crowd gatherings if social distancing can be ensured, we are pleased to present all graduates the opportunity to make a choice between one of two options to commemorate and celebrate their graduation: either participate in a traditional graduation ceremony or participate in an arranged private, individual ceremony. Additionally, Henry County Schools has been and will continue to work directly with the District 4 Public Health Department to assess community health risks, mitigate and manage large-crowd risks, and to plan every detail of the commencement events. Option 1: Traditional Graduation Ceremony at Atlanta Motor Speedway with 8 Guest Tickets For any graduate who wishes to participate in a traditional ceremony, we are pleased to announce that Henry County Schools is planning to proceed with traditional ceremonies the week of June 22 – 26.
