LUELLA HIGH SCHOOL

Pride News Week of August 30, 2021

As we approach the end of August, we have now completed 18 days of school.

Remember that Friday, September 3 is a full school holiday and Monday, September 6 is the Labor Day holiday.

DAY-TO-DAY CHALLENGES Last week was overall a good week; however, we continue to have students and staff members out to Covid-19 related issues, as well as not having enough substitute teachers to cover all of the classrooms of the teachers who are absent on a daily basis. As you know, transportation continues to be inconsistent. Students who are late in the morning due to a late bus are excused for the tardy or absence. In the afternoon, we do continue to have a couple of buses coming after 3:30.

While these continue to be challenges, our staff and students are working hard every day to make the absolute best that we can of each school day. I do appreciate your continued understanding and support. Please let me know if you have questions.

IMPACT ACADEMY CURRENT INFORMATION For those families who continue to be interested in moving their student to Impact Academy; there continues to be a waiting list for Impact Academy. The process to request enrollment to Impact Academy begins by contacting the student’s high school counselor. We do not have additional information about the length of the waiting list or how long a student’s name may be on the list.

COVID – 19 UPDATES (See HC, HCS, LHS dashboards below)

Henry County Schools continues at Level 4 on the Covid-19 mitigation continuum.

You have continued to receive the District’s notification IC messages, identifying that there had been Covid-19 positive students and/or staff members on campus. Actual statistics are provided through the Covid-19 dashboards, updated as of 8/23/21. Those are included below. Data for last week (8/23-27) will be updated on the dashboards on Monday, 8/30. Here’s the link to review those data.

It is essential that any household notify the school if you have a positive Covid-19 case. • When notified, we follow a detailed protocol that includes: reviewing the student’s attendance record, class schedule, extra-curricular activities whether the student rides a bus, the date when the student or staff member began symptoms and the date of the positive Covid-19 test result. • If the student or staff member has been on campus, we then use the District’s Covid-19 close contact investigation procedures to determine if any students or staff members were in close contact with the Covid-19 positive student. o Any close contacts are contacted directly. • After completing this process, quarantine dates are established, and the family is notified. • Students are automatically enrolled in the HCS Bridge program, which is the HCS program to support students’ academic progress while in quarantine. o Students are responsible for checking in and being counting present through the HCS Bridge program each day of their Covid-19 related absence.

Our Mission: Luella High School will graduate each student: college, career and life-ready.

When students remain masked continually indoors, the likelihood of being a close contact is significantly reduced. I will continue to work with our staff and students to be sure that everyone is wearing their face masks at school. I ask for your help as well in prioritizing to your student the essential nature of their wearing a mask consistently at school.

Please be sure that your student comes to school with a face mask.

LEARNING HOW TO GO TO SCHOOL - update While last week had its challenges, we are continuing to “learn how to go to school again.” • We are having to learn how to be together (some 1200 of us under 1 roof), how to get to class on time (which really needs work), how to daily be sure that all of us are taken care of, how to sit in a classroom and be engaged for all the minutes that the class meets and how to do that with 7 classes on all period days and 4 classes on block days, etc.

We must prioritize the first few rules that we are concentrating on: • Being on time o Teachers are beginning their class tardy policy. I have asked them to contact parents about chronically late students to class. • Continue to strictly wear face masks at all time (other than when eating) covering the nose and chin. • Being respectful to all staff members and their peers. • Being engaged during all classes, meaning that they follow teacher instructions and complete all work that is assigned.

This process will take weeks to months, but we must work with each other to prioritize to ALL of our students that these are the expectations of being a Luella High School student. I definitely am asking for your help. You can make a difference here - - please have this talk with your student.
