HEMIPTERA OF MAURITIUS Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in The Faculty of Science, LONDON UNIVERSITY by ALFRED JOSEPH EMILIEN ORIAN, B.Sc. (HONS.) A.C.R. Dip. Agric. St. Andrews (Maur.) (Maur.) Department of Zoology & Applied Entomology, Imperial College of Science & Technology, South Kensington, London, S.W.7. March, 1965. 162. VOL.Z. XMFennahius+: A new genus of KINNARIDAE (Hemiptera - Fulgoroidea) common to Mauritius and Reunion. The KINNARIDAE show affinities with the CIXIIDAE not merely in their general overall resemblance, but in a number of morphological points to which attention has already been drawn by Muir and other workers, e.g., Metcalf, Fennah, Synave. Conventionally separated from one another by wing-venation, the quite dissimilar structure of the male genitalia confirms that the difference is of familial rank. The presence of wax-producing areas on the sixth, seventh and eighth tergites (vide Plate 18f - top left preparation) of the adult female is a character shared with the MEENOPLIDAE but not the CIXIIDAE. It is rather unfortunate that the members of the family have never been the subject of a special study. Examination of some of their characters (e.g., ? genitalia and text) suggests that in many features they present significant departures from the standard fulgoroid pattern. The presence of a large bursa-copulatrix and reduced valvulae (vide Plate 18b) in Paramicrixia diaphana makes investigation of the live insect highly desirable. The occurrence )f tblemmatarl-t minute ocelli-like structures placed close to each ocellus deserves +The author is privileged to dedicate this new genus to Mr.

~ HEM I PTE R A 0 F M AU R I T IUS Thesis submi tte,d for the degree of ,Doctor of Philosoph~ in , , I The Faculty 'of Science, LONDON, UNIVERSITY by I ALFRED JOSE~ EMILIEN'ORIAN, B.Sc. (HONS.) A.C.R. Dip. Agric. St~ Andrews (Maur. ) (Maur. ) Department of Zoology & Applied Entomology, Imperial I College of Science & Technology, South Kensington, London, S.W.? ABSTRACT An account is given of the apparent history of the flora and fauna of Mauritius. Work by early collectors of Mascarene Hemiptera is outlined and that of more recent authors is reviewed critically. Evidence is adduced to show that the earlier hemipterous fauna is now confined to a small strip of upland subtropical forest and isolated mountain tops, one restricting factor being competition from species inadvertently introduced mostly from Madagascar and Africa. The genital structure, trichobothrial pattern, and skeletal morphology of type material is discussed in detail. Frequently the' work of previous authors was unsatisfactory. Unreported structures and organs are described, e.g., gular organs of Laccotrephes (NEPIDAE). Detailed keys to families and lower taxa have been prepared and various dubious statements on morphological points have been clarified, e.g. the male genitalia of CICADIDAE, hemelytral 'fusion' in a gelastocorid. It is shown that in many families male characters are generally the more useful to separate genera (e.g., NEPIDAE, PENTATOMIDAE, CICADIDAE), in others (e.g., KINNARIDAE) the female affords the better characters. A new tribe is described (DISTANTADINI CICADIDAE) as are 7 new genera and six new species; two new specific names are introduced to replace homonyms; corrections have been made as to the authorship of subfamily, tribal and other names, especially in CICADIDAE and APHIDIDAE.

  • Fruit from China Into the Continental United States a Qualitative
Pest Risk Assessment for Citrus from China Importation of Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) United States fruit from China into the continental Department of Agriculture United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service A Qualitative, Pathway-Initiated Pest October 3, 2017 Risk Assessment Version 4.0 Agency Contact: Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory Center for Plant Health Science and Technology Plant Protection and Quarantine Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service United States Department of Agriculture 1730 Varsity Drive, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27606 Pest Risk Assessment for Citrus from China Executive Summary The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) prepared this risk assessment document to examine plant pest risks associated with importing commercially produced fruit of Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) for consumption from China into the continental United States. The risk ratings in this risk assessment are contingent on the application of all components of the pathway as described in this document (e.g., washing, brushing, and disinfesting). Citrus fruit produced under different conditions were not evaluated in this risk assessment and may have a different pest risk. The proposed species or varieties of citrus for export are as follows: Citrus sinensis (sweet orange), C. grandis (= C. maxima) cv. guanximiyou (pomelo), C. kinokuni (cherry orange), C. poonensis (ponkan), and C. unshiu (Satsuma mandarin). This assessment supersedes a qualitative assessment completed by APHIS in 2014 for the importation of citrus from China. This assessment is independent of the previous assessment, however it draws from information in the previous document. This assessment is updated to be inline with our current methodology, incorporates important new research, experience, and other evidence gained since 2014.

Lab. Kyoto Univ., Vol. 30, pp. 85-125 January 2015 Biological notes on herbivorous insects feeding on myrmecophytic Macaranga trees in the Lambir Hills National Park, Borneo Usun SHIMIZU-KAYA, Keiko KISHIMOTO-YAMADA, Takao ITIOKA ABSTRACT Myrmecophytes are plants that harbor ant colonies in domatia, which are hollows in the plant body. Most ant species that colonize myrmecophytes aggressively attack and regulate the abundances of herbivorous insects that would otherwise feed on the leaves of host trees. Although previous studies have described the interactions between myrmecophytes and herbivorous insects, a large proportion of herbivores that are able to feed on these trees are still unrecorded and details of their feeding habits are largely unexplored. Here, we compile biological notes on some of the herbivorous insects that feed on several species of Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae) growing in the Malayan archipelago, including those that are myrmecophytic. The information assembled here is based on our field observations, sampling, and rearing of insects, which we have conducted since 1994 in the tropical lowland forest of the Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak, in Malaysian Borneo. We also summarize existing published information. For the convenience of future studies of herbivores that feed on Macaranga, we have included a large selection of images to show the morphologies and ecological traits of herbivores, including their structures at different growth stages and the marks made by their activities, such as leaf-chewing, leaf-mining, and gall formation.
