I know some of you Old Schoolers are saying that · FAQ back in the day a live concert from Japan was released but that has never seen the light of DVD and is long out of print on VHS as well. Younger fans · Contact Us are saying “what’s a VHS” but I digress. This concert was filmed in Puerto · Stats Rico back in March of 2004 and it finds a reunited lineup of Stryper performing the greatest hits from their albums in front of a very enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. During the “Hair Metal” years of the eighties Visit Our Friends At: Stryper was a band that ruled the video networks of MTV and were immediately recognizable from both their positive Christian message as well as their yellow and black spandex outfits. Today Stryper has abandoned the spandex costumes but the message and the music remains strong and sounds better than ever before. The DVD is a great way to catch up on these guys and what they are capable of musically and this is especially true if you Who's Online only know of songs like “Honestly” or “Calling On You”. There is certainly a lot more to absorb with this performance and you will soon find that in the concert setting that this is a band that There are currently 32 sounds really, really good. I am confident that you will be impressed with just how good as a guests online. matter of fact. The show in PR was led up to with the band reuniting around their CD Best Of compilation “7: The Best Of Stryper”; it was a disc that found all tracks remastered and sounding very upfront as opposed to the original mixes. As the show plays it becomes clear Google Ads that the members of Stryper are all kick ass musicians, and the vocal powers you hear on the records are not the result of any studio trickery. Lead singer/guitarist Michael Sweet will show that he can shred as much as lead guitarist Oz Fox while drummer Brother Robert Sweet (the visual timekeeper) mans a massive kit that he pounds relentlessly. He sits sideways if you didn’t know and I have always felt that he was one of the best Hard Rock drummers to come Nas Concert out of the genre. Bass guitar is handled by Tim Gaines of course and the keyboards are done by Video Brent Jeffers. As many might know, Stryper viewed their music as a ministry and the band Song downloads, shows that their message is as serious as ever when they all stop performing to disburse bibles photos, fan Q&A to the audience. They tell the crowd that they wish they could give one to everyone and you Yahoo! Music: know that they mean it. During the show Michael periodically addresses the crowd about this being the reason that they are here and at all times seems as genuine as can be. No gimmicks Nissan Live Sets or tricks here folks this is the real deal. Michael even prays with the audience at the end of the music.yahoo.com show. I’ve always loved this band and found most of my favorites represented during the set. It was also nice to see this on DVD as I caught one of the reunion shows in New York when the band PURE Cirkus passed through town. Standout numbers are “Soldiers Under Command”, “Loud And Clear” and Evil Live Variety “More Than A Man”. I did find a couple of moments to be amusing like some of the fans making the traditional Metal “horns”, which is not a normal sight at a Stryper show or at least none that Show July 26th, I ever caught and the closer of “Winter Wonderland”. Given this was filmed in March and in Heavens, Seattle sunny Puerto Rico as well it might bring forth a chuckle despite it being a very sound and www.purecirkus.com rocking cover of the Christmas classic. There are a handful of bonus live tracks and solos from 1989 since it shows the band as they were in their heyday (spandex and big hair for everyone). This great concert and its music will remind many of a special time in Metal history and that not all the music is dark, somber and loaded with sinister references. Metal Missionaries to the Nation | 103 Metal Missionaries to the Nation: Christian Heavy Metal Music, “Family Values,” and Youth Culture, 1984–1994 Eileen Luhr n June 26, 1987, members of the Christian metal band Stryken attended a Motley Crüe concert in San Antonio, Texas. It was not Ouncommon for Christian bands to attend secular concerts; indeed, many bands explained that they did so in order to keep current on musical trends. But Stryken arrived at the show ready for confrontation. According to the Christian metal magazine White Throne, the band, “wearing full suits of armor . and bearing a 14 x 8 foot wooden cross,” “stormed the doors of the arena, pushing through the crowds of teenagers and television cameras down the corridor towards the inlet to the main stage.” At this point, the “boys in armor” erected the cross and “began to preach to the massed [sic] of kids who were gathering all around.” The authorities quickly intervened, and, “ordered to remove ‘the cross’ or face arrest, the members of Stryken continued to speak openly about Jesus Christ, and were one by one hand-cuffed and forcibly removed from the arena.”1 Stryken’s actions—which invoked the persecuted early Christians described in the Acts of the Apostles—offer some insights into Christian metal during the 1980s. Motley Crüe’s music and the lifestyle of its members were designed to shock middle America, but the band had become one of the most successful acts of the 1980s. By upstaging Motley Crüe’s over-the-top behavior with their bold act, Stryken attempted to claim heavy metal’s reputation for outrageousness for Christianity.

  • Without a Doubt, Stryper Is One of the Top Christian Rock Bands of All-Time, and Certainly the Most Celebrated Christian Metal Band of All Time
Without a doubt, Stryper is one of the top Christian rock bands of all-time, and certainly the most celebrated Christian metal band of all time. Comprised of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums), Stryper has been rocking since 1983, and is responsible for such '80s metal classic albums as 'Soldiers Under Command,' 'To Hell with the Devil,' In God We Trust,' and such MTV hit singles/videos as "Calling on You," "Free," and "Honestly." After a sabbatical for much of the 1990's, Stryper returned strong in the early 21st century. But it was not until their 2011 covers set, 'The Covering,' that the aforementioned definitive Stryper was reinstated, as the band welcomed Gaines back into the fold. "Tim is an original member, so there's a certain magic and chemistry that you have with the original line-up, that you can't replace with someone else," explains Michael Sweet. "It's just there, it is what it is. And Tim brings that to the band. He's a very talented bass player, singer, and keyboard player. He brings a certain chemistry and energy to the band, and it takes the four of us to recreate that." Running the gamut from 1970's era classic rock (Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," Deep Purple's "Highway Star," Kiss' "Shout It Out Loud," etc.) to 1980's era heavy metal (Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell," the Scorpions' "Blackout," "Iron Maiden's "The Trooper," etc.), 'The Covering' is certain to be a most welcomed addition to Stryper fan's album collections.

A study of kit drummers' identities, practices and learning Gareth Dylan Smith Institute of Education, University of London Submitted for PhD 1 ABSTRACT Drummers have largely been neglected in scholarly literature on music and education, despite being active in large numbers in popular music and having an increasing presence in the music education arena. The study explores the identities, practices and learning of kit drummers in the UK from an emic perspective, using a mixed methodological approach with a focus on qualitative sociological enquiry drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis and grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 teenage drummers and 12 adult drummers; both age groups were interviewed to allow for consideration of whether adults' reflections on their formative years differ greatly from those of teenage drummers today. Secondary data were gathered from a brief questionnaire conducted with 100 more drummers to support and contextualize the richer interview data. Data were also taken from relevant biographies, audio/visual media and journalistic sources.

This particular DVD captured the band on March 6, 2004 in Puerto Rico, where the band performed in front of a very sizeable crowd. Clearly the 80s is not over in Puerto Rico! Fronted by Michael Sweet, the band in 2004 was powerful, played with precision, and were anything but a washed up 80s act. Primarily concentrating on their more metallic, riff and power chord driven tunes, the band played like a well- oiled machine, leading you to believe that they never took any time off. Michael Sweet's voice is something that will leave you in awe. While Rob Halford may be known as the Metal God, Sweet's high-pitched screams make Mr. Halford look like an old hack. Sweet's range is phenomenal, maybe better than in the band's heyday. The rest of the band come of similarly - Oz Fox is a Guitar God, Robert Sweet is an attention-grabbing drummer, and the now departed Tim Gaines laid down some thumping basslines. All together the band present beautiful live harmonies, something a lot of other bands fake with pre- recorded backing tracks. The band's image is toned down, but Michael, Oz, and especially Robert still look like rock stars.
