Varanasi Division
Varanasi Division Varanasi is one of the oldest cities of the world and occupies an important place amongst all the religious, cultural and spiritual cities of India. Varanasi is situated on the bank of the holy river Ganges. Most famous temple of Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath temple, one of the twelve Jyotirligas, is located here. Tourists, not only from various parts of India but also those from foreign countries all over the world, visit this place very frequently. Sarnath, the famous Baudh Pilgrimage is situated very close by, at a distance of about 8 Kms only. This is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first Preaching. Varanasi is also famous for its cottage industry, handicraft and products thereof, including world famous Benarasi sarees too. Varanasi Division of North Eastern Railway was formed on 01.05.1969. The main routes of the division on Broad Gauge Line comprise of Gorakhpur-Chhapra, Bhatni-Allahabad City, Chhapra-Aunrihar, Mau-Shahganj, Gorakhpur- Paniyahwa, Indara-Phephna, Aunrihar-Jaunpur , Kaptanganj-Thawe and Chhapra Kachery-Thawe sections, while Indara-Dohri Ghat is only Meter Gauge section. Varanasi division is mainly a passenger traffic oriented division. Until 1981, when the work of gauge conversion started on Gorakhpur-Siwan section, this division was basically Meter Gauge route system. Subsequently, gauge conversion was completed in phases : Varanasi-Bhatni (year-1990), Varanasi-Allahabad City (year-1993-94), Aunrihar-Chhapra (year-1996), Mau-Shahganj (year- 1997), Gorakhpur-Paniyahwa (year-1997), Indara-Phephna (year-1999), Aunrihar-Jaunpur, Kaptangaj-Thawe (year 2011) and Chhapra Kachery-Thawe (year 2016-17). Thus, barring only Indara-Dohri Ghat section, Gauge Conversion has been completed on all other sections of the division. -

Global Hand Washing Day 2018 State Report: Uttar Pradesh Global Hand Washing Day - 15th October 2018 State Report: Uttar Pradesh Global Hand washing Day is on October 15th. The day is marked by worldwide celebrations, events, and advocacy campaigns. This year in 2018, more than 11.6 million people promoted the simple, life- saving act of hand washing with soap on Global Hand washing Day across the state. The day was founded by the Global Hand washing Partnership in 2008 to help communities, advocates, and leaders spread the word about hand washing with soap. This year’s Global Hand washing Day theme, “Clean Hands – a recipe for health,” emphasizes the linkages between hand washing and food. Hand washing is an important part of keeping food safe, preventing diseases, and helping children grow strong. Yet, hand washing is not practiced as consistently or as thoroughly as it should be. Diarrheal disease limits the body’s ability to absorb nutrition from food and is a major cause of death in low resource settings. Hand washing with soap is an effective way to prevent these losses. Global Hand washing Day raises awareness of the importance of hand washing and encourages action to promote and sustain hand washing habits. Organizations and individuals can celebrate Global Hand washing Day by planning an event, participating in a digital campaign, or simply spreading the word about the importance of hand washing. Transportation Management Lesson 1 Introduction & Systems of Working 1.1 INTRODUCTION 1.101 Economic and industrial progress of a country depends to a great extent on the efficiency of the transportation sector. So far as our country is concerned most of the passenger and goods traffic is carried by rail and road. Other modes of transportation such as airways, waterways and coastal shipping carry a very small percentage of total traffic. Importance of Railways 1.102 Railways in our country should play a more important role in the surface transport sector because they have the following advantages: (a) Railways are about six times more fuel efficient than roadways. (b) Railways carry substantial quantum of traffic by electric traction, thereby saving precious oil resource. (c) Railways make better land use. (d) Railways cause less pollution. 1.103 The importance of proper development and efficient management of the Indian Railways to meet the future demands of traffic adequately and efficiently cannot, therefore, be overemphasized. Role and Objectives of the Transportation Department 1.104 The role of the Transportation Department is to provide transportation efficiently by making best utilization of resources such as locomotives, coaches, wagons, track, signalling and communication equipments, fuel, electricity and staff. 1.105 Objectives of the Transportation Departments are: (i) Providing good quality of service to rail users and, (ii) Ensuring high productivity of resources made available to it as stated earlier.
