Global Hand Washing Day - 15th October 2018 State Report: Uttar Pradesh
Global Hand washing Day is on October 15th. The day is marked by worldwide celebrations, events, and advocacy campaigns. This year in 2018, more than 11.6 million people promoted the simple, life- saving act of hand washing with soap on Global Hand washing Day across the state. The day was founded by the Global Hand washing Partnership in 2008 to help communities, advocates, and leaders spread the word about hand washing with soap. This year’s Global Hand washing Day theme, “Clean Hands – a recipe for health,” emphasizes the linkages between hand washing and food. Hand washing is an important part of keeping food safe, preventing diseases, and helping children grow strong. Yet, hand washing is not practiced as consistently or as thoroughly as it should be. Diarrheal disease limits the body’s ability to absorb nutrition from food and is a major cause of death in low resource settings. Hand washing with soap is an effective way to prevent these losses. Global Hand washing Day raises awareness of the importance of hand washing and encourages action to promote and sustain hand washing habits. Organizations and individuals can celebrate Global Hand washing Day by planning an event, participating in a digital campaign, or simply spreading the word about the importance of hand washing. UNICEF Support: Mobilised state and district team in planning & designing of Global Hand wash Day 2018 Facilitated rally, Soap bank and other events related to GHWD at District level. Apart from it, Promotion of soap bank has been demonstrated in Bhadohi and Lakhimpur districts and same is being replicated in many districts State level facilitation in designing IEC, arrangement of resource person for orientation and media promotion of GHWD-2018 40 UNICEF focused Districts has been covered by Divisional coordinators (UNICEF) and 8 NGO partners in Global hand wash day- 2018. Persisting Barriers: The momentum built by the GHWD 2018 campaign will go a long way in making the efforts and impacts on sustainable sanitation but a few challenges which need to be kept in view are: . The basic infrastructures required at the institution level for the hand washing are still missing in many schools. Functional hand-pumps, running water, group hand washing units/washbasins, soap have to be made uniformly available in all schools. . Lack of focus on other age groups for instilling hand washing behaviours restricts the campaign to one segment of the population thus lacking scale and coverage. . Ad-hoc or irregular monthly reporting on hand washing from schools as well as AWCs. . Limited budgets for maintenance of WASH facilities and hand washing
Way Forward: The Global Hand-washing Day should be celebrated like a district/ state wide campaign for promoting messages of safe sanitation behaviours in institutions as well as in the community. In this regard, also ensure that all institutions have separate toilets with hand washing with soap facility catering to the needs for children with special needs. Some recommended actions are- Propagate messages, information about proper hand washing procedures to the mother, children, health care providers and general public through training programmes, print media, electronic media and instructive pamphlets. Ensure the sufficient availability of soap in all the institutions Additionally, ensure monitoring of the practice of hand washing as well as availability of soap
