Yantai is a charming coastal city located in the northeastern Province. It offers a picturesque and romantic seascape, best enjoyed with a glass of the locally produced, internationally recognized ‘Changyu’ wine. The wine culture, delicious seafood and colonial-era western architecture has made Yantai an increasingly popular tourist destination. Penglai, just 65km away, is known as a fairyland on earth, because of its majestic scenery and links with a number of Chinese legends.

Yantai's population as of 2018 is just over 7 million. The average high temperature in the summer is 30°C, while spring and autumn are quite mild. Winters can be quite cold, dipping below 0°C. The total GDP of Yantai surpassed 110 billion USD in 2018.

2 CULTURE

Changyu wine, produced in Yantai, has thrust Yantai onto the world wine stage. Yantai has become as beloved a name to lovers of Chinese wines as is Bordeaux to lovers of French wines.

Since Yantai is located very close to the sea, Yantai’s culture is also deeply tied to the coast. Yantai Hill, in the north of the city proper and surrounded by sea on three sides, houses a large collection of colonial-era Western architecture, including a famous lighthouse you can climb. The buildings have been well preserved, and the park is renowned as a living museum of Western treaty port architecture. 3 HISTORY & NATURAL WONDERS

Penglai has long been a popular tourist destination. There is a whole complex of impressive architecture, so you will need a whole day to explore this mystical place. Penglai Pavilion (Penglaige) is often referred to as a place of the gods in Chinese mythology, thanks to its stunningly beautiful scenery.

For example, the well-known legend of Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea was said to take place here. The Pavilion, about 1000 years’ old, is perched on a cliff top, overlooking the sea. It is considered as one of the four greatest ancient pavilions in . 4 CUISINE

Shandong is known as the hometown of Lu (Shandong) cuisine. Bordered by sea, seafood is naturally in abundance. Therefore, the ingredients of many dishes are seafood based, often consisting of sea-cucumbers, , , crabs and prawns.

Wheat-based dishes are also very popular. For instance, Fushan Noodles and Tiemian-Guobing (baked cake) are both famous dishes. There are also a variety of local snacks, such as the Fish Dumplings, Penglai Noodles, Pansi cake and Yantai Menzi (bean jelly fried with shrimp paste and seasonings). 5 INDUSTRY

Growth - Yantai’s GDP surpassed $110bn in 2018. - It is currently the second largest industrial city in Shandong, next to . - It is also the cradle of Chinese wine production, being home to the largest wine production base in all of Asia.

Business - In 2011 the Port of Yantai signed a strategic alliance with the largest port of the Republic of Korea. - For shipbuilding, Penglai, one of Yantai county’s cities, has become the largest shipbuilding base in Shandong. - At present, there are over 350 automobile and auto parts manufacturers in Yantai.

Industrial Zones - Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone (YEDA) - There is also Yantai Export Processing Zone (YEPZ). - YEDA was one of the earliest approved State level economic development zones in China. - It has received more than 1,500 foreign-financed investments from 78 Fortune 500 companies. - YEDA has fostered two cutting-edge industries in machinofacture and electronic information.

Yantai has four districts: Fushan, Zhifu, Laishan and Muping. The YEDA is located in Fushan .

1. Many expats live in Bihai Yuntai, which is on Huanghe Road. 2. Chanyu Wine Culture Museum, near Yantai harbour is a must-see for all visiting Yantai.

7 ATTRACTIONS

As well as Yantai Hill and Penglai Pavillion, there are many other exciting attractions:

Yantai Gold Beach Golden beach is a great place to go if you want to just relax. The Sheraton, Hilton, and Marriott are located on the west end of the beach away from the crowds.

Longdao Island is located in , which a collection of 32 islands located north of Penglai City. These islands known for their sandy beaches and picturesque limestone cliffs.

Zhulin Temple exterior is a true masterpiece. Each slab/brick has an intricate sculpture depicting Buddhist stories. The large bronze buddha is also very impressive.

Nanshan Tourist Area of Nashan Mountain is located in City’s Lushan Mountain. The area is home to beautiful natural landscapes as well as rich with Buddhist and .

8 TRANSPORT

Metro - Yantai subway is not yet available. Thera are a total of 6 subway lines planned out. According to the plan, the lines 1 and 3 will be put into service before 2022.

Taxi - Depending on the car make, taxis in Yantai are divided into 2 types: ordinary and standard.

- Ordinary taxis will take passengers anywhere in the city with a starting price of 7rmb for the first 3km, 1.5rmb/km between 3-6km, and 2.25rmb/km beyond that.

- Standard taxis have a starting price of 8rmb for the first 3km, 1.8rmb/km between 3-6km, and 2.7rmb/km beyond that.

- Passengers can also use the Didi app, which often offers more affordable rides in better quality cars.

9 BUSES & SHIPS

Public Buses - Yantai has over 50 bus routes. - With no metro, this is a very convenient way of travelling. - There are three types of the buses: big, mini, and air- conditioned. The charge is from CNY1 to CNY1.5.

Sightseeing Buses - Bus No.17 travels the length of the coast (Binhai Road). - Stops include: Changyu Wine Culture Museum, First Bathing Beach and Crescent Bay - Operating hours: 05:30 ~ 21:30/22:30 (winter/summer)

Long Distance Buses - City Coach Bus Terminal is the main station for long distance bus travel (No.86 West Avenue, ) - Tickets can be bought at other bus stations and post offices around the city.

Ship - Many people enjoy taking a boat trip to , Inchon (South Korea) and other coastal cities. - Two stations: Yantai Port Passenger Transport Station and the Huanhai Lu Passenger Transport Station. - Ships to Dalian have 3 categories – ordinary (8H), ro-ro (5.5H) and high-speed (3H). - 3 ships to Inchon in a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). 10 HOUSING

Unfortunately, Yantai does not yet have an International doctors service that specifically offers consultations in English. However, there are still some very reputable hospitals in Yantao, of which Maxxelli recommends:

YEDA is close to the international school, and located in a particularly popular area for expats. YuHuangDing is the largest hospital in Yantai. The hospital provides fapiaos (receipts) that are accepted by foreign insurance companies.

13 NIGHTLIFE

- Yantai’s nightlife has a very unique vibe. It may not have the high energy of a modern metropolis, but the romantic coastline has its own magical charm. - For a culturally immersive experience, go to Haibin (Seashore) Square to see the locals enjoying a stroll after a long day of work. - Popular bars for expats include ‘2056 Bar’ and ‘Red Fox’. - We also recommend any one of the night markets around the city. These are always bustling with noise and excitement, and offer tasty street food.
