MOTIVATE. 2015 -2016 Annual Report Inspiring all Canadians to embrace the joy of skating Chair’s Message Dear Members of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut, The Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section continues to be a leader in the figure skating community. Through our innovative practices and integration of new technologies, we are motivating our members to Skate for Life in the sport that brings them happiness. The Board of Directors remains dedicated to the implementation of the Section’s Strategic Plan 2014-2018. This Plan is focused on moving forward in five Strategic Imperatives – Skate for Life, Skate to Win, Delivery Capacity, Brand and Partnerships. Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut assists clubs with the implementation of the new CanSkate program and has provided additional support through the CanSkate University Program. Through seminars and grants, the Section strives to provide opportunities for Inclusive Skating and Adult Skaters. The Section is committed to the implementation of Skate Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model by providing competitive opportunities for younger skaters via the STAR competition model, in addition to encouraging our athletes to transition along the athlete pathway. The Section was fortunate to host major competitive events in the 2015-2016 season. The Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships were held in Calgary from April 3 to 5, 2015. A very successful Skate Canada International was held in Lethbridge, October 30 to November 1, 2015. Edmonton was the host to the Skate Canada Challenge event from December 2 to 6, 2015 where over 500 skaters participated. We cannot express our gratitude often enough to all of the many volunteers who worked so very hard to provide these quality events. -

Brazil and the Philippines will be represented for the first time in the figure skating event at Olympic Winter Games. The traditional fall event Nebelhorn Trophy was the ISU designated senior international figure skating qualifying competition as it was in 2009. Australia, Israel, Romania, Philippines, Ukraine, Italy earn Olympic spots for Men Athletes from Australia, Israel, Romania, Philippines, Ukraine and Italy earned the six Olympic spots for Men. Japan’s Nobunari Oda took the gold medal followed by Jason Brown (USA) and Jeremy Ten of Canada. Oda led after the Short Program with an excellent performance to “Cotton Club” that included the only quadruple toeloop of the day (87.34 points). The 26-year-old followed up with a quad-triple toeloop combination as well as seven more triple jumps in his Free Skating to “Wilhelm Tell” (175.64 points) and posted a new personal best total score of 262.98 points. “I was very focused on my first quad and when I landed it I felt relieved. -

Overview over the teams Team Russia is the top qualifier for the ISU World Team Trophy with 8517 points followed by the USA (7641 points), Japan (6543 points), Canada (6400 points), France (4993 points) and China (4368 points). The teams ranked 1 to 6 in the ISU World Team Standings qualified for the event. 2015 World Champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva leads team Russia and is joined by 2015 World bronze medalist Elena Radionova, 2015 European Champions Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov, 2015 European silver medalist Maxim Kovtun, 2015 European bronze medalist Sergei Voronov and 2015 Russian Ice Dance Champions Elena Ilinykh/Ruslan Zhiganshin. Alexander Smirnov is the team captain. Team USA is headlined by 2015 World silver medalists Madison Chock/Evan Bates. The team under captain Bates is completed by U.S. Champions Ashley Wagner, Jason Brown, Alexa Scimeca/Chris Knierim as well as Gracie Gold and Max Aaron.
