"Casa del Mar" 4621 Gulf of Mexico Drive Longboat Key, Florida ## TO SARASOTA TO BRADENTON Marine Turtle Information Public Service Announcement Town of LBK

All species of sea turtles in the U.S. are endangered or threatened. The loggerhead turtle is the most common sea turtle that nests in Florida and accounts for 99% of the nests on Longboat Key in 2007 (143 loggerhead and 2 green turtle nests); Longboat Key in one of the first communities in Florida to develop and enforce lighting ordinances that attempted to reduce sea turtle hatchling disorientations.

The sea turtle nesting season covers May through August of each year. Nests of 100-200 eggs the size of ping-pong balls will incubate for an average of 55 to 65 days. Because the incubation period extends 6 to 8 weeks after the nesting period, active enforcement of the Town of Longboat Key’s Ordinance takes place between May though October or until all the nests have hatches.

The female loggerhead matures in about 30 years to return to beaches near where she was born. navigating from her sensing of the earth’s magnetic fields. These turtles migrate great distances and overcome many natural and human-related hazards during migration. Females emerge by night to nest on dark sandy beaches between the nigh tide line and dune front. This is the same area used by day by residents and transient beach-goers. We need to share the beach to allow turtles to nest. Beach chairs, umbrellas, and other portable items that are left on a beach are obstacles that can cause a female to depart without laying her eggs.

Turtle vision is best at underwater swimming in low light situations. When the baby turtles emerge at night, they travel toward a brightest horizon, which on a dark beach would lead them reliably to sea. However, any bright lights that are visible from the beach can overwhelm this sensitive night vision. Bright artificial lights that are visible from the beach can overwhelm this wrong way toward exterior lights or interior lights from condos or hotels, single-family residences or street lights. In 2007, 37% of turtle nests on Longboat Key had a disorientation event. The causes included lights from hotels or condos, single family residences, sky glow and parking lots. These disorientations resulted in a loss of 1327 baby turtles. With odds of 1 in 1000 for returning to nest, simple measures to reduce light pollution would insure that one more turtle might make it to return to nest on Longboat Key in 2037. Florida’s loggerhead population has declined by 40% in the last decade, so everyone can help by:  Removing beach furniture or obstacles from the nesting area.  Turn off, shield or redirect lights during nesting season.  Close blinds or drapes over beach facing windows at night.  Use your natural vision while on the beach at night instead of flashlights.  If you meet a turtle on the beach at night, remain quiet and still until she leaves.  Do not disturb tracks made by a turtles. Researchers use the tracks to ID the species.
