It’s always exciting to write, most of all about the Shots – I have improved greatly since last time out. Being encouraged by several personnel and supporters alike, that was the first step to an improvement in my writing and overall, how I approach different projects. I must therefore thank (not least using the Role of Thanks on the following page), but here and for most in advance; here. I have been supporting the Shots for roughly nine years now – I know it’s a short time but I cannot describe my passion and love for Aldershot Town Football Club.

The Speedway Researcher ‘Tiger’ Stevenson was another rider trained in 1929 at West Ham. He went there as a novice, Jimmy loaned him a machine, Sprouts Elder trained him to stardom. Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing In 1928 Jimmy could see that speedway racing was not going to last as a ‘Circus’ and searched hard for the answer. One day while reading the Volume No.8 No. 3 December 2005 football results, he thought, ‘why not a speedway league’. He got Edited by Graham Fraser and Jim Henry cracking and worked out the sequence of arranging heats, etc. The first ‘try out’ match he staged at Southampton, between his own teams, Any Colour as Long as it’s White! Southampton and West Ham. The other promoters did not think much of the idea, and could not be bothered to go and see the result. The After years of different coloured papers for our covers we have been Press, however, were so impressed that, when he staged the return forced to adopt the negative image of Henry Ford. For some strange match at West Ham, they all went along! The crowd were ‘on their reason it is no longer possible to purchase 90 grams per square metre feet’ for the first time, Jimmy was invited to form a league and league paper in colour but we can buy it in white. Unless anyone out there can racing was born. Later in the same year, he had another idea. ‘Why not help with reasonably priced 90gsm paper that is – the trouble is we use an England v Australia Test Match’ This he tried out later in 1929.

  • Volume 13 No.2 September 2010 Edition No.50
The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 13 No.2 September 2010 Edition No.50 We’ve Made It Don’t want to make a big song and dance but we are 50 editions old at long last. It seems like only yesterday since we published the manifesto edition which set our stall for possible future editions. After moaning about the lack of a magazine like The Speedway Researcher we decided to see how our efforts would be received. We got a favourable response and then got on with producing more editions with loads of information which needed to be shared. There are loads of highlights and a few downers as we see loyal contributors and subscribers pass away. We’ve made a lot of long distance friendships and spent a lot of time helping fellow researchers track down that vital bit of information. It is particularly heartening to see the number of authors who have acknowledged the magazine. The web has added a new dimension to what we can do and has made so much information available to so many. It can only grow and expand but only as an adjunct to the magazine. We will continue to put back numbers on to the web site and let others share in the fruits of the efforts. We suspect very few magazines have been so open with their back numbers. So, we’d like to say thanks to everyone who has contributed and subscribed over the years. Without out your support we probably would have fizzled out a long time ago.

Speedway reports often found its way into papers published well away from the track site. County wide newspaper titles often featured speedway if the town was within its circulation area. It is also worth checking in the press Edited by Graham Fraser & Jim Henry for nearby towns. For example a newspaper published in Hamilton carried details Volume No. 1 No.3 December 1998 and an action photograph of activity at Motherwell in 1932. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Sometimes it is worth looking in the newspapers from the home town of to all our subscribers (76) as we publish Vol.1 No.3. visiting teams. In the pre war era some newspapers carried details of their team on their travels. An example is the Newcastle newspaper whic h carried details of the Newcastle team’s matches at Middlesbrough. You never know what is there WHERE DO I GET THE INFORMATION ? until you actually look. Good hunting. As they say in the X Files - The truth is out there. • The Evolving Vision of the Olympic Legacy: the Development of the Mixed-Use Olympic Parks of Sydney and London

The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 92,019 words. I can confirm that my thesis was copy edited for conventions of language, spelling and grammar by James Disley. 2 Abstract In the long history of Olympic urbanisation, the creation of an “Olympic Park” where various Olympic facilities are concentrated has been favoured by both host cities and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), due to the regenerative opportunity it presents and its management advantages during the Games.
