They also manage their armies- comprising of troops infantrymen who fight on foot, cavalrymen who fight on horseback, charioteers who fight using horse-drawn chariots, artillerymen who use long-ranged artillery, and sailors and marines who fight using wooden ships- through actions such as recruitment, collection of food and supplies, and training exercises to ensure that their soldiers are well-trained, well-fed, well-armed, and well-supplied.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 22. Last
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 22. Last time, Zhang Fei just couldn’t help himself and decided to poke Lü Bu with a stick again by stealing some horses that his men had just purchased. Lü Bu responded by bringing an army to Xiaopei, where Liu Bei was based, to dish out some payback. And imagine Liu Bei’s surprise when he rode out to ask why Lü Bu was there and found out for the first time what Zhang Fei had done. Zhang Fei then precluded any possibility of a peaceful settlement by hurling more insults at Lu Bu and dragging up the old grudge of Lu Bu stealing his brother’s province. The war of words quickly escalated and Lu Bu ordered his army to surround the hamlet. Inside the city, after he chewed Zhang Fei out, Liu Bei sent a messenger to Lu Bu’s camp to say that he would return all the stolen horses if Lu Bu would call of his attack. Lu Bu was leaning toward accepting this peace offering, but his adviser Chen Gong was against it. “If you don’t kill Liu Bei now, he will definitely do you harm down the road,” Chen Gong said. So Lu Bu changed his mind and rejected the truce. So now what was Liu Bei going to do? He gathered his staff to figure that out, and one of his advisers, Sun Qian (2), offered up an idea out of left field. “Cao Cao hates Lu Bu more than anyone else,” Sun Qian said.

The Transformations of Messianic Revolt and the Founding of the Ming Dynasty JOHN W. DARDESS N 1368, after seventeen years of civil war, the recently established native Ming I Dynasty of Chu Yuan-chang at last forced the heirs of Genghis Khan and their Yuan Dynasty from the dragon throne of China. The Yuan emperor and some rem- nants of the Yuan imperial establishment abandoned Ta-tu (Peking) during the night of September 10, and reached the pillaged summer capital of Shang-tu on September 27, after a disconsolate and rain-soaked journey.1 Further harassment by Ming forces at length compelled the Yuan court to withdraw from Shang-tu and retreat further north to Ying-ch'ang, which it reached on July 23, 1369.2 The Yuan emperor, after a reign of thirty-six years, died on May 23, 1370, a few weeks before Ming troops suc- ceeded in taking Ying-ch'ang.3 For some years thereafter the Yiian, in spite of its retreat to Mongolia, continued to consider itself the legitimate reigning dynasty in China.

  • Yang Obeys, but the Yin Ignores: Copyright Law and Speech Suppression in the People's Republic of China
THE YANG OBEYS, BUT THE YIN IGNORES: COPYRIGHT LAW AND SPEECH SUPPRESSION IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA Stephen McIntyret ABSTRACT Copyright law can either promote or restrict free speech: while copyright preserves economic incentives to create and pub- lish new expression, it also fences off expression from public use. For this reason, the effect of copyright law on speech in a given country depends on the particular manner in which it is under- stood, legislated, and enforced. This Article argues that copyright law in the People's Repub- lic of China (PRC) serves as a tool for speech suppression and censorship. Whereas China has engaged in official censorship for thousands of years, there has historically been little appreciation for proprietary rights in art and literature. Just as China's early twentieth century attempts to recognize copyright overlapped with strict publication controls, the PRC's modern copyright regime embodies the view that copyright is a mechanism for policing speech and media. The decade-long debate that preceded the PRC's first copy- right statute was shaped by misunderstanding, politics, ideology, and historicalforces. Scholars and lawmakers widely advocated that Chinese copyright law discriminate based on media content and carefully circumscribe authors' rights. These concerns, intensi- fied by the Tiananmen Square crackdown, bore directly on the t J.D., Duke University School of Law; M.A., East Asian Studies, Duke Uni- versity; B.A., Chinese, Brigham Young University. I would like to thank Jennifer Jenkins for her invaluable guidance, suggestions, and support throughout the re- search and writing process; this Article could not have come to fruition without her help.

Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 17. Last time, we left off with Cao Cao riding high. He had whipped some overmatched Yellow Turban rebels and chased Lu Bu off his turf. On top of that, while beating Lu Bu and his masters, Cao Cao managed to acquire some new territory. He now controlled much of the Shandong region. He reported his victories to the court, because he was, of course, doing all that for the glory of the empire, and the court rewarded him with a fancy generalship and named him the Lord of Feiting (4,2).
