WALL BOY WALL BOY is a sensitive account of the issues facing vulnerable young people in contemporary Australian society. The film is both unsettling and brave in its dramatisation of the fractured world of a vulnerable adolescent. Some students may find the references to sex and drugs too confronting and the dimensions of the narrative too upsetting. This study guide accompanies the short fiction film WALL BOY by Shark Island Productions, makers of THE OASIS documentary. It has been written for senior secondary students and practitioners, and provides information and suggestions for learning activities in English, Drama, Health and Human Development, Media, Religion and Society, VCE VET Community Services and curriculum projects exploring social justice issues in contemporary Australian society. WALL BOY could also be shown to teachers as part of professional development sessions addressing student welfare and pastoral care. Some of the questions and activities in this study guide will be of use to organisations, community groups and counselling services that support vulnerable young people. WALL BOY is the story of a vulnerable sixteen- year-old boy forced to work as a male sex worker at a notorious spot in inner city Sydney called The Wall. A youth worker from the Salvation Army’s outreach bus tries to reach out to him, but the © ATOM SCREEN EDUCATION boy won’t speak or even make eye contact. -

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION This Project Summary represents a snapshot of the Australia’s Homeless • Every night 22,000 teenagers are Youth Project 2008, a collaboration between: homeless - twice the number The National Youth Commission (NYC), the first national independent inquiry into youth homelessness since the Burdekin Inquiry in 1989. This resource was born out of the popularity of THE OASIS documentary and accompanying study guide in schools. THE OASIS follows Captain Paul Moulds from the Oasis Youth Service in his day to day work with young homeless people in Sydney, Australia. This raw observational documentary filmed over two years, is a tribute to the power of one man’s persistence in the face of seemingly unrelenting darkness. As time unfolds, some of the youth pull themselves out of misfortune and aspire to greater things, while others sink deeper into addiction and desperation. -

ABSTRACT Rita McGrath suggests that management needs to shift into a new era- the era of empathy and she has challenged scholars to put all of the questions about management back on the table so that the search for answers could begin as soon as possible. This paper argues that many of the answers may lie in the work of the complexity and cognitive sciences over the last fifty years and supports her contention that management should be moving into an era of empathy. Cate Blanchett’s comments about her approach to character in her acting and to her approach to management while Co-Artistic Director and CEO of Sydney Theatre Company suggest an instinctive alignment with those approaches. INTRODUCTION Professor Rita McGrath has called for a new era of management to supersede the eras of efficiency and expertise that have characterised management practice and education from the Industrial Revolution to the present day (McGrath, 2014). The wide-spread criticism of the persistent business as a machine metaphor and its promotion of inequality, profits only for shareholders over a broader set of stakeholders at the expense of employees/ customers must be urgently addressed. -
