DIRECTOR’S NOTE “A long time ago, when 9 and 11 were just 2 odd numbers, I lived above a fire house on 18th and Broadway. Between the yin and yang of the great Barnes and Noble book store and the ultimate sports emporium, Paragon, around the corner from Warhol’s last studio, 3 floors above, overlooking Union Square. Our local bar was a gothic church made over into a rock and roll nightmare called The Limelite. The club was run by a gang of modern day pirates with Nicky D its patron saint. For whatever reason, the neighborhood became a haven for topless clubs. The names changed with the seasons but the core crews didn't. Decked out in tuxes and razor haircuts, they manned the velvet ropes that separated the outside from the in, 100%. -

La Biennale di Venezia / 77th Venice International Film Festival American director Abel Ferrara awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2020 prize His new film Sportin’ Life to be presented Out of Competition La Biennale di Venezia and Jaeger-LeCoultre are pleased to announce that the American director Abel Ferrara (Pasolini, Bad Lieutenant, King of New York) is the recipient of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award of the 77th Venice International Film Festival (September 2 - 12, 2020), dedicated to a personality who has made a particularly original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema. The award ceremony for Abel Ferrara will take place on Saturday September 5th 2020 in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) at 2 pm, before the screening Out of Competition of his new film, the documentary Sportin’ Life (Italy, 65') with Abel Ferrara, Willem Dafoe, Cristina Chiriac, Anna Ferrara, Paul Hipp, Joe Delia. A La Sombra Del Latin Lover: Antonio Moreno En El Cine De Hollywood De Los Años Veinte
Rocío ALCALA DEL OLMO OLEA Universitat de Valencia, España A LA SOMBRA DEL LATIN LOVER: ANTONIO MORENO EN EL CINE DE HOLLYWOOD DE LOS AÑOS VEINTE. EL CASO DE THE 1 TEMPTRESS (FRED NIBLO, 1926) L’objet de cet article est l’étude du discours sexuel et ethnique qui a sous-tendu l’image de la star de cinéma Antonio Moreno, durant son passage à Hollywood. S’ajustant au stéréotype du latin lover, initié par Rodolfo Valentino, l’image de la star a fonctionné à l’écran et dans la vie, comme image de mobilité sexuelle dont l’ambivalence (séducteur/séduit, sujet/objet de désir) permettait de promouvoir la réconciliation entre les valeurs anciennes et les valeurs nouvelles qui émergeaient dans la société nord- américaine des années vingt. De même, sa condition de star hispanique fut soutenue par l’industrie hollywoodienne pour diffuser un discours ethnique ambivalent, dans lequel coexistaient rejet et fascination. L’image de la star représentait donc un autre « idéal » qui symbolisait l’idéal de la réussite américaine dans la mesure où il pouvait s’incorporer à la culture « blanche », tout en restant un « autre », considéré comme ‘hot blooded’. En ce sens, l’étude des textes qui élaborent l’image publique de l’acteur (affiches, publicité, revues de fanzines, etc.) et l’analyse filmique de The Temptress (Fred Niblo, 1926) permettent d’étudier la manière dont le latin lover Antonio Moreno a représenté un stéréotype sexuel et ethnique qui a contribué à définir l’imaginaire culturel de la société nord-américaine. Synopsis One day, one life. Rome, the night of November 2nd 1975, the great Italian poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini is murdered. Pasolini is the symbol of an art that’s fighting against power. His writings are scandalous, his films are persecuted by the censors, many people love him and many hate him. The day of his death, Pasolini spends his last hours with his beloved mother and later on, with his dearest friends, before finally going out into the night in his Alfa Romeo in search of adventure in the Eternal City. At dawn, Pasolini is found dead on a beach in Ostia on the outskirts of the city. In a film dreamlike and visionary, a blend of reality and imagination, Abel Ferrara reconstructs the last day in the life of this great poet with frequent collaborator Willem Dafoe as Pier Paolo Pasolini.
