Iconic species project

Wollemi Wollemia nobilis

Conservation status Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (NSW): Endangered Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (): Endangered IUCN: Listed as Critically Endangered (Global Status: IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 2013.1 list) NSW recovery plan The Recovery plan for the Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis) (NSW Department of Environment and Conservation 2006) was developed to help conserve this ancient species for future generations to enjoy and experience. The recovery plan objectives are to: •• protect known stands from threats •• support the commercial release of Wollemi •• maintain and representative off-site populations in botanic gardens •• continue implementing an education and awareness program. Actions being undertaken in 2014–15 under Saving our Species •• Disease control •• Testing non-injurious techniques to help affected by Phytophthora dieback to defend themselves •• Monitoring plant health in the wild population. •• Surveillance of the wild population to reduce impacts from unauthorised visitation by people. •• Managing potential impacts from fire, pest animals and weeds. •• Maintaining an ex situ collection as a back-up for the wild population and for research. Actions already under way •• Worldwide distribution and availability of Wollemi pine . •• Implementing phytosanitary controls to reduce the risk of dieback disease spreading. •• Experimental translocations to various environments to find out which environments most benefit the pine. •• Researching factors inhibiting growth of new plants in the wild population. •• Researching population dynamics and the impacts from fire and drought. •• Ongoing monitoring and surveillance. •• Community education and awareness.
