THE SPARTAN TIMES Seniors Spend Time at Local Animal Shelter by Christina Rasmussen First Edition February 5, 2016 THE SPARTAN TIMES Seniors Spend Time at Local Animal Shelter By Christina Rasmussen An average of 28% of high school students between the ages Te a c h e rs a n d T h e i r of 16-18 spend their time volunteering. Whether that be at a Cars local nursing home, soup kitchen, or animal shelter, a portion of high schoolers do volunteer in their local community. At SMH, there isn’t a required number of community service hours, but seniors Sarah Stueve, Olivia Bromery, Erin Mahar, and Sophia Kerrins can be found volunteering at the Northeast Animal Shelter, located at 347 Highland Avenue, in Salem, MA. All of the girls volunteer weekly and can be found walking the dogs and playing with them in the play yards. When animals get adopted, they clean their cages so they’re ready for the next animal to live in. They also clean up after the dogs and refill their water bowls. If it’s too busy or cold then they don’t go outside as much, but they always make time to play with them in their cages. If all of the dogs have been taken care of, the girls will help with laundry or cutting up towels into smaller sizes for cage cleaning. Can you guess who's car this is? • A Little Chaos Alan Rickman Has Had a Notable Film Career for the Last 25
A Little Chaos Alan Rickman has had a notable film career for the last 25 years, ever since he played the Euro-snide villain in the original “Die Hard” (1989). In that span, he has directed one film, “The Winter Guest,” starring Emma Thompson, in 1997. “A Little Chaos” is his second directorial effort, a careful and delicate period piece. The date is 1682 and the place is the France of Louis XIV. The King (Rickman) desires new landscaping at Versailles and hires landscaper André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) for the job. He, in turn, hires as a contractor the creative but nonconformist gardener Sabine de Berra (Kate Winslet), a working widow who looks to upend standard garden traditions, to create an outdoor theater-fountain on the grounds. After some difficulties, she retains a competent crew headed by Duras (Steven Waddington) and earns the respect of the King’s brother Duc Phillippe d’Orleans (Stanley Tucci). She also begins to fall for Andre. Andre is estranged from his haughty wife, Madame Françoise (Helen McCrory) who resents Sabine and conspires to ruin her by using hirelings to completely flood her project while it’s under construction. The project is resuscitated however, and a chance meeting of Sabine and the King at a garden supply site bonds the monarch and the commoner together. Her relationship with the King further solidifies, her troubled past is overcome, Françoise is finally unmasked, and Sabine and André find love as her project reaches completion. This is historical fiction written by one Allison Deegan, with few pretensions to actual events (de Berra is completely made up).

  • Front Cover C
ISLE OF WIGHT GARDENS TRUST SPRING NEWSLETTER 2016 SIGNIFICANCEHIGHLIGHTS AND FROM INSPIRATION 2014 We are grateful to Mr Lee Hawkes for use of a photograph of his original pencil drawing by George Brannon (1784-1860) as the illustration on the front cover of this newsletter. The scene has particular significance for Lee who grew up in Godshill and has happy memories of climbing up to the Obelisk for summer picnics, and also for some members of IWGT who made the climb in 2009. As far as we have been able to establish, none of Brannon’s engravings reproduced this composition in its entirety. The drawing shows the Appuldurcombe eye-catchers of Cook’s Castle and the Worsley Obelisk above the house in its parkland setting. Within the park there are some figures and a number of individual young trees protected from the grazing deer by tree guards. On the skyline, to the left of the Obelisk, there is the private signal station, belonging to Appuldurcombe, with a small hut for its attendants. The drawing is not dated, but is thought to have been done in the 1820s. On the far right, the sea with some small boats and Highdown Cliff below Tennyson Down are drawn faintly in the distance. The artist’s viewpoint for the drawing is hard to establish but, as Brannon noted in the preface of the 1824 edition of his Vectis Scenery, he sometimes needed to find an ‘awkward station’ which might be the arms of a tree. The relationship of the elements within the composition also seem to be the subject of some artistic licence.

Representing Henry’s Royal Palace: The Relationship between Film, Television and Hampton Court Palace Llewella Chapman Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia, School of Art, Media and American Studies July 2017 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between the heritage industry on the one hand, and the film and television industries on the other. It will argue that a hierarchy of heritage sites exists in the United Kingdom, which, depending on a site’s placement within this hierarchy, determines how a site engages with film and television. Furthermore, this thesis argues that there are three main ways in which heritage sites can engage with film and television: firstly, by allowing film and television productions to make use of a site; secondly through using film and television as part of a site’s interpretation strategy; and finally, by using film and television as part of a site’s marketing strategy. As a case study, this thesis focuses on Hampton Court Palace, a site maintained by Historic Royal Palaces. There is evidence to suggest that this organisation places itself highly within the hierarchy, and therefore this thesis will analyse the ways that it engages with film and television at Hampton Court Palace.
