  • Call the Midwife Is a Moving and Intimate Insight Into the Colourful World of Midwifery and Family Life in 1950’S East London
A Neal Street Production for BBC One Starring Jessica Raine with Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt Based on the best-selling memoirs by Jennifer Worth and dramatised by Heidi Thomas Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate insight into the colourful world of midwifery and family life in 1950’s East London. We are introduced to the community through the eyes of young nurse Jenny Lee as she arrives at Nonnatus House to live and work as a midwife alongside an Order of Nuns. As Jenny comes to terms with her new life, we meet some phenomenal people who prove that their warmth, resilience and determination are to be admired beyond measure. At the heart of this world are the Sisters of St Raymond Nonnatus who have been active in the East End as Anglican nursing nuns since the beginning of the 20th century. The Sisters and the midwives of Nonnatus House carry out many nursing duties across the community. However, with between 80 and 100 babies being born each month in Poplar alone, their primary work is to help bring safe childbirth to women in the area and to look after their countless newborns. The series was commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One, and Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama. It was adapted with the blessing and guidance of Jennifer Worth, who worked closely with Neal Street Productions and screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs, Cranford) up until she passed away shortly before filming began in the summer of 2011. Starring newcomer Jessica Raine as Jenny, the cast includes Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt.

  • You’Re Able to Give a Little Bit of the Outside World to a Group of People That Don’T Have It'
‘You’re able to give a little bit of the outside world to a group of people that don’t have it' Jenny Agutter has had an incredibly varied acting career, from initial fame in The Railway Children and her BAFTA winning performance in Equus, to her ongoing role as Sister Julienne in Call the Midwife and appearances in two films of the Avengers franchise. Since returning to the UK in 1992, she has been patron and ambassador for an increasing number of charities and dedicated her 2012 OBE to all those organisations that she worked with. Jenny has two main strands to her charitable work. Close family members’ illness and disability led her to become an ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and later, a patron of Graeae, a theatre company led by people with disabilities. The second strand follows her passionate desire to help the forgotten people in society, strengthening the bonds of family and community through her support as patron and ambassador for St Giles’ Trust and Action for Children respectively. By working with charities to solve the root problems behind mental illness, incarceration and homelessness, Jenny seeks to give opportunities to those with fewer life choices. She is now continuing this work as an ambassador for Liberty Choir. We spoke to her about her experiences of the charity. Why do you support Liberty Choir? Liberty Choir is a very practical organisation. People are sharing the same sounds, the same music and they’re finding a way of singing together. Those who join the choir, often go on to join the choir outside of prison, so they begin to be part of a community.

  • A Little Chaos Alan Rickman Has Had a Notable Film Career for the Last 25
A Little Chaos Alan Rickman has had a notable film career for the last 25 years, ever since he played the Euro-snide villain in the original “Die Hard” (1989). In that span, he has directed one film, “The Winter Guest,” starring Emma Thompson, in 1997. “A Little Chaos” is his second directorial effort, a careful and delicate period piece. The date is 1682 and the place is the France of Louis XIV. The King (Rickman) desires new landscaping at Versailles and hires landscaper André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) for the job. He, in turn, hires as a contractor the creative but nonconformist gardener Sabine de Berra (Kate Winslet), a working widow who looks to upend standard garden traditions, to create an outdoor theater-fountain on the grounds. After some difficulties, she retains a competent crew headed by Duras (Steven Waddington) and earns the respect of the King’s brother Duc Phillippe d’Orleans (Stanley Tucci). She also begins to fall for Andre. Andre is estranged from his haughty wife, Madame Françoise (Helen McCrory) who resents Sabine and conspires to ruin her by using hirelings to completely flood her project while it’s under construction. The project is resuscitated however, and a chance meeting of Sabine and the King at a garden supply site bonds the monarch and the commoner together. Her relationship with the King further solidifies, her troubled past is overcome, Françoise is finally unmasked, and Sabine and André find love as her project reaches completion. This is historical fiction written by one Allison Deegan, with few pretensions to actual events (de Berra is completely made up).

  • The Railway Children BBC 1968
The Railway children BBC 1968 For all the family to enjoy, this is a magical rendering of this classic tale. The settings in the Worth Valley in West Yorkshire are beautiful and this was filmed on an embryonic private enthusiast preserved railway just at the time when steam trains had disappeared from our everyday lives. All the main characters are cast very well and who can resist Jenny Agutter in one of her early roles. You would have to be very cold-hearted not to hold back a tear or a big lump in your throat at the climax to the story, and the ending scene over the closing titles says it all. The cast and producers really did enjoy making this one and it stands the test of time. There are no shoot-outs, mass explosions or wild car chases, just honest loving relationships evolving around hard and troubled times. The recent ITV remake was good but doesn't capture the honest emotions and simple sincerity of life in less materialistic times. Go on get it for the family if you have never seen it and even better still, visit Haworth, Oakworth and the Worth Valley and you can still sample the set today! don't remember, watching this in 1968, the children continually looking off set for their cues or the occasional clumsy improvisation but these things just add to the naive beauty of this (apparently) live production which for me was never upstaged by the slicker 1970 film version, though I feel I have to compare the two.
