Film Hire Charges

Most films in this Menu have no minimum guarantee charge. This means you pay us 35% of your box office regardless of how big or small. However certain films of high quality attract very few bookings across our network. This means that we have to ensure that any minimum charges imposed upon us by film distributors are covered by the likely return from you. These films have the designation *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 in the Menu. The 35% or £50 minimum both include VAT.

If you wish to book a film NOT on the Menu, this will be a special one-off booking for you and will be charged the usual 35% or the minimum guarantee levied by the film distributor (usually in a range from £85 to £120), whichever is the larger. VAT is charged on these special bookings.

No Nasty Surprises When you book your films from Moviola, I send you a Confirmation Form on which the level of charge for each film is clearly set out. You should read this carefully before replying to me that it is correct. The confirmation is our agreement to supply films for you for the season and we refer back to it in any case of a query on your invoice – so read it and keep it safe!

PROGRAMMING GUIDE I hope you will agree that, once again, this is an incredibly strong Menu. When I wrote the summer notes, I did warn you that there would be so many new films that the autumn decision making would be hard. If you currently do only three shows in the September to December period, do consider putting in some more, just to let your audiences enjoy some of these treats. Please don’t ask for films from the last Menu. If you do that, you are always going to be behind on the new films which your audiences will want to see. To help you choose, here are my tips for the autumn.

INTRODUCTION PAGE 8

When I select films for you, I do so on the basis that every film has some merit or quality. I know how precious our film screening slots are so films always have to be worthy of inclusion. Of course films vary in subject matter. It should never be the films WE want to see but the ones that will appeal to our ‘customers’, and maybe too will expand their experience and introduce them to new sorts of films.

Try to form your own judgement and not be too coloured by comments from critics or on line. On this menu, I have in every case put the www.imdb.com reference for the films. This will give you access to a great deal more information on the films and also film websites and photo galleries where you can find material which you can use free of copyright for promoting the films.

As I’ve said above, I do not envy you the task of selecting a handful of these fine films for your audience. Everyone’s time is limited and of course we rely on the hard work of volunteers to keep our community cinemas going. Organising additional shows takes time and money. However a number of our venues have taken the bold step of doing just that. Crowcombe in Somerset and Fordingbridge in Hampshire (to name just two) run a parallel series of more challenging, more unusual films in between their major monthly attractions. i.e. they are using our ‘Cinematheque’ idea to promote a complementary programme and thus attract new people to their shows who might not otherwise have come. With the financial support we have been able to lever for you from the British Film Institute (which is ring-fenced for British and ‘independent’ films), these new programmes are proving successful and viable with audiences well into the 40s and often larger.

Why not have a go yourselves?

I do hope you approve of the Menu and enjoy reading the notes and watching the accompanying DVD.

Phill Walkley Moviola Programme Director June 2015

THE AGE OF ADALINE (12A) 112 mins Romantic Drama Cinema release 8 May DVD release unknown Available October A delightful romantic drama with a time travel twist which will appeal to all ages. Adaline, born at the beginning of the 20th century, is rendered ageless after an accident. She leads a solitary existence, afraid to commit to anyone and thus reveal her secret. A chance meeting leads to a weekend where she is reunited with an old flame. A very well written film which, although rooted in fantasy, has emotions grounded in reality. Very well acted by Blake Lively, in the lead role, and with strong support from Ellen Burstyn and Harrison Ford. A considerable box office hit and highly recommended. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1655441/?ref_=nv_sr_1

A LITTLE CHAOS A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (12A) 117 mins Period Drama Cinema release 17 April DVD release 24 August Available September A spirited costume drama set at Versailles in the reign of King Louis XIV with as the famous “sun king” and also directing the movie. Louis’ garden designer () recruits strong-willed widow Sabine De Barra () to help him build a lavish outdoor ballroom of sorts. Highly enjoyable and totally charming, this is a film of wide appeal – and you could target the myriad of local gardeners just as they are putting their own confections to bed for the winter. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2639254/?ref_=nv_sr_1

AMY A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 128mins Biography Cinema release 3 July DVD release unknown Available at once. A very, very powerful biography indeed from Asif Kapadia, the maker of “Senna”. The formidable talent of Amy Winehouse is laid out for us to see – because in the cool light of retrospect she was a great performer. The film uses a huge amount of footage to tell her story, from the early home video stuff from her difficult childhood through to the glory days. But it is the fragile and self-deprecating personality of the girl that shines through. The final scenes are overwhelming, reducing many of its Cannes premiere audience to tears. And the strength of this great film is to make clear to us the role played in her downfall by a frenzied and ever hungry media which kept on wanting more. This is a tragedy and the film shows us exactly what the world lost when her life ended. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2870648/?ref_=nv_sr_2

A ROYAL NIGHT OUT (12A) 97mins Light Drama Cinema release 15 May DVD release unknown Available October. Loosely based on a legend, this gentle romantic drama depicts the evening of VE day, when Britain’s two princesses escaped the palace and met the people. Hardly a film that will change history but enormously enjoyable and with big appeal to our core audience. Rupert Everett and Emily Watson have a great time as the King and Queen but it is the exquisitely sensitive, almost porcelain depiction of Princess Elizabeth by Canadian actress Sarah Gadon which steals the picture. Moviola is also privileged to have a special link with the film: Its writer Trevor de Silva is an old student of Phill’s – and he might be persuaded to come along and introduce your show. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1837562/?ref_=nv_sr_1

BILL (PG) 94mins Children’s History Cinema release 21 August DVD release unknown Available December. From the horrible histories series of books and films, an irreverent look at the early life of W. Shakespeare, suitable for over 11s (but probably not adults!). The film has followed an odd course. It was due out at the end of March – but now it is listed for August. No reviews to go on. Silly trailer but it seems that everyone had a grand old time making it – and there is a very loveable Philip ll of Spain! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2978576/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_2

BLACK COAL THIN ICE A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 110mins Thriller Cinema release 6 July DVD available Available at once. From the ridiculous (‘Bill’) to the sublime, a truly amazing thriller from China, one definitely not for the faint hearted but most certainly FOR anyone who loves great, spirited and creative film making. Very much in the genre of all those great ‘film noirs’ with a failed detective and a mysterious dame confronted by a baffling crime. Fabulous because it gives us a glimpse of a place and a society which for many of us is alien and because it is another proof (if any were needed) that Chinese cinema is a force to be reckoned with. Winner of many awards including Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3469910/?ref_=nv_sr_1

CHILD 44 (15) 137 mins Cinema release 17 April DVD release 26 August Available at once. Just when you long for a good thriller, three or four come along at once. More below, one above and now this - a powerful, brooding adaptation of Tom Rob Smith’s best seller. Tom Hardy plays a war hero with a now tarnished record as a KGB agent who defies authorities in Stalin’s post war USSR by refusing to give up the search for a serial killer. Great cast includes Noomi Rapace (the girl with the dragon tattoo) as his wife, Charles Dance, Gary Oldman and Vincent Cassel. A film which grows in power as its story unfolds. Like the Chinese film above, a depiction of a society in which we are so lucky NOT to live – desperately unjust, fearful times where humanity struggles to survive. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014763/?ref_=nv_sr_1

CINDERELLA (U) 109 mins Fairytale romance. Cinema release 27 March. DVD release likely August. Available at once. Kenneth Branagh directs big-money Disney re-telling with some super ‘turns’ such as Cate Blanchett’s wicked stepmother (as one reviewer summed it: “Bette David does Cruella De Vil) and Helena Bonham Carter’s fizzy fairy Godmother. Lily James is excellent as Cinderella. However it is the visuals - fabulous costumes and colour palette - which really stand out. A really super film that appeals to all ages. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1661199/?ref_=nv_sr_1

DANNY COLLINS (15) 106mins Drama Cinema release 29 May DVD release Available at once. Al Pacino’s best role for many years as a fading rock star from the 1970s who soldiers on but harbours huge doubts about the value of his life, never more so than when his octogenarian manager (Christopher Plummer) produces a letter written to him by John Lennon, but never delivered, which might have changed his life. Add to that a sub plot involving an estranged son and a sparkling thread of banter between Collins and Annette Bening’s feisty hotel manager and you have a deeply enjoyable and often moving film. It feels all the more authentic of course because Pacino, one of the screen’s huge talents, experienced exactly the same kind of adoration, and in the same time period, as his character in this excellent film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1772288/?ref_=nv_sr_1

DARK HORSE A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (PG) 85 mins Equestrian documentary. Cinema release 17 April. DVD release 10 August Available at once A rags-to-riches story about the racehorse Dream Alliance who was trained (and became the soul of) a small Welsh mining community, depressed after the closure of the Pit. (Can you believe it is a village right next to Phill’s home village!) It is hard to overestimate the popular appeal of this little film. It has had audiences from Wales to Robert Redford’s Sundance Festival cheering on their feet. Our Mandy, Associate at Capel in Surrey reported on her May show: “Everybody absolutely loved it.” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4137902/?ref_=nv_sr_4

ELSA AND FRED (12A) 90 mins Romance. Cinema release : Unknown DVD available Available at once Based on international Argentine hit and directed by UK’s Michael Radford, this heart-warming and very enjoyable story of old-age love is enlivened by two great ‘troupers’ of the screen at their best. Plummer plays a crotchety 80 year old who feels his life is over until he meets his neighbour Elsa – who just refuses to give up. If I tell you that the climax takes places in the Trevi Fountain, you will know what to expect. Excellent supporting cast but it is old troupers Plummer and Maclaine that one remembers. Their on-screen rapport is a marvel to watch. These are great actors who know exactly what they are doing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2113659/?ref_=nv_sr_2

THE FALLING A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 102mins Drama/Thriller Cinema release 24 April DVD release 24 August Available at once. A drama set in 1969 in an English girls school beset by a mysterious falling sickness, in fact an allegory of emerging female sexuality. If that sounds off-putting, don't let it be. This is a beautifully made and acted British drama by Carol Morley. Excellent performances throughout, especially Florence Pugh and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as two of the girls. Also with Maxine Peake as a mother and a show stopping Monica Dolan as the headmistress (“a cross between Elizabeth Taylor and Margaret Thatcher”). A terrific film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3294200/?ref_=nv_sr_1

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (12A) 115 mins Cinema release 1 May DVD release 31 August Available September The new version of Hardy’s Wessex romance by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, with Carey Mulligan excellent as Bathsheba, Michael Sheen as landowner William Boldwood, Matthias Schoenaerts (again) as Gabriel Oak and Tom Sturridge as Sgt. Troy. Ravishing photography of real Dorset landscapes (several Moviola villages provided extras) “buffed free of grit, danger and the sweat and dirt of outdoor toil” (as one reviewer put it). A very big summer time hit and will appeal to Moviola’s core audience. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2935476/?ref_=nv_sr_1

FORCE MAJEURE A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 120mins Cinema release 10 April DVD release 29 June Available at once A knock-out hit with art house and independent cinema audiences, with the film often being held over for further weeks. It is a rare comedy that with a few tweaks could become a heavy drama – the sort of thing Billy Wilder often achieved. This film deals with adult responsibility and the pressures of family life. A Swedish family on holiday in the Alps gets involved in an avalanche. Everyone survives, but the father, instead of saving his family, bolts from the approaching snow to save himself. This has the expected effect on his relationship with his wife and family. A very subtle, deadpan black comedy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3630276/?ref_=nv_sr_1

45 YEARS A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12A) 93mins Drama/Thriller Cinema release 28 August DVD release unknown Available November Big hit at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling play a couple (Geoff and Kate) whose celebration of 45 years of marriage is wrecked by the discovery of the body of Geoff’s previous lover in an Alpine glacier 50 years after her accidental death. This is a terrific second film by British wunderkind Andrew Haigh. All about a close relationship now revealed to be not what it seemed. The two leads are perfect (see the press conference on the DVD) and Rampling especially gives a quietly devastating performance. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3544082/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

THE FORGOTTEN KINGDOM A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12A) 96mins Drama Cinema release DVD release unknown Available at once This Menu is all about taking audiences to places they have never been before - in this case from the crime-ridden streets of Johannesburg to the magnificent land of Lesotho. Mokoenya travels back to the homeland from which he was taken as a boy, ostensibly to bury his father. In the process he discovers much about himself. Just look at the images in the trailer for a sample of the visual magnificence of this film. Moving, informative and in its very quiet way completely unforgettable. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1937504/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

GEMMA BOVERY A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (12A) 99 mins Comedy Cinema release 7 August DVD release unknown Available October A Franco-British film version of Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel, itself an affectionate pastiche of Flaubert’s classic novel “Madame Bovary”. An English couple arrive in Flaubert’s home town in rural Normandy in search of the English middle class dream of a perfect life in France. The story is of course a dissection of marital relationships and infidelity but is done by French director Anne Fontaine with an infectious charm and lightness. Gemma Arterton is excellent as the title character, with her schoolgirl French being called upon to resolve very complex issues of romance and lust. Terrific fun. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2788556/?ref_=nv_sr_1

HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE AN ENGLISHMAN A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (12A) 100 mins Cinema release August. Available October Bit of a problem here since this film is not out in UK and USA until August and there are no reviews. However we have the chance of an early release thanks to our relationship with distributor Arrow Films. Scottish director Tom Vaughan leads an impressive cast (Pierce Brosnan, Jessica Alba, Salma Hyek and old faces Malcolm McDowell and Juliet Mills) in a romantic comedy about a hedonistic Cambridge Professor who finds his Byronesque lifestyle changed as a result of his romantic pursuits. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1725986/?ref_=nv_sr_1

LONDON ROAD A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 91mins Musical drama Cinema release 12 June DVD release unknown Available at once Film of the acclaimed National Theatre drama-musical about the effect upon the residents of London Road Ipswich of the notoriety of their serial killer neighbour (the taxi driver who murdered prostitutes). All the words are the actual ones of people interviewed. It is a one-off, something totally unique – and may have a very strong appeal to audience members who know of the award winning stage production. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3573598/?ref_=nv_sr_1

MARSHLAND A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 105 mins Thriller Cinema release DVD release 29 June Available at once. The fourth of our new thrillers. This one swept the boards at the ‘Goyas’, the Spanish Oscars this year – no fewer than 12 awards. Deservedly so. A huge public hit in Spain. Two detectives are sent from Madrid to the deep south of Andalucia in 1980 to investigate the disappearance of two girls and ultimately to unmask a serial killer. It is a totally engrossing film, not least because of its amazing sense of place – the eerie landscape of the marshes and the singularly unique bunch of people who live there. Stunning photography and memorable direction. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3253930/?ref_=nv_sr_1

MISS JULIE A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12) 129mins Classic Drama Cinema release 8 July DVD available Available at once. Liv Ullman transposes August Strindberg’s classic play to a country house in Ireland in the late 19th century. She then leaves her trio of actors to do their stuff – and my goodness they do! Most of the action takes place in the kitchen, where the sense of claustrophobia is overwhelming. Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton are outstanding and it is the watching of such talent that gives the film its pleasure. Chastain in particular is wondrous, with a palpable agony derived from the impossible situation in which she has placed herself in defiance of all she has been taught. Strindberg felt, when he wrote the play in 1888, that his whole world was going crazy – that long held norms were breaking down with nothing solid to replace them. That horror is personified in his heroine – and maybe his message isn’t too irrelevant for our time. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2667960/?ref_=nv_sr_1

MR HOLMES A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (PG) 104 mins Cinema release 19 June DVD release unknown Available October Tour de force performance from Ian McKellen as the ageing Holmes. With his memory beginning to fade, he moves into a country house at the end of World War 2 . He is befriended by the young son of his housekeeper and embarks on one last, almost forgotten unsolved case from half a century ago, which helps him solve a riddle that has always eluded him – relationships. An elegant and absorbing British film that will have wide appeal. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3168230/?ref_=nv_sr_1

NATIONAL GALLERY A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12A) 175 mins Art Documentary. Cinema release 9 January. DVD release 4 May Available at once From famous US film maker Frederick Wiseman, an engrossing look at the work of the National Gallery in London. An extraordinary three hour experience of total immersion in one of the world’s great institutions. “The sequences of the film show the public in various galleries; the education programs, and the scholars, scientists and curators, studying, restoring and planning the exhibitions. The relation between painting and storytelling is explored.” An exceptional film that stays a long time with the viewer and belies in its sheer enjoyment its three hour running time. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3720794/?ref_=nv_sr_1

THE NEW GIRLFRIEND A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 108 minutes Comedy Drama Cinema release DVD release 21 September Available October Daring, challenging, amusing, shocking – in other words a typical film from French Director François Ozon. Prepare to be surprised and be kept guessing! A young woman mourns the untimely death of her best friend but promises to support her husband and child. She learns some unexpected things about the husband and in the process gains a “nouvelle amie” (a new girlfriend). The trailer gives you a hint – but this really is a terrific film with many twists. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3184934/?ref_=nv_sr_1

QUEEN AND COUNTRY A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (15) 114mins Drama Cinema release 12 June DVD release 24 August Available at once. John Boorman’s long-time-coming sequel to his 1987 hit “Hope and Glory” which told the story of children in World War 2. The action has now moved forward to 1952, with the characters about to encounter National Service and the country a new Queen. It is a solid, very likeable film, with excellent recreation of its period - for example Dad up on the roof adjusting the aerial so that the family can glimpse the coronation on the tiny new TV. Very nice performances and one excellent one from David Thewlis as the Sergeant Major. Not the brute so popular in such films but equally as damaging. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2392810/?ref_=nv_sr_1

THE SALT OF THE EARTH A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12) 110mins Documentary Cinema release 24 April DVD release 14 September Available October A MUST for anyone who loves photography but also a seminal film about the human condition. German master director Wim Wenders looks at the life and work of Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado whose pictures have depicted the best and worst of the world and its inhabitants. We are drawn into contemplation of the terrible realities he has witnessed but also learn about the man who has recorded them for ever with his lens. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3674140/?ref_=nv_sr_1

STILL ALICE (12A) 98 mins Drama. Cinema release 6 March. DVD release 9 July Available at once Julianne Moore’s performance as an eminent academic struck down by Alzheimer’s won her both BAFTA and Oscar for Best Actress. With excellent support from Alec Baldwin as her husband, this is a skilfully written account of one woman’s struggle. Might be tough viewing for some Moviola audiences, but an excellent film and one that should be shown. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3316960/?ref_=nv_sr_1

SUITE FRANÇAISE (15) 104 mins Drama. Cinema release 13 March. DVD release 27 July Available at once The long-awaited film set in occupied France from the classic novel & memoir by Irene Nemirovsky. In the first days of occupation, beautiful Lucille Angellier is trapped in a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law as they both await news of her husband: a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees start to pour into their small town, soon followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers' own homes. Lucille initially tries to ignore Bruno von Falk, the handsome and refined German officer staying with them. But soon, they are drawn together by a powerful and forbidden love. Kristin Scott Thomas and the always excellent Michelle Williams head the cast, with the ubiquitous Matthias Schoenaerts as von Falk. Great atmosphere and a vivid depiction of life under foreign occupation. “A gripping slice of history and an intoxicating love story in the classic mould”. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0900387/?ref_=nv_sr_1

THE SECOND BEST MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) 119 mins Comedy. Cinema release 26 February. DVD release 27 June Available at once. Another pleasure-filled journey populated by a wonderful ensemble of what feels like old friends. Richard Gere and Tamsin Greig add to the established repertory. India looks ravishing: totally sanitised and with the locals showing proper deference to the Raj! The colour and music are lovely. Will pack ‘em in. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2555736/?ref_=nv_sr_1

SONG OF THE SEA A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) (PG) 93mins Children’s adventure Cinema release 10 July DVD release unknown Available October Irish animator Tomm Moore returns to the formula he introduced in his “Secret of Kells”, here with a folk tale of a little orphaned girl who turns out to be a Selkie – a sort of Celtic sea fairy. The story has plenty of modern realism and family truths to prevent it becoming total whimsy. However it is the wonderful colour design that delights the eye and charms the mind. A film that will appeal to the ‘family audience’ without any talking down or royalties to Disney. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1865505/?ref_=nv_sr_1

TIMBUKTU A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (12) 97mins Real-life Drama Cinema release 22 May DVD release 10 August Available at once. Set in 2012 when Jihadists occupied the Malian city of Timbuktu, we meet a family of goat herders, local musicians, imams – all of whom are suddenly compelled to obey Sharia law that prohibits the playing of football, music or being in a room with anyone of the opposite sex who is not a member of your family. Malian director Sissaka exposes the cruelty and absurdity of fundamentalist regimes but with a warm and surprisingly humorous touch. Seldom has a film about a subject as grim as this been so generous and feeling about the oppressors as well as the victims. The sequence where the town team plays football without a ball brings tears to the eyes. Yes the human spirit remains unconquered. This is simply a great film which everyone should be “compelled” to watch! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3409392/?ref_=nv_sr_2

THE THIRD MAN (12A) 104mins Classic Thriller Cinema release 31 August 1949 DVD available Available at once A great old friend gets a wash and brush up and delights us again. What a wonder! Script by Graham Greene, fabulous photography by Robert Krasker, direction by Carol Reed. A feast of literary fun. Joseph Cotton, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard and –of course - Orson Welles. Simply one of the best – and always will be. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041959/?ref_=nv_sr_1

TOMORROWLAND: A WORLD BEYOND (12A) 130mins Fantasy Cinema release 22 May DVD release unknown Available at once An ambitious trip into the future – a sort of call to action for kids to take ownership of the future or else inherit a troubled planet. George Clooney plays a bitter old inventor who heads the young heroine on her adventure. Very spectacular and entertaining and suitable for intelligent older children as well as their parents and grandparents. Some superb design and visual flair – not least a rocket launching from the Eiffel Tower! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1964418/?ref_=nv_sr_1

TRASH (15) 109 mins Thriller-Drama. Cinema release 30 January. DVD available Available at once Stephen Daldry’s film about two trash-picking boys from Rio's slums who find a wallet in amongst the daily detritus of their local dump. They little imagine that their lives are about to change forever. When the local police show up, offering a handsome reward for the wallet's return, the boys, Rafael and Gardo, realize that what they've found must be important. Fast paced, exciting adventure and a horribly fascinating glimpse of live in the ‘favellas’ of Brazil – one of the world’s emerging economies. Note: The film is in English and Portuguese so there are some subtitles. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1921149/?ref_=nv_sr_1

THE WATER DIVINER (15) 111mins Drama Cinema release 3 April DVD release 10 August Available at once Australian superstar Russell Crowe's first outing as a director. He takes a seminal event in the collective experience of Australia – the disaster at Gallipoli a century ago - and fashions a very moving story of a man defying military authority to return to the place where his three sons disappeared in the vain hope of finding them. Luminous photography and some first rate acting mark the film as special – with a story about which we in the UK know very little apart from the dry military facts. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3007512/?ref_=nv_sr_1

WHITE GOD A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 118 mins Drama. Cinema release 27 February. DVD release 3 August Available at once Five star reviews for the cinema release of this Swedish/Hungarian co-production. 13-year-old Lili fights to protect her dog Hagen. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing love can conquer any difficulty, Lili sets out to find her dog and save him. Hagen begins his own journey to find Lili, and meets both kindness and cruelty along the way, giving rise to some scenes of violence and dog fighting that earned the film its 15 certificate and are hard to watch. That’s just the outline story for an unforgettable parable of two misfits searching for love and acceptance. It's a unique film that proves that working with children and (lots of) animals, can be a risk well worth taking. A truly amazing and unforgettable Picture. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2844798/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

WILD TALES A Moviola Cinematheque Film (See Note Above) *This film has a minimum guarantee of £50 (15) 122mins Short stories Cinema release 10 April DVD release 15 June Available at once An anthology of six stories in which ordinary people react to everyday social grievances in unexpected ways: For example a waitress serving a special dish to a gangster who destroyed her family, road rage taken to extremes by a bourgeois businessman, an explosives expert who loses patience with the petty officials who keep towing away his car. Sharp, cynical insights into human nature (and not just the Argentinian ones where the Picture is set), savage satire, at times very very funny and also powerful. A hugely enjoyable roller coaster ride and a very big hit in South America, Europe and even among independent cinema audiences here. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3011894/?ref_=nv_sr_1

WOMAN IN GOLD (12A) 109mins Drama Cinema release 10 April DVD release unknown Available at once Helen Mirren excels as a Jewish American who takes on the Austrian government to recover the famous Klimt portrait of her aunt, stolen by the Nazis from her family and never returned. The flashbacks to her escape from Austria are understandably the tensest moments of the film, and are balanced by some very witty writing in the modern sequences. There are echoes of “Philomena” in the woman/lawyer set up and the sparks which fly in a good humoured way between the two. This film will have huge attraction for our core audience. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2404425/?ref_=nv_sr_1

X + Y (12A) 108 mins Drama. Cinema release 13 March. DVD release 13 July. Available at once Nathan is different. He has almost magical mathematical powers. He can't easily relate to other people but he likes patterns. His mother worries. She imagines him facing a difficult future. When tragedy strikes the family, it's hard to see how they will cope, but the intervention of a maverick teacher with problems of his own helps Nathan use his powers to the full. A smashing little British film about genius and the trials and tribulations of relating to others. Sally Hawkins, Rafe Spall and Eddie Marsan are all excellent but it is Asa Butterfield who gives the truly memorable performance. A film of great charm that will appeal to all age groups in our audience. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3149038/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
