With the many fine walks performances during this meet (see later in the newsletter) it was hard to pick who was the most outstanding but in my opinion two performances stood out. The Open 10,000m track walks closed out Day 6 and both wins were outstanding. Dane Bird-Smith won last year’s National men’s 10,000m racewalk with 38:44.61. This year, he improved a further 10 secs to win in an even better time of 38:34.23. Fellow Queenslander Katie Hayward at 16 became the youngest ever Australian 10,000m racewalk champion with her winning time of 45:51.09 in the women’s race. They are worthy co-Walkers of the Week. Dane Bird-Smith, Katie Hayward and Jess Pickles in Sydney at the Australian Open 10,000m Walk My updated All-Time rankings lists now show Australian men under 42 minutes and 21 women under 46 minutes.
