It seems remarkable that two years have passed since I communicated a similar message to Donetsk, Ukraine, which hosted the eighth edition of these championships. For this year’s hosts Colombia, the championships are an historic moment as they mark the first occasion that their member federation, which joined the IAAF in 1948, has ever hosted an IAAF World Athletics Series event. The IAAF World Youth Championships give Cali, the sports capital of Colombia, its first opportunity to impress on the international athletics stage since it hosted the 1971 edition of the Pan-American Games. They are also a major opportunity for Athletics to inspire the youth throughout South America given that, excluding road events, the last IAAF track and field championships held here were the 2000 edition of the World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile. In Cali we will have the privilege to survey the future stars and trends of our sport, as we watch the current generation of the world’s best under 18-year-old athletes compete on a global track and field platform for the first time in their young careers. Possibly the next Kirani James or another Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix, Elena Isinbaeva, Valerie Adams… awaits in the wings. Most importantly we hope that the IAAF World Youth Championships will help to encourage kids to recognise that ‘fit is fun’ and to adopt healthy lifestyle choices. I thoroughly recommend this Statistics Handbook which has been compiled diligently by the statisticians of the IAAF Statistics and Documentation Service, Ottavio Castellini and Félix Capilla, it is an invaluable resource for media and fans alike who wish to gain maximum enjoyment and understanding of the inspiring competitions we will witness in Cali. It is the fifth edition of the series that began at 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, followed with statistics handbooks issued for 2011 and 2013 World Youth Championships, respectively held in Lille and Donetsk, and the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014. This new edition keeps the same structure as previous, with four main paragraphs: - Medallists of eight previous World Youth Championships (1999-2013) and Youth Olympic Games (2010 & 2014) - IAAF Youth Best Performances - IAAF 2014 World Outdoor Youth Lists - IAAF World Youth All-time Lists There are new paragraphs also: medal tables for the single editions, total medal table and placing table. This book, as its previous editions, is compiled by the IAAF Statistics & Documentation Senior Manager, Ottavio Castellini, and by Félix Capilla, an external IAAF Consultant for Statistics. General notes We want to provide this book’s readers with some further explanations that you will find hereunder. First of all, we would like to draw your attention on the fact that the compilation is made according the traditional rules of any athletics compilation of results. The lists have two levels: - Performers: athletes will appear once with their best performance if it is within this limit. - Performances: athletes will appear every time they record a performance within this limit. Kelly Ruddick 23:23 and Stuart Kollmorgen 22:13 won their respective races and there were a whole swag of walkers over the 80% Age Graded Performance mark. The best were Heather Carr with 92.66% (26:59 for W60) and Bob Gardiner 90.31% (29:36 for M75). It was great to see Tony Johnson back in walking mode and doing it in fine style to win the M70 with 30:41. We also welcomed Croatian walker Sasha Radotic, currently in Australia for next weekend's Coburg 24 Hour Run – he took third in the M40 division with 27:15.
