Competing in the Little Athletics Victoria U15 1500m walk championship at the Casey Fields athletics track in Berwick (Melbourne) last weekend, she won in a huge time of 6:29.19, setting a new championship record and doing a 26 sec PB! Jemma showed her potential with a win in the 2015 LBG Carnival U14 2km walk last June (9:23) but it is this summer that she has really kicked down. She won the Victorian U16 3000m championship in 14:35 in February and then improved to 14:13 in taking third in the Australian U16 3000m in Perth in March (she also took bronze in the U18 5000m walk with 15:29 at these same Australian Championships). Cousins of international walkers Jared and Rachel Tallent, Jemma and her younger sister Alanna are the latest in a long line of talented walkers to come from the Victorian country city of Ballarat. -

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. Jared and Claire with their second prize cheques in Chihuahua, along with Satoshi Yanagisawa (photo from Satoshi) MORE WALKERS ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM With the Australian T&F Olympic Trials completed last weekend in Melbourne, Athletics Australia has now released the names of the next group of Olympic selections and the walkers are to the fore. -

For Jared, it was another fantastic top-eight finish and it was in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the Olympic 50km event this week, Jared upped the ante even further, taking his second successive Olympic 50km silver medal and recording a 2+ minute PB time of 3:36:53, also breaking the Olympic record into the bargain. What a performance! Walker of the Week! 50KM MEN'S RACEWALK, OLYMPIC GAMES, THE MALL, LONDON, SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2012 The men's Olympic 50km walk started at 9AM at the Mall in London and I was one of the many spectators who lined the 2km loop to cheer on the contestants. My report on the Men's 50km Race Walk is taken from that of Dave Martin for the IAAF (see http://www.iaaf.org/Mini/OLY12/News/NewsDetail.aspx?id=67421) Sergey Kirdyapkin, the man to be beaten having won the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk in May, shattered the existing record of 3:37:09 with a decisive victory. -

On Saturday, she won the Victorian Open 20km walk championship with a time of 1:36:46 (a 12 sec PB). The time also set new W40 Australian and Victorian records and comes on top of her 10km PB last month. • VRWC walker Margaret Beaumont has been celebrating her arrival in the W75 division with a series of new Masters records and this was once again the case on Saturday as she won the VMA/AMA W75 20km Championships in a time of 3:06:59. This time sets new W75 Australian and Victorian records. • 31 year old Chris Erickson won the Victorian Open 20km championship on Saturday in a very fast 1:23:28. This was in fact the fastest he has walked in Australia and betters once again the IAAF World Championships A qualifying standard of 84 minutes. -

With the many fine walks performances during this meet (see later in the newsletter) it was hard to pick who was the most outstanding but in my opinion two performances stood out. The Open 10,000m track walks closed out Day 6 and both wins were outstanding. Dane Bird-Smith won last year’s National men’s 10,000m racewalk with 38:44.61. This year, he improved a further 10 secs to win in an even better time of 38:34.23. Fellow Queenslander Katie Hayward at 16 became the youngest ever Australian 10,000m racewalk champion with her winning time of 45:51.09 in the women’s race. They are worthy co-Walkers of the Week. Open Men 50 km walk The main event in this meet is always the 50km and, in 2011, it saw nearly 80 entrants, a huge field indeed. Near perfect weather on the Saturday morning meant that big times were on the cards and the walkers did not disappoint. 2010 World Race Walking Cup 50km winner Matej Tóth went in as a clear favourite and he was in a class of his own, delighting the crowd by going to the front immediately and quickly building a convincing lead over the chasing pack. At 40km, he was on target for a time around 3:37 and it was only the strengthening wind in the dying stages of the race which forced him to slow, his final time still a PB and a new Slovakian national record. “It was like I wanted; fast to begin with and then I try to see whether I can keep up the pace. -

It broke Jess Rothwell's 2003 Athletics Bendigo U14 Girls record by 1.6 seconds and was a 27 second PB. I think that deserves Walker of the Week! Launceston in September - the Victorian U14 girls team - Madison Hill, Zahra Hayes, Tegan Miller and Jemma Peart BRWC WILLI SAWALL 3KM HANDICAP, LAKE WENDOUREE, BALLARAT, SUNDAY 1 DECEMBER Thanks to Sarah Brennan for the latest results from the Ballarat Race Walking Club. It was a sunny but windy day for the annual Willi Sawall 3km Handicap which was held in conjunction with the KIDS Foundation / Best O Lake 3km Fun Run. This provided a great opportunity for our walkers to strut their stuff amongst the fun runners, and they beat quite a few to the finish line! A lot of PBs were recorded as a result. The handicap win went to young Kayla Bridges, who walked a big 1:12 PB of 20:52. -

Kim was one of our top juniors some years ago but faded in his early senior years. The past 12 months has seen him getting his motivation back and he was rewarded with an 8km PB of 36:36 on Saturday 5 May. Well done Kim! This week's Walker of the Week will be a three way vote after 3 very significant performances here in Saransk, Russia, in the 2012 World Race Walking Cup. Here they are in chronological order. • 15 year old Nathan Brill was the youngest competitor in the Junior Men's 10km Road Walk but he let his feet do the talking with an 8 sec PB time of 44:52, finishing 32nd from 67 starters. To finish in the top half of the field against an older group of the best Junior walkers in the world at such a young age guarantees him a place in my weekly nominations. • 30 year old Chris Erickson was one of the very few walkers to achieve a PB in the Open Men's 20km walk but that is what he did with his 21st place time of 1:22:20. -
