Photo by Mark Easton Breda, Holland by Pam Ficken Our team of 7 were met at Eindhoven airport by Hans Van de Knapp and taken to Breda by bus and train. After checking in at our hotel it was off to dinner in the centre of Breda, taking a look at the loop course in the nearby beautiful park. The 20KM started at 8.00am on the Sunday morning. Dan and Dom walked well with times of 89.26 and 90.56, only beaten by Colin Griffin of Ireland. Our young team in the Women's 10K and Junior Men's 10K walked brilliantly. Lauren Whelan was 2nd (53.22), Jasmine Nicholls was 3rd (53.57) a personal best and Heather Butcher, in her first 10K, was 5th (55.16). For the boys, Callum Wilkinson was 2nd (48.56) in his first 10K and Guy Thomas was 3rd (51.25). Overall we finished 2nd in the match, only beaten by 1 point by the Irish team. I am sure the experience they gained will hold them all in good stead for the future. Dom and Dan were a great help to them. Many thanks to the parents and to Joan and Ron Wallwork who came out to Breda to add extra support, to the Dutch who made us all so welcome and lastly to the RWA who made the trip possible. Photo by Ron Wallwork Please note that Steve Uttley was 14th in a time of 1.52.55 and Steve Allen 15th in 1.53.30 both walking as guests. Sorry for not including this information previously. These were awarded in February 2013, apologies for the delay in reporting. Lancashire Trophy: (Best Female Walker) Nominated Sandra Brown and Johanna Jackson. Awarded to Johanna. Edgar Horton Cup: (Best performance over 50km) Dominic King International Trophy: (Most worthy international performance) Dominic King Ken Smith Trophy: (Best YAG performance) Cameron Corbishley Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to everyone in the 2013 competition year. Result of South Yorkshire Schools by Brian Adams Following on from the U13 British 3,000m Record achieved by Ana Garcia at the Inter-Area Ana took Kathryn Granger British 1,000m best down from 4.47 to 4.32.1. Alana Zeidler moved into 11th on the U13's all time list with 5.14.9. These two then went on to finish 3rd & 4th in the U13 800m run. 5th South Yorkshire League by Brian Adams It was great to see 3 newcomers at Millhouses Park, though 3 of the regulars were missing for various reasons so 6 finishers was fairly usual. The target time for everyone to cross the finish line was 18.56 so three people beat their target time. Alana got within 12 seconds of her Personal Best but only finished 4th. Heritage Group Sarnia Walking Club Championships: Race 6 Osmond Priaulx Playing Fields, Guernsey: Rob Elliot Rob Elliott has hundreds of race walk victories to his name over his long career, but this latest one was probably the luckiest of them all, as he overhauled the long time leader Phil Lockwood in the final hundred metres of the Heritage Group Championships over 5,000 metres. The unlucky Lockwood had built up a gap of never more than 15 seconds over Elliott in the first half of the race, going through 1,000 metres in 5.21 and 3,000 metres in 16.33. Elliott, hoping to get under 28 minutes passed 3,000 metres ten seconds behind and planned to chase Lockwood down in the final laps. As the gap came down Elliott’s bid faltered as his hamstring started to twinge so played safe and held back a bit. With a lap to go and the end in sight, he increased the effort to keep the gap the same, but without warning Lockwood hit trouble with 250 metres remaining. His back problem of recent weeks first slowed him down, then threw him into a stagger before coming to a halt in the final straight as Elliott went passed. Page 3 of 26 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Revised Race Walking Record June 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association Race 6 cont’d A few words of encouragement from Elliott and Allan Harris who was being lapped gave him the impetuous to carry on and cross the line 43 seconds down on Elliott’s winning time of 28.04. Third place went to Terry Bates in just over thirty minutes. In the women’s Championship the winner once again was Jayne Le Noury in 36.29, ahead of Kay Coulson. The walk of the day was by Peter Beckerleg, who set a new personal best time of 33.45 which gave him victory in the accompanying Jubilee Handicap Championship in which he leads from Rob Elliott and Mick Le Sauvage. Willow Trust One Hour Track walk; Osmond Priaulx Playing Fields, Guernsey by Rob Elliott Longest distance by Elliott in Willow Trust Hour Rob Elliott walked the furthest distance in the Willow Trust One Hour Track walk when he walked 10,306 metres in the allotted time. He expected to walk a close race with Phil Lockwood, who pulled out of the event after 9 laps with a back problem. At this point Lockwood held a 70 metres lead over Elliott who was closing the gap slowly. Elliott, aiming for at least 10 kilometres in the hour was ahead of his target for all of the race, passing 5 kilometres in 29 minutes and 10 kilometres in around 58.20. Second furthest distance went to Peter Beckerleg with 8,603 metres and then Mick Le Sauvage 8,571 metres. Mick walked 190 metres further than his own Age Best time. Horwich 2013 by Eric Horwill The7th edition of this popular masters championship saw probably the best weather conditions. Part of the course has been recently resurfaced so it was not surprising that some fast times were recorded. With 2 of the favourites failing to make the start line, Patrick Murphy one of our regular visitors from the Emerald Isle pulled away from the rest of the field with ease. 3 athletes assisted the minor placings with places changing all through the 3 lap course. There were 2 new championship best performances (and course records), both in the 70 age group.

But Matsunaga was race walking even faster and had closed the gap to two seconds, while China’s Zelin Cai decided to protectively cover the two men in front of him and had pushed hard to remove himself from the pack. Competing in the Little Athletics Victoria U15 1500m walk championship at the Casey Fields athletics track in Berwick (Melbourne) last weekend, she won in a huge time of 6:29.19, setting a new championship record and doing a 26 sec PB! Jemma showed her potential with a win in the 2015 LBG Carnival U14 2km walk last June (9:23) but it is this summer that she has really kicked down. She won the Victorian U16 3000m championship in 14:35 in February and then improved to 14:13 in taking third in the Australian U16 3000m in Perth in March (she also took bronze in the U18 5000m walk with 15:29 at these same Australian Championships). Cousins of international walkers Jared and Rachel Tallent, Jemma and her younger sister Alanna are the latest in a long line of talented walkers to come from the Victorian country city of Ballarat.

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. For Jared, it was another fantastic top-eight finish and it was in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the Olympic 50km event this week, Jared upped the ante even further, taking his second successive Olympic 50km silver medal and recording a 2+ minute PB time of 3:36:53, also breaking the Olympic record into the bargain. What a performance! Walker of the Week! 50KM MEN'S RACEWALK, OLYMPIC GAMES, THE MALL, LONDON, SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2012 The men's Olympic 50km walk started at 9AM at the Mall in London and I was one of the many spectators who lined the 2km loop to cheer on the contestants. My report on the Men's 50km Race Walk is taken from that of Dave Martin for the IAAF (see http://www.iaaf.org/Mini/OLY12/News/NewsDetail.aspx?id=67421) Sergey Kirdyapkin, the man to be beaten having won the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk in May, shattered the existing record of 3:37:09 with a decisive victory.

On Saturday, she won the Victorian Open 20km walk championship with a time of 1:36:46 (a 12 sec PB). The time also set new W40 Australian and Victorian records and comes on top of her 10km PB last month. • VRWC walker Margaret Beaumont has been celebrating her arrival in the W75 division with a series of new Masters records and this was once again the case on Saturday as she won the VMA/AMA W75 20km Championships in a time of 3:06:59. This time sets new W75 Australian and Victorian records. • 31 year old Chris Erickson won the Victorian Open 20km championship on Saturday in a very fast 1:23:28. This was in fact the fastest he has walked in Australia and betters once again the IAAF World Championships A qualifying standard of 84 minutes.

Open Men 50 km walk The main event in this meet is always the 50km and, in 2011, it saw nearly 80 entrants, a huge field indeed. Near perfect weather on the Saturday morning meant that big times were on the cards and the walkers did not disappoint. 2010 World Race Walking Cup 50km winner Matej Tóth went in as a clear favourite and he was in a class of his own, delighting the crowd by going to the front immediately and quickly building a convincing lead over the chasing pack. At 40km, he was on target for a time around 3:37 and it was only the strengthening wind in the dying stages of the race which forced him to slow, his final time still a PB and a new Slovakian national record. “It was like I wanted; fast to begin with and then I try to see whether I can keep up the pace.

It broke Jess Rothwell's 2003 Athletics Bendigo U14 Girls record by 1.6 seconds and was a 27 second PB. I think that deserves Walker of the Week! It was a sunny but windy day for the annual Willi Sawall 3km Handicap which was held in conjunction with the KIDS Foundation / Best O Lake 3km Fun Run. This provided a great opportunity for our walkers to strut their stuff amongst the fun runners, and they beat quite a few to the finish line! A lot of PBs were recorded as a result. The handicap win went to young Kayla Bridges, who walked a big 1:12 PB of 20:52.

Kim was one of our top juniors some years ago but faded in his early senior years. The past 12 months has seen him getting his motivation back and he was rewarded with an 8km PB of 36:36 on Saturday 5 May. Well done Kim! This week's Walker of the Week will be a three way vote after 3 very significant performances here in Saransk, Russia, in the 2012 World Race Walking Cup. Here they are in chronological order. • 15 year old Nathan Brill was the youngest competitor in the Junior Men's 10km Road Walk but he let his feet do the talking with an 8 sec PB time of 44:52, finishing 32nd from 67 starters. To finish in the top half of the field against an older group of the best Junior walkers in the world at such a young age guarantees him a place in my weekly nominations. • 30 year old Chris Erickson was one of the very few walkers to achieve a PB in the Open Men's 20km walk but that is what he did with his 21st place time of 1:22:20.

Carolyn also kept a clean card and was runner up in 10:34.3, whilst Emma Dyos maintained a clear third place in 10:58.6. The men's race was a similar tussle between the representatives of MMAC and EMAC. This time Adam Hills could not get past Mark Williams who won in 10:23.0. Adam did attract an early red card yet kept his form and second place in a time of 10:41.6. Colin Harle, Chris Hobbs, and Roger Michell were always close together from the start, Colin eventually pulling away for third place in 12:18.2.
