Breda, Holland by Pam Ficken Our team of 7 were met at Eindhoven airport by Hans Van de Knapp and taken to Breda by bus and train. After checking in at our hotel it was off to dinner in the centre of Breda, taking a look at the loop course in the nearby beautiful park.

The 20KM started at 8.00am on the Sunday morning. Dan and Dom walked well with times of 89.26 and 90.56, only beaten by Colin Griffin of Ireland. Our young team in the Women's 10K and Junior Men's 10K walked brilliantly. Lauren Whelan was 2nd (53.22), Jasmine Nicholls was 3rd (53.57) a personal best and Heather Butcher, in her first 10K, was 5th (55.16). For the boys, Callum Wilkinson was 2nd (48.56) in his first 10K and Guy Thomas was 3rd (51.25). Overall we finished 2nd in the match, only beaten by 1 point by the Irish team.

I am sure the experience they gained will hold them all in good stead for the future. Dom and Dan were a great help to them. Many thanks to the parents and to Joan and Ron Wallwork who came out to Breda to add extra support, to the Dutch who made us all so welcome and lastly to the RWA who made the trip possible.

Please note that Steve Uttley was 14th in a time of 1.52.55 and Steve Allen 15th in 1.53.30 both walking as guests. Sorry for not including this information previously.

Announcing the RWA Annual Award Winners The following trophies have been awarded by the RWA for the 2012 competition year. These were awarded in February 2013, apologies for the delay in reporting.

Lancashire Trophy: (Best Female Walker) Nominated Sandra Brown and Johanna Jackson. Awarded to Johanna.

Edgar Horton Cup: (Best performance over 50km)

International Trophy: (Most worthy international performance) Dominic King

Ken Smith Trophy: (Best YAG performance) Cameron Corbishley

Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to everyone in the 2013 competition year. Result of South Yorkshire Schools by Brian Adams Following on from the U13 British 3,000m Record achieved by Ana Garcia at the Inter-Area Ana took Kathryn Granger British 1,000m best down from 4.47 to 4.32.1. Alana Zeidler moved into 11th on the U13's all time list with 5.14.9. These two then went on to finish 3rd & 4th in the U13 800m run. 5th South Yorkshire League by Brian Adams It was great to see 3 newcomers at Millhouses Park, though 3 of the regulars were missing for various reasons so 6 finishers was fairly usual. The target time for everyone to cross the finish line was 18.56 so three people beat their target time. Alana got within 12 seconds of her Personal Best but only finished 4th. Heritage Group Sarnia Walking Club Championships: Race 6 Osmond Priaulx Playing Fields, Guernsey: Rob Elliot Rob Elliott has hundreds of race walk victories to his name over his long career, but this latest one was probably the luckiest of them all, as he overhauled the long time leader Phil Lockwood in the final hundred metres of the Heritage Group Championships over 5,000 metres. The unlucky Lockwood had built up a gap of never more than 15 seconds over Elliott in the first half of the race, going through 1,000 metres in 5.21 and 3,000 metres in 16.33. Elliott, hoping to get under 28 minutes passed 3,000 metres ten seconds behind and planned to chase Lockwood down in the final laps.

As the gap came down Elliott’s bid faltered as his hamstring started to twinge so played safe and held back a bit.

With a lap to go and the end in sight, he increased the effort to keep the gap the same, but without warning Lockwood hit trouble with 250 metres remaining. His back problem of recent weeks first slowed him down, then threw him into a stagger before coming to a halt in the final straight as Elliott went passed.

Page 3 of 26 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Revised Race Walking Record June 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

Race 6 cont’d A few words of encouragement from Elliott and Allan Harris who was being lapped gave him the impetuous to carry on and cross the line 43 seconds down on Elliott’s winning time of 28.04.

Third place went to Terry Bates in just over thirty minutes.

In the women’s Championship the winner once again was Jayne Le Noury in 36.29, ahead of Kay Coulson.

The walk of the day was by Peter Beckerleg, who set a new personal best time of 33.45 which gave him victory in the accompanying Jubilee Handicap Championship in which he leads from Rob Elliott and Mick Le Sauvage.

Willow Trust One Hour Track walk; Osmond Priaulx Playing Fields, Guernsey by Rob Elliott Longest distance by Elliott in Willow Trust Hour

Rob Elliott walked the furthest distance in the Willow Trust One Hour Track walk when he walked 10,306 metres in the allotted time. He expected to walk a close race with Phil Lockwood, who pulled out of the event after 9 laps with a back problem. At this point Lockwood held a 70 metres lead over Elliott who was closing the gap slowly. Elliott, aiming for at least 10 kilometres in the hour was ahead of his target for all of the race, passing 5 kilometres in 29 minutes and 10 kilometres in around 58.20. Second furthest distance went to Peter Beckerleg with 8,603 metres and then Mick Le Sauvage 8,571 metres. Mick walked 190 metres further than his own Age Best time. Horwich 2013 by Eric Horwill The7th edition of this popular masters championship saw probably the best weather conditions. Part of the course has been recently resurfaced so it was not surprising that some fast times were recorded. With 2 of the favourites failing to make the start line, Patrick Murphy one of our regular visitors from the Emerald Isle pulled away from the rest of the field with ease. 3 athletes assisted the minor placings with places changing all through the 3 lap course.

There were 2 new championship best performances (and course records), both in the 70 age group. Shaun Lightman made a very successful debut and Andrea Lennon bettered her own time from last year.

A good field of runners contested their BMAF Championship. As they started only 2 or 3 minutes after the walkers, most (but not all) overtook the walkers field. Ideal conditions for the spectators, a good deal of support for the athletes prior to cycling events and the carnival procession. Well done to the local officials for providing a real family day out.

Welsh Athletics Championship by Dave Ainsworth Winds were so severe walkers were almost blown off their feet along the back straight, while in the home straight progress was most difficult. Hurdles, stacked on the infield, blew across the track while walking progressed. That would have been something: disqualified for going over hurdles! Pity the poor so-and-so who was last man - he made a walking debut (after being hauled off the track in the 1,500 metres run when still "running" at 16 minutes as officials' patience snapped). He faced winds despite being built like a tank! 2nd man Stephen Walker (also 2012 silver medallist) then headed north for the BMAF 5K Championship at Horwich.

The National 100 miles Championship by Steve Taylor The National Long Distance Race Walking Championships return to the Isle of Man in 2013 after an absence of seven years. It is the third time that the championships will be held on the Island and the local race walking fraternity we were very pleased to be asked to host the event again. Of course with all such events committed organisers and sponsorship is required but after much deliberation a small but enthusiastic committee was formed and having secured the generous sponsorship from Tower Insurance it was decided to go ahead and stage the event.

The race will take place at our National Sports Centre on August 3rd and 4th starting at 12noon. The main event is over 100 miles but competitors will also get the opportunity to carry on to see how far they can walk in 24 hours. We are also staging a 20 mile starlight stroll, an event that proved very popular in 2006 and this will commence at 10pm.

Distance walking is very popular in the Isle of Man with our Parish Walk attracting a field of 1494 this year, last year we had over 1800 entries although the number of starters was actually 1538. However, due to the size of the course, we have imposed a limit of 100 walkers in the race and so far we have received 78 entries. The Isle of Man has already provided a good number of entrants but we have also received entries from the UK, Europe, Africa and the USA. We have 44 Centurions who live or have lived on the Isle of Man including Sean Hands, winner is 2005 and 2006 and John Cannell who was winner in 1987 and has a best time of 17h 10m 15 s from 1988, a time that ranks him 3rd on the all time British list. JC as he is affectionately known has also entered the 2013 event.

Hopes are high for another Manx win with Richard Gerrard and Vinny Lynch joint record holders at the Parish Walk amongst the entrants along with four time in a row winner Jock Waddington. Jock is also the main organiser of the 100. All three along with Jeanette Morgan were invited to compete in this year Paris to Colmar event but turned the offer down due to having already committed to both the Parish and the 100.

For the event we are only taking entries online. Most people have internet access these days and even if they don't they know someone who does. By taking entries online there is no chance of anything being lost in the post. Check out our website http://www.isleofman100milewalk.co.uk/ and get your entry in now as it is filling up fast.

Did you know that the venue, the NSC as it is now called was where Paul Nihill's set his world record 20km walk (84m 50s) back in July 1972.

IAAF Permit Race; Dublin. By Paul Warburton from IAAF website There was a comfortable win for Guatemalan favourite Erick Barrondo in thre 20km Race Walk at the Dublin Grand Prix of Race Walking – part of this year’s IAAF Race Walking Challenge and the last event in the series before the IAAF World Championships – but there were surprises in the other two events in the Irish capital on Saturday (29).

For the first time in the 19 years of the Grand Prix, there was also a switch in venue with Phoenix Park being rejected in favour of the user-friendly St Anne’s which the organisers judged was better for attracting spectators.

The 2km circuit had just the slightest of rises, and the walkers had to tackle a breeze that got up for the two 20km races, but when it came to road surface, this was as good as it gets. There was even a suspicion that the organisers had been out with a paver during the night, such was the smoothness of the tarmac.

Making early use of the slick surface in the 50km was Barrondo’s compatriot and training partner Jaime Quiyuch, a former Pan-American Games bronze medallist with a best of 3:50:33.

The Guatemalan cruised through 10km in 46:27, with Finland’s Veli-Matti Partanen towing the British twins Daniel and Dominic King more than minute in his wake.

Quiyuch hit 20km in 1:32:56 and appeared away and gone. He had a lead of almost five minutes over the 22-year-old Finn at 40km but then things started to badly wrong from Quiyuch who threw in the towel on the next lap.

It was a case of second time lucky for Partanen, after failing to finish at the European Cup Race Walking in the Slovakian spa town of Dudince last month, as he pushed on to dip under the magical four-hour barrier with 1:10 to spare and won in 3:58:50.

In fact, his metronomic count on each kilometre was uncanny.

Partanen’s slowest kilometre was 4:37; his quickest 4:35 to underline an even pace that paid off handsomely. survived to finish second more than 19 minutes back in 4:17:15, with only one other finisher from a field of nine.

Partanen wasn’t the only winner happy in Dublin.

Spain’s Maria Jose Poves has for many years been languishing in the shade of some of her better-known team mates but, after winning the bronze medal at last year’s IAAF World Race Walking Cup, and in the absence of the likes Maria Vasco, Beatriz Pascual and Julia Takacs, the 35-year-old Poves seized her chance to shine again.

Page 6 of 26 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Revised Race Walking Record June 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

IAAF Permit Race; Dublin cont’d The smart money was initially on Mirna Ortiz, who had clocked 1:28:31 for second place in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge meeting at Rio Maior, Portugal, in April. However, the Guatemalan incurred the judges’ displeasure at 15km despite holding a 21-second lead, over Poves; and the latter strode on to win in 1:29:58, only just over a minute slower than her best when she wasn’t walking into a stiff breeze for part of the course. In second place, ’s 20-year-old Yannelli Caballero is starting to fulfil some of her youthful promise and came home in a personal best time of 1:30.58, improving by over three minutes in her first race over the distance at an altitude approaching sea level.

Caballero was second over 5km to Russia’s 2012 Olympic Games champion Yelena Lashmanova at the 2009 IAAF Youth Championships and won the 2010 Central and Caribbean Championships junior 10km title and is coached by 1996 Olympian Ignacio Zamudio.

If the Guatemalan challenge had proved less than robust in the first two senior races of the day, Erick Barrondo changed all that and made sure the men’s 20km was over by the halfway point reached in 40:22.

That’s how long it took the 2012 Olympic Games silver medallist to shake off an early bunch of seven and motor to the finishing line.

There have been critics of Barrondo’s style in the past, which saw him disqualified in the 50km at the 2012 Olympic Games, but here he was fluency itself in a race where the gaps at the end were massive.

Spain’s Benjamin Sanchez was an isolated figure for second in 1:23:25 and Mexico’s Omar Segura was more than a minute in arrears in third place as he completed the podium in 1:25.00.

Former IAAF Race Walking Challenge winner Eder Sanchez was forced to call it a day at 16km when recovery from knee surgery in January wasn’t quite as swift as the Mexican hoped.

Bates and Le Noury in Championship Walk wins by Rob Elliott Terry Bates headed the small field on a gloomy morning in the Heritage Group SWC Championships, with a time minutes ahead of his own expectations. On his own from the start he passed the halfway point in 67.17, at which point he held a near four minutes lead over second man Dave Dorey. In the latter half he held his pace up to 15 kilometres before producing his fastest 5 kilometres split of 31.15 to cross the line in 2.12.09.

Page 7 of 26 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Revised Race Walking Record June 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

Championship Walk cont’d Dave Dorey, in good form recently and with training behind him, finished a clear second with a time of 2.23.23, only losing time in the final quarter of the race when he slipped from early 5 kilometre splits of 35.30, 35.22 and 35.36 down to 36.55. Well past his best ever times set many years ago, he managed to remove 15 minutes from his last 20 kms race.

Third man home was Peter Beckerleg in his first race of this distance, whilst Kevin Le Noury and Allan Harris both retired at 10 kilometres.Jayne Le Noury continued to win the women’s section with a winning time of 2.29.45, ahead of Rose Druckes who retired at the halfway point.

Readers Page ~ your opportunity to get involved…Letters We would like your input and contributions to the Record. Please send them to us at [email protected] or post to: The Race Walking Record at The Picture House, 134G Southgate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. IP33 2AF. Please note: All views expressed are those of the stated author, not the editors. We will endeavour to check facts however if you have any concerns or comments please contact us. Pit lane trials: A chance to put your views forward on the consultation The IAAF have recently published new guidance on how they consider the Pit Lane rule could be implemented. It is believed that this adjustment would alleviate some of the concerns put forward however as this is a new development since the Inter Area testing.

It is proposed that an athlete be directed to enter the pit lane after receiving three red cards from three judges. If a fourth red card is then received from a different judge the athlete will then be disqualified.

All the feedback below was received prior to the above changes being publicised. Pit lane trial opinion by Jonathon Hobbs Rather shamefully, I’ve not been particularly vocal about my opposition to the new pit lane rule, believing that it would not affect me. It is now at the point where I feel compelled to voice my opinion.

On learning that the new rule was going to be used for the inter-area match in Tamworth, I resolved that if I received 3 cards and was sent into the pit lane then I would just drop out of my own volition. My perspective was that, as a senior, if 3 separate judges are giving me cards then I shouldn't finish the race. (Obviously I dropped out anyway, having received one card, so the validity of my point is questionable.) For juniors and veterans, I find it very difficult to see the merits, but for seniors I feel that there are simply none.

I’ve only been in race walking for 10 years, so I’ve only known it in its present format, but I’m well aware (partly from reading vintage copies of Record) of the various changes that the rules have gone through. Just like there is now, there was clearly a lot of debate and unhappiness with previous changes. Whether these changes have been for the better or worse, is no doubt still debated. However, I feel that the motivations behind the current propositions are wrong. My impression is that the pressure is coming from other athletes, or indeed non-athletes, who do not understand, or want to understand, the event, rather than from within the race walking community for the sake of intrinsic improvement.

The only positive argument I have heard for it is that it could stop novices from leaving, which makes one wonder why it was used in a senior race. Regardless, this suggestion is, frankly, ridiculous. Surely the only way to add to the embarrassment or humiliation, that is supposedly encouraging novices to give up, is to make them stand at the side of the track while they watch their rivals/friends go past.

And for it to be a great enough deterrent, the penalty needs to be such that one cannot serve a penalty and still do a good performance.

Indeed, were there not youngsters progressing to senior level when it was ‘one shout and out’? The lack of progression from junior to senior (myself being apparently a complete rarity) is quite clearly due to other issues. I do not feel that the solution lies in devaluing the event with these sorts of rule changes. I don’t disagree that there was justification for trialling it, and I think credit is due to those who organised it. But I sincerely hope that it will stop here. ….. by Olive Dobson. Please note some of the feedback has been removed as this relates to the operational element of the trial. It has been forwarded in full to the RWA.

As the Recorder for the Coventry Race Olive has put forward the following opinion.

The basic idea is good but possibly not too different from Time Penalties which may be easier to operate.

Coventry was the 1st time for most Competitors, officials & spectators, & it was clear that not all were fully aware of the system. (I tried to find out from Web site before the race but failed. I was able to come & hear the explanation to the athletes at the start but some Judges were already in position so may not have been fully briefed).

As there was no program for spectators we at the Board were constantly be asked the names to go with the numbers on the Board.

The [Warning Posting] Board was not large enough

The usual Recording sheets are not really suitable for Time Penalties & a different version would be better.

….. by William Sutherland I fear that the idea of Pit Lanes will only put Race Walking in a worse light than it is presently. It certainly will do little, with the sliding scale of penalties, to deter those who are plainly not complying with the rules. I feel that we most probably in the future will attract the wrong type of competitor into race walking, who is not prepared to wait and practise the finer points of a good fair walking style. Also how many extra officials will be needed to operate the ‘pit lane are?’ A race walker can only move so fast and be legally walking, but sadly what we see today at international level is so often merely straight leg running.

…. by Margo Schulter The pit lane rule is a wonderful learning and training tool for young race walkers, and indeed race walkers of all ages. Correction follows swiftly on the heels of the fault, and the walker may then resume the race, putting the lesson to good use.

Page 24 of 26 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Revised Race Walking Record June 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

Races conducted in a more traditional fashion may replace disqualification with a device used under the pit lane rule for the last portion of the race: what I term a tariff, a time penalty added to a walker's recorded finishing time or "raw time" in order to determine the "adjusted time" or official result. In races using Category A rules, a walker could receive a tariff for the third and each subsequent red card for a given type of fault (loss of conduct or bent knee). Obvious loss of contact might carry rapidly escalating tariffs with each new card, while walkers with small and difficult-to-remedy bent knee faults could receive a mild tariff such as 15 seconds per card.

…. by Margo Schulter cont’d Adopting the tariff system would immediately mitigate the impact of IAAF Rule 230.1 on many Master walkers and others for whom the bent knee rule is a stumbling block. They would finish their races, and could point to their raw times to show what the results would have been under different rules.

Tariffs might open the option of restoring the pre-1995 contact rule, using video analysis at the Olympics and other high-level events to estimate a walker's average flight time for each kilometer of a race and apply a tariff according to some fair schedule. Competitors who consistently showed a double support phase -- allowing for a few isolated missteps or stumbles and the like -- would receive no tariff. Elite race walking might thus be gently and deftly guided toward a more well-grounded technique.

However things evolve, the pit lane rule and tariffs offer a better way for walkers, judges, and all who are involved.

Congratulations to the IAAF Walking Commission and the RWA for sowing seeds which may bear good fruit worldwide.

That’s all folks! By Dave Ainsworth On June 23rd, 60 years to the day he made his athletics debut, Colchester born (5th September 1939) PAUL NIHILL MBE announced his retirement from competition. A true all-time great, Paul was the first British male athlete selected for 4 Olympic Games (1964-76 inclusive). In 64 he earned a 50 Kilometres silver medal...only seconds behind the victor!

He doubled-up in 1972 (20K & 50K) and in 1976 earned his place in a dramatic "sudden death" trial race around the leafy lanes of Thorpe Bay. So, like Chris Maddocks, Paul appeared in 5 Olympic walking races. At Athens Paul became 1969 European Games 20K Champion and came 3rd in the 1971 European 20K at Helsinki. He made the Guinness Book of Records for winning 27 Senior UK athletics titles between 1963- 75. His sequence from 1967-to-1970 showed 138 races with just a solitary defeat - 1968 Olympic 50K in Mexico City's high altitude. World records bests came at 3K,5K, Track 20K & Road 30K. He was British Athlete-of-the Year in 1969 and held various UK records at distances from 1 Mile to 50K.

He's a former Race walking Association President and was guest speaker at the 2011 Centurions Centenary Dinner in the House of Commons. Total walking races = 600 (won 358). He also appeared in 164 running races (won 8). Paul was awarded an M.B.E. in 1976 for his services to sport. Paul's letter is elsewhere in this edition...and we all thank Paul for a wonderful and distinguished contribution to our race walking scene for so long. Thanks for the memories!
