With the many fine walks performances during this meet (see later in the newsletter) it was hard to pick who was the most outstanding but in my opinion two performances stood out. The Open 10,000m track walks closed out Day 6 and both wins were outstanding. Dane Bird-Smith won last year’s National men’s 10,000m racewalk with 38:44.61. This year, he improved a further 10 secs to win in an even better time of 38:34.23. Fellow Queenslander Katie Hayward at 16 became the youngest ever Australian 10,000m racewalk champion with her winning time of 45:51.09 in the women’s race. They are worthy co-Walkers of the Week. Dane Bird-Smith, Katie Hayward and Jess Pickles in Sydney at the Australian Open 10,000m Walk My updated All-Time rankings lists now show Australian men under 42 minutes and 21 women under 46 minutes. Our first round of "winter" walks were held in 29C broad sunlight, and it looks like next week might be a repeat. As a result, times for the longer distance were a bit slower than we would have liked. A good racing debut for Troy Hooker over 10km, and the warm conditions spoilt an opportunity to get under 60.

Nikola won the Little Athletics Victoria U14 1500m walk at their annual T&F Championships last weekend in a huge PB of 6:14.48. This was in fact only 1 second outside Troy Sundstrom’s 1995 Little Athletics U14 Australian Record of 6.13.4. What a walk! Nikola has been in great form all summer, after spending last winter absent from the sport. He won the Australian Schools T&F Championships U14 3000m in Canberra in December (PB 14:43), won the Victorian Country T&F Championships U16 3000m in January (PB 14:01) and won the Victorian T&F Championships U15 3000m a week ago (PB 13:56.10). He continues to go from strength to strength,. Doing PBs on just about every occasion. And well done to coach Elke Raselli who is doing a great job helping him develop. Nikola at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne last weekend (photos Jelena Mandic) WHAT'S COMING UP • Next weekend also sees the State Little Athletics T&F Championships for ACT, NSW, QLD, SA and WA.
