Moreno (Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, University of Granada, Spain, 2000), current position as Scientific Researcher in the Phytochemistry and Healthy Foods Laboratory of the Food Science and Technology Department at CEBAS-CSIC (Spanish National Research Council), member of the Research Group on the Quality, Safety and Bioactivity of Plant Foods (CSIC # 641446). Previous positions as CSIC Staff Scientist (2008–2018), postdoctoral associate in CEBAS-CSIC (2005-2007), and in the Raskin Lab at Rutgers University in New Jersey (USA), from 2001 to 2004. Research interests include foods of plant origin enriched in bioactive and bioavailable phytochemicals and nutrients (glucosinolates, polyphenolics, minerals, vitamins, etc.), designing integrated studies from plants to food and health, and the valorization of agro-food waste to obtain bioactives for industry. Author and coauthor of more than 170 papers in journals (S.C.I.; Scopus-ID 56962713400, h-index 33), Ph.D. adviser, and scientific coordinator and researcher in many competitive projects at the national and international level. Currently active R&D and innovation projects focused on the development of new functional beverages enriched with bioactive phytochemicals to modulate the energy metabolism (inflammation, glucose and lipid metabolism) and improve cognitive performance. The evidence presented in the participating papers is still not enough to demonstrate causality and functionality because the multifactorial conditions of the diseases (which are not related to a single effect or compound) are still a big challenge for this generation of scientists involved in the research of bioactives from foods for nutrition and health. The principle of “safety first” clearly drives the research on bioactive compounds of natural origin to be incorporated in food and feed formulas for health and wellbeing. Besides bioaccessibility and the demonstration of biological activity, it is clear that an early positive result in any new development would clear up any safety or toxicology issues. One example is the use of ginger rhizome in early pregnancy [1]. More research is needed regarding its efficacy and safety, even though the available data suggests that ginger is a safe and effective treatment for nausea and vomiting in women during early pregnancy [1]. On the other hand, daily food consumption could lead to unexpected exposure of contaminants, such as heavy metals, and the use of plant-derived food formulas could help in the reduction of damage in the human body through different mechanisms of detoxification, as in the use of Selenium-enriched rice grass juice to overcome Cadmium (Cd) contamination in foods [2], even though the evidence is generated in vitro and further developments are expected in the future. In Uruguay a considerable part of the national and international tourism and its related activities, rely on coastal zones. They are a particular landscape, important from a cultural perspective, inhabited by a significant proportion of the country’s population. Considering its geomorphological characteristics, coastal areas can be conceived as a vulnerable system. In particular in the Canelones Department (Uruguay), coastal zones, there are active cliffs, nearby housing and infrastructure with adverse effects on the landscape. The objective of this work was to quantify the vulnerability of the coastal zones of Canelones Department and to develop a geographical information system methodology to assess this damage, based on physical variables, demographics, land values and infrastructure proximity. This methodology was developed in PostGIS, complemented with GRASS GIS and GDAL libraries for the generation and processing of raster information. The methodology is reproducible and can be adapted to different coastal zones depending on the available information. In doing so, it brings forth three main ideas. The first is that of the pastoral city-state as a metaphor for the excessive centrality of Montevideo in a territory dominated by extensive livestock raising. The second and third look at the makings of rural marginality and the gradual transformation of Uruguay’s rural proletariat from semi-nomadic gauchos to sedentary peons as the result of the closing of two frontiers; a spatial frontier in the colonial period, and a technological frontier in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Malabarba3 and Iván González-Bergonzoni1 We describe a new species of a substrate-brooding Gymnogeophagus, based on coloration characters. The new species can be distinguished from the remaining substrate-brooding species in the genus by the unique pigmentation of the dorsal fin which consists of light blue, diagonal stripes over a red background in the spiny section and a combination of round, elliptic, and elongated bright blue spots over a red background in the soft section. It can be further distinguished from all other species of Gymnogeophagus by the following combination of characters: a discontinuous bright blue band above the upper lateral line in the humeral area, light blue roundish spots over a red to orange background on the anal fin, and conspicuous bright blue horizontal bands on body. The new species inhabits a wide range of freshwater habitats in the lower rio Uruguay basin, Rio de la Plata coastal drainages and Atlantic Ocean coastal drainages in Uruguay. Describimos una nueva especie de Gymnogeophagus con incubación de sustrato, en base a caracteres cromáticos. La nueva especie puede ser diferenciada de las restantes especies del género por la exclusiva pigmentación de la aleta dorsal, la que consiste de bandas oblicuas de color celeste sobre fondo rojo en la porción espinosa y una combinación de manchas redondas, elípticas, o alargadas azul brillantes sobre fondo rojo en la porción blanda.

España 1 RESUMEN Este trabajo se propone comprender las lógicas de la acción colectiva del movimiento agroecológico en Uruguay para lo cual se trabajará con colectivos organizados para la gestión de huertas comunitarias ubicados en la Costa de Oro, departamento de Canelones, Uruguay. Dicho movimiento está integrado por un arco heterogéneo de actores vinculados al trabajo con la tierra y a la producción de alimentos, quienes de modo particular, van apropiándose del territorio desarrollando acciones comunitarias y locales, al mismo tiempo que, integran iniciativas conexas y diversas de carácter nacional y transfronterizo adoptando el formato Red. La centralidad de su acción se concentra en la construcción de un proyecto alternativo y contrahegemónico que aboga por una transición Agroecológica, la que visualizan como resiliente, sustentable y mitigadora de los efectos del cambio climático. Se trata de un fenómeno vasto dado que postula una visión alternativa en las distintas esferas de la vida social; la económica, la filosófica y política, y la cultural.     ALTERACIONES DINÁMICAS EN ESPACIOS PERIURBANOS El caso de la Ruta 101 Autores: Salvador SCHELOTTO y Carolina LECUNA Facultad de Arquitectura – Universidad de la República Mails: [email protected]; [email protected] RESUMEN Este artículo trata de un cambio de mirada de un área geográfica enmarcada en el entorno de la Ruta 101, en el departamento de Canelones, Uruguay. Se trata de un territorio metropolitano que registra una acelerada transformación a partir de las alteraciones producidas por la creciente localización de actividades económicas: logísticas, comerciales e industriales, a partir de un soporte tradicionalmente rural. Un fenómeno que está generando un nuevo e inédito paisaje dinámico, que solapa distintas velocidades de cambios y evidencia en los distintos procesos el atributo más destacado de este nuevo paisaje, visto desde una visión sistémica del territorio y un enfoque de naturaleza proyectual que considera la especificidad vinculante y aplicada del paisaje. Palabras clave: Territorio, nuevas territorialidades, paisajes emergentes, impacto, pautas proyectuales. ABSTRACT. This article is a change of point of view by a geographic area framed in the environment of Route 101, in Canelones department. This is a metropolitan area that records a fast transformation because of alterations produced by the growing of economic activities in this location: logistics, commercial and industrial, in a traditionally rural support. A phenomenon that is creating a new and unprecedented dynamic landscape, overlapping different rates and evidence of changes in the various processes, is the most striking attribute of this new landscape, seen from a systemic view of the land and natural approach that considers the specific projective binding and applied of landscape.

[email protected] Resumen: Esta contribución brinda elementos sedimentológico-estratigráficos de los depósitos cuater- narios que aparecen en los acantilados y plataformas en la costa rioplatense del Departamento de Canelones, Uruguay. Se constató la presencia de depósitos regresivos e ingresivos cuaternarios, materializados por los sedimentos pleistocénicos transicionales de la Formación Chuy y los continentales de las formaciones Libertad y Dolores, así como los transicionales holocénicos de la Formación Villa Soriano. Se caracteriza litológicamente cada unidad, se interpretan los procesos actuantes y se hacen inferencias acerca de los ambientes de sedimentación involucrados.
