Gonyostomus elinae is a new species collected from the Caboclos region of São Paulo, Brazil, extending the distribution of the genus south to the cavern environ- ment of the central Atlantic rainforest. The new species differs from the other three species in the genus in having a different colour pattern of the shell, a wider um- bilicus, smoother sculpture, and a wider aperture having a straight inner lip. ABSTRACT Schistosomiasis remains a major parasitic disease, endemic in large parts of South America. Five neotropical species of Biomphalaria have been found to act as inter- mediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in natural populations, while others have been shown to be susceptible in experimental infections, although not found infected in the field. Among these potential intermediate hosts, Biomphalaria peregrina represents the most widespread species in South America, with confirmed occurrence records from Venezuela to northern Patagonia. In this study, we report the southernmost record for the species at the Pinturas River, in southern Patagonia, which finding implies a southward reassessment of the limit for the known species of this genus. The identities of the individuals from this population were confirmed through morphological examination, and by means of two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S-rRNA.     Revista Brasileira de Geociéncias 27(3):295-302, setembro de 1997 PRIMER REGISTRO DEL PALEOCENO EN EL URUGUAY: PALEOSUELOS CALCAREOS FOSILIFEROS EN LA CUENCA DE SANTA LUCIA SERGIO MARTÍNEZ ; GERARDO VEROSLAVSKY & MARIANO VERDE* ABSTRACT PALEOCENE FOSSILASSOCIATIONSIN CALCAREOUS PALEOSOLS FROM SANTA LUCIA BASIN (URUGUAY) For the first time, the Paleocene is recorded in Uruguay, developed at the central area of Santa Lucia Basin. It is represented by non depositional events, recognized as carbonatic paleosols, containing a characteristic fossil record. Up to date these carbonate deposits were included in the deposits known as "Calizas del Queguay" (Queguay Limestones), and considered as belonging to Mercedes Formation (Upper Cretaceous), interpreted as lacustrine facies laterally associated with sandstone and conglomérate fluvial facies. However, researches conducted by the authors have shown that these deposits are the product of calcretization processes that affected the Mercedes Formation clastic sedimentites. The calcareous, fossiliferous paleosols were developed overimposed at the top of the groundwater calcretes. The fossils found are: pulmonate gastropods (Eoborus charruanus), endocarps of Celtis santosi, rizoliths, and bee nests (Celliforma spp.). This association is typical of paleosols and the age of all the fossils is Tertiary. The gastropods have very similar representatives at the Paleocene of the São José de Itaboraí Basin (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), being the Uruguayan and Brazilian representatives of Eoborus the only species known of this genus. The Celtis santosi endocarps are present only at these two basins. Then, a Paleocene age is postulated for the paleosols and for the event of calcretization, developed under a warm and arid environment. F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. At macro-geographical scale more or less distinct clinal patterns are associated with basic macroclimatic

B. peregrina is widely distributed in South America and is considered a potential intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. We have reported the use of the polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA for the molecular identification of these snails. The snails were obtained from different localities of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The restriction patterns obtained with MvaI enzyme presented the best profile to identify the three species. The profiles obtained with all enzymes were used to estimate genetic similarities among B. oligoza, B. peregrina and B. orbignyi. This is also the first report of B. orbignyi in Uruguay. In particular in the Canelones Department (Uruguay), coastal zones, there are active cliffs, nearby housing and infrastructure with adverse effects on the landscape. The objective of this work was to quantify the vulnerability of the coastal zones of Canelones Department and to develop a geographical information system methodology to assess this damage, based on physical variables, demographics, land values and infrastructure proximity. This methodology was developed in PostGIS, complemented with GRASS GIS and GDAL libraries for the generation and processing of raster information. The methodology is reproducible and can be adapted to different coastal zones depending on the available information.
