This Week Mahsa Rahimi from Y10 Focuses on Iranian Film, the Salesman This week Mahsa Rahimi from Y10 focuses on Iranian film, The Salesman The Salesman is a 2016 drama written and directed by the academy award winning director of “A Separation”, Asghar Farhadi; starring Taraneh Alidoosti and Shahab Hosseini. It’s about a married couple [Emad and Rana] who perform Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman on stage, with Emad portraying Willy Loman and Rana playing Linda. Emad is also a popular instructor at a local school, where the youth joke about him being a "salesman." One night, their apartment begins to collapse and they flee the building with the other residents. Desperate to find a place to live, their fellow actor Babak secures another apartment for them, where a woman has recently moved out, although she left in a hurry abandoning numerous belongings. One night, Rana is home alone and begins bathing. When Emad returns, he finds she is missing and the bathroom is covered with blood. He rushes to the hospital, where he is informed by his neighbours about his wife's condition and is told to change the apartment's locks. It becomes apparent that Rana has not had an accident, but has been assaulted by an intruder. Emad also learns from neighbours that the previous tenant was a prostitute, who had conflicts with her clients. The incident leaves Emad determined to find the perpetrator over his wife's traumatized objections. In my opinion The Salesman is compelling from beginning to end. And using Arthur Miller's iconic play, The Death of a Salesman, works so well to comment on these character's dreams, failings, nobility and humanity. The Salesman is a foreign language drama film, originally filmed in Persian(also known as Farsi) however, it does have subtitles in various languages. This film is also an award winning film from the talented Iranian director. It has won 2 Cannes Film awards for best actor, and best screenplay. It also won an Oscar award for the Best Foreign Language Film in the Oscar ceremony, 26th February where he was absent and his friend, Anousheh Ansari, known as the first female space tourist, and Firouz Naderi, a former director of Solar System Exploration at NASA – represented him at the Oscars ceremony. .

IRANIAN WOMEN’S QUEST FOR SELF-LIBERATION THROUGH THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA: AN EMANCIPATORY PEDAGOGY TANNAZ ZARGARIAN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO December 2019 © [Tannaz Zargarian, 2019] i Abstract This dissertation examines the discourse of body autonomy among Iranian women. It approaches the discourse of body autonomy by deconstructing veiling, public mobility, and sexuality, while considering the impact of society, history, religion, and culture. Although there are many important scholarly works on Iranian women and human rights that explore women’s civil rights and freedom of individuality in relation to the hijab, family law, and sexuality, the absence of work on the discourse of body autonomy—the most fundamental human right—has created a deficiency in the field. My research examines the discourse of body autonomy in the context of liberation among Iranian women while also assessing the role of the internet as informal emancipatory educational tools. To explore the discourse of body autonomy, I draw upon critical and transnational feminist theory and the theoretical frameworks of Derayeh, Foucault, Shahidian, Bayat, Mauss, and Freire. Additionally, in-depth semi-structured interviews with Iranian women aged 26 to 42 in Iran support my analysis of the practice and understanding of body autonomy personally, on the internet, and social media. The results identify and explicate some of the major factors affecting the practice and awareness of body autonomy, particularly in relation to the goal of liberation for Iranian women.

  • Iranian Women in the Year 1400: the Struggle for Equal Rights Continues
ISSUE BRIEF Iranian Women in the Year 1400: The Struggle for Equal Rights Continues APRIL 2021 MEHRANGIZ KAR AND AZADEH POURZAND You want to erase my being, but in this land I shall remain I will continue to dance as long as I sustain I speak as long as I’m living; fury, roar, and revolt your stones and rocks I fear not, I’m flood, my flow you can’t halt — Poet Simin Behbahani1 The story of Iranian women’s struggle for equality in many ways embodies the nation’s struggles as a whole. It is a tale of continuous bargaining with the state by citizens of diverse backgrounds. While Iranian women have made remarkable strides in various fields such as science, the arts, and business, they continue to face discriminatory laws, policies, and practices in their daily lives and beyond. The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI), Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, sought to maintain a strictly controlled society using religious-populist lead- ership accompanied by repression. Yet no degree of state control has suc- ceeded in shutting down society’s aspirations for a better and freer life, and the women’s movement in Iran is a dramatic example of the state’s failure. This issue brief aims to present a clearer image of women’s struggles for equal- ity to help US policy makers better understand the intricacies of Iranian soci- ety and design policies that support—but do not supplant or undermine—the women’s movement. Understanding this struggle can help policy makers look beyond simplistic solutions that see disempowered Iranian women as requiring saving from the outside or that use women’s achievements as a justification to legitimize IRI rule.

  • Imes Alumni Newsletter
IMES ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 2015 Winter 6, Issue From the Head of IMES By Anthony Gorman Welcome again to the latest IMES Alumni Newsletter! As usual, this winter issue provides details of the IMES MSc and PhD graduations last November, always an emotional occasion for the department as well as for the graduating students themselves. The last months have been busy in the department with many enjoyable academic and social occasions. The Watt event in October which marked the 50th anniversary of Montgomery Watt’s inaugural lecture as Professor of Islamic Studies at Edinburgh stands out as a particularly memorable occasion marked by an impressive evening of lectures and a symposium the following day. Other highlights were a short series of seminars on Shi’ism (part of the larger IMES Research seminar series) as well as the programme of the Alwaleed Centre. As usual we feature a number of contributions from current and former students as well as coverage of the social activities of the postgraduate student body. One particularly impressive feature is the translation - into English and Slovene - of the poetry of Ashraf Fayadh by our PhD student Jona Fras. The History of IMES column is also dedicated to the student presence in the department. Since I have recently stepped down as Head of IMES I will also be vacating the post of Editor of the Newsletter. My thanks to all that have contributed to its production over the last three years, Professor especially to a series of fine Assistant Editors, Emese Lorencsics, Fayaz Alibhai, Farshed Kazemi Carole and, for her very capable work on this issue, Hester Gartrell.
