Your Southern Supply Base
Dunedin Your Southern Supply Base Dunedin is the leading site for a supply base, logistics provider and support centre for the offshore and onshore oil industry in the Great South Basin and East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Dunedin – Supply Base The Dunedin supply base is situated at the head of the deep and sheltered Otago Harbour. At present, laydown areas, wharf space and bunkering facilities already exist. Provedoring, marine repair and servicing facilities are also currently available. Looking to the future, the Dunedin City Council and Port Otago own a significant amount of land in this area and have identified it for redevelopment with provisions already in place to allow for this. Planning is underway for the construction of an International Logistics Hub and Offshore Supply Base to support the oil industry in the southern part of New Zealand. The aim of my PhD thesis was to improve our knowledge on the phylogenetic significance and functional morphologies of unionoid shell characters; or in other words, to answer the question “Why does a mussel look the way it does?”. A good understanding of morphological differences between and within species is not only needed to resolve unanswered questions on unionoid evolution but can also be helpful for other fields of research, including palaeontology, ecology and conservation of these highly threatened animals. Intraspecific patterns in shell morphologies and their use for palaeontological reconstructions If we knew which environmental conditions or other fac- tors a given shell morphotype is associated with, we could reconstruct a mussel’s (former) habitat and/or biological characteristics by merely looking at its shell. Taxa produc- ing hard parts that persist in sedimentary deposits can addi- tionally be used to recover information about ancient popu- lations and environments. Unfortunately, our incomplete understanding of which factors cause which patterns in morphology has so far limited the use of unionoids in such reconstructions of both the present and the past. This is where I come in: Applying a novel morphometric tech- nique (Fourier shape analysis), I detected the first consis- tent habitat-associated trend in shell shape (Zieritz & Aldridge, 2009). -

The first observations of Ischnochiton (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) movement behaviour, with comparison between habitats differing in complexity Kiran Liversage1 and Kirsten Benkendorff2 1 Estonian Marine Institute, University of Tartu, Tallinn, Estonia 2 Marine Ecology Research Centre, Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, Australia ABSTRACT Most species of Ischnochiton are habitat specialists and are almost always found underneath unstable marine hard-substrata such as boulders. The difficulty of experimenting on these chitons without causing disturbance means little is known about their ecology despite their importance as a group that often contributes greatly to coastal species diversity. In the present study we measured among-boulder distributional patterns of Ischnochiton smaragdinus, and used time-lapse photography to quantify movement behaviours within different habitat types (pebble substrata and rock-platform). In intertidal rock-pools in South Australia, I. smaragdinus were significantly overdispersed among boulders, as most boulders had few individuals but a small proportion harboured large populations. I. smaragdinus individuals emerge from underneath boulders during nocturnal low-tides and move amongst the inter-boulder matrix (pebbles or rock-platform). Seventy-two percent of chitons in the pebble matrix did not move from one pebble to another within the periods of observation (55–130 min) but a small proportion moved across as many as five pebbles per hour, indicating a capacity for adults to migrate among disconnected habitat
