For over twenty years the New Forest village of Netley Marsh has been an important host for young people across Europe, who have joined livelihoods development charity Tools for Self Reliance for a life enriching 12 month placement. Each year as part of the Erasmus+ exchange programme funded by the European Union, up to four young people have joined the team to learn a broad range of practical tools based skills, whilst working alongside the team of daily workshop volunteers to refurbish tools and pack them into kits, ready to be shipped to vocational training projects in Africa. Great and lasting friendships have been formed over the years between the daily and European volunteers who have enjoyed the opportunity to work and socialise with people from different generations. Both young and older volunteers love the opportunity to share their skills and time with each other, enjoying bowls, curry nights and archery to name a few of the many social activities outside of the workshop. “It’s good to interact with young people and have a laugh and joke. Their enthusiasm is infectious” Jim, a long standing workshop volunteer. left to right: Stuart Hookey, Last year 19 year old Felix from Germany joined the local barbershop choir, Ocean Harmony, who meet for their weekly Stuart Bailey, Noël Clausen, practise at Colbury Memorial Hall. One of Felix’s highlights whilst in the UK was joining his new friends to perform on stage Florian Schwarzmayr and at the National Barbershop Convention in Harrogate! Felix Dedek After their placement European volunteers return home with greater self confidence, a breadth of practical skills and knowledge, improved English language skills and new friendships. Their year living and volunteering in Netley Marsh has empowered them with the tools to confidently decide on their next endeavours. Tools for Self Reliance is a UK based registered charity. Our mission is to reduce poverty in Africa by helping people build sustainable livelihoods through the provision of tools and training. After school club From Thursday 28th February, staff at Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve, Totton will be running a weekly after school club for children aged 5-11 and their grown-ups for the second year. Families can experience nature throughout the seasons with the Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust. Learn about wildlife, gain practical skills and have a chance to play in the great outdoors. Activities will include: den building, fire lighting, campfire cooking, bird watching, bug hunting, map reading, pond dipping, woodcraft and more. Linda Seekings, who runs the club says “I ran this club throughout 2018 and was great to see the same families each week. The children helped to come up with ideas of what we could make and do. We created all sorts of fantastic things from natural materials, experimented with different campfire cooking ideas as well as looking at the wildlife around us. It was great for them to see the seasonal changes in the woods, meadows and ponds.” The club will run from 3.45pm till 5.15pm every Thursday. Booking is essential. Phone 02380 667929 or email [email protected] Each session costs £6.50 per child.
