The liquor is mostly prepared using the indigenous knowledge of the tribal community. The uniqueness of the liquor lies in the application of Bakhar, an amylolytic starter culture. Although, the preparation of Bakhar differs from community to community but ~42 species of ethno-botanically important plants are mostly used. The microbial consortia are naturally outsourced from rice and herbs used for the preparation of Bakhar. The amylolytic starter culture consistently generates maltooligosaccharides, which is a low calorie ingredient, less sweet and viscous, capable of retaining ample quantity of water within it. Besides, serving the purpose of a beverage, Haria can compensate the loss of water in the human system under extreme high temperature. Together with this, the drink also serves as a remedy for several acute and chronic diseases which may be due to the use of certain medicinal herbs as starter culture. The inoculated rice is poured into cone shaped bamboo basket. An earthenware pot is placed under the cone to collect the fermented liquid. The liquid is transferred to new boiled rice successively for three or four times. The liquid finally collected becomes the first quality ruhi . Nature of fermentation: Alcoholic fermentation. Microorganism(s) involved: Rhizopus , Mucor , yeast and Lactic Acid Bacteria. Whether native fermentation or inoculum is added: Mixed organisms (from rice and nosan leaves) are inoculated. Changes in physical and chemical profile: Ethanol content ranges from 12-14% v/v, the pH is about 4.0 reducing sugars are 2.5% w/v with total sugar being 3.0% w/v. INTRODUCTION Conservation of Biodiversity has become the most important requirement of the present day world. This is because survival of the man depends upon the biodiversity. Biodiversity consists of two components: richness, or taxonomic diversity, and evenness, or the distribution of individuals among taxa. Anthropogenic factors are eroding both the richness as well as evenness components of the biodiversity, jeopardizing the survival of human race itself. This realization has initiated serious efforts towards conservation of both the components of biodiversity. One of the causes for the erosion of biodiversity has been recognized to be the mining activity. Some of the important minerals of our country are lying below the forests. Opencast mining of such areas are bound to result in the destruction or fragmentation of the habitat. If the area under mining is not having any endemic species then the mining will result only in the reduction in the gene pool, i.e. the evenness component of the biodiversity. However, mining an area with endemic species will have more drastic effect on biodiversity. Similarly, if the area falls under crucial migratory route of a species then also the mining may have some impact on such migratory species. Thus, it is required to evaluate the area, going to be mined, for any endemic and endangered species and any direct or indirect impact on biodiversity. Mining is required for development. Then, is the mining antithesis of development? No, it cannot be, provided sufficient measures are taken to offset the impact on biodiversity.

These index numbers, apart from being utilized for fixation and revision of wages, determination of variable Dearness Allowances, are also utilized as an indicator for measuring inflationary trend in the country and for policy formulations. These index numbers are compiled by the Bureau on month to month basis and are disseminated through Press Release, Monthly Index Letters, Indian Labour Journal and Website (www.labourbureau.gov.in). However, despite regular dissemination of these index numbers through various forms of media, there has been a growing demand over the years from users for more detailed/serial data vis-à-vis what is published through the ILJ and other publications of the Bureau.
