Drawing on data which includes countries in which there exists no or little information about representations of the Holocaust, the study shows where the Holocaust is established in official guidelines, and contains a close HOLOCAUST THE textbook study, focusing on the comprehensiveness and accuracy of representations and historical narratives. The book highlights evolving practices worldwide and thus provides education THE INTERNATIONAL stakeholders with comprehensive documentation about current trends in curricula directives and textbook representations of the Holocaust. Historical understandings of the Holocaust are defined in terms of the spatial and temporal scales with which the event is portrayed, the protagonists involved, interpretative patterns (according to definitions, comprehensiveness, causes, relativization or banalization), narrative techniques and viewpoints, didactic methods, and national idiosyncrasies. The study is based on 272 currently valid curricula from 135 countries, and on 89 textbooks published in 26 countries since 2000. The aim of the study is primarily to document information in such a way that it reflects local understandings of the Holocaust, principally by recording concepts and narratives of the Holocaust found in educational media currently in use in schools. The findings show both convergence and divergence in the representations analysed. The Holocaust is subject to shared patterns of representation, which include selectivity, personalization, appropriation, screening and omission. It is also subject to narrative idiosyncrasies. One of the main trends worldwide is domestication, a process whereby countries place emphasis on the local significance of the event or appropriate them in the interests of local populations. Drawing on such national and international patterns of representation, the publication concludes by formulating recommendations for future curricula and textbook narratives about the Holocaust. These recommendations relate to such issues as the use of terms, the comprehensiveness of historical facts, the definition of causes, the combination of universal and local approaches, and the development of historical literacy. 3 Acknowledgements This report was compiled and written in 2014 by Peter Carrier (principal investigator), Eckhardt Fuchs (project leader) and Torben Messinger (project coordinator). Whilst the former was written/drawn during the Thatcher years, the film adaptation has claimed the work as a herald for an alternative viewpoint thus pitting the original intent of the book with the sociological events of post 9/11 United States. Taking the original text as a basis for contrast, I have relied also on Professor James Keller‟s work V for Vendetta as Cultural Pastiche with which to enunciate what I consider to be lacunae in the film interpretation and to understand the reasons for the alterations undertaken from the book to the screen version. An attempt has also been made to correlate Alan Moore‟s original influences into the medium of a film made with a completely different political and cultural agenda.

    INDIVIDUAL PROFILE CARDS UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM Faiga (Fanny) Orenbach was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Łódź, Poland. The family moved to Brussels, Belgium when she was a young child, where her parents became active in the Jewish community. Fanny earned a art degree and designed clothing for the Royal House of Belgium. In May 1938, Fanny married Jacques Aizenberg, and less than a year later, gave birth to a daughter, Josiane. Germany invaded Belgium on May 10, 1940. Jacques left immediately to join the military, and after Belgium was defeated, he evacuated to England. Although she was Jewish, Fanny soon became actively involved in the resistance movement, hiding refugees in her attic. In October 1942, a few months after Fanny’s father was arrested, Fanny put Josiane in hiding. Fanny and her mother, Rivke, also went into hiding, but the Gestapo discovered and arrested them in 1943. They were beaten and taken to the Mechelen (Malines) transit camp. After ten days in Mechelen, Fanny and Rivke were deported to Auschwitz. Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Fanny and Rivke were placed in separate lines. Fanny Orenbach Aizenberg Fanny never saw her mother again. Fanny found encouragement from a group of six women. Together, they endured beatings, forced labor in a grenade factory, cruel and painful medical experiments, and the many other Born 1916 horrors of Auschwitz. Łódź, Poland In January 1945, the SS evacuated Auschwitz, sending Fanny and tens of thousands of prisoners on a forced march in frozen temperatures. After four months, Fanny and the other survivors were liberated near the Elbe River by the Soviet Red Army.

    Chapter 14 Natan Rapoport’s Soviet Style of the Yad Mordechai and Negba Memorials 14.1 Ghetto Heroism and Israeli Valor The very same year of the Herzl gravesite competition, art critic Eugen Kolb met Russian-Jewish sculptor Natan Rapoport (mentioned in chapter 8) in Tel- Aviv. The meeting resulted in an article in which he shared basic, primary ideas about the nature of future Israeli memorials: At a time that many among us begin to design memorials for our War of Independence … Kibbutz Yad Mordechai did well in taking upon itself the initiative to entrust Natan Rapoport with the mission of erect- ing the suitable memorial for the Kibbutz Fallen and to the hero of the Warsaw Ghetto, whose name was adopted by that kibbutz—Mordechai Anilewizc.1 Connecting the Warsaw Ghetto fighters with those of Israel’s Independence War was a popular contemporary Zionist concept. Idit Zartal explains it as wishing to integrate the Ghetto uprisings into the narrative of Israel’s Independence War, one link in a chain of battles for the Land of Israel. It would show that the Diaspora Jews participated in the fight for a Jewish State and that the Zionist struggle for the Jewish state meant life or death. It associated the destiny of European Jewry with the right for the establishment of a Jewish state after World War II.2 Kolb’s great admiration for Natan Rapoport is quite understandable in this context; The Russian sculptor arrived in Israel a few days after the unveiling of his memorial to the Warsaw ghetto uprising in Warsaw (April 19, 1949).

    how it Happened Here: An Introduction by David Robinson Every viewing of It Happened Here, I find, requires the same adjustment. You always prepare yourself to make allowances, to be indulgent because, after all, it is only an amateur film, made on half a shoestring – schoolboys’ pocket-money virtually – with the barest of technical resources and volunteer personnel who came and went as the shooting stretched on. Yet within the first few minutes, practically within the first few shots, you find that allowances and indulgences are quite misplaced, because what you are seeing is simply a good film at any level and by any standards. As sheer professional filmcraft it is admirable. The staging of the war and the war period have a conviction which eludes more glossy and expensive ‘historical’ productions. The narrative structure is loose and casual, which makes it all the more remarkable that the film has a dramatic drive which carries through from the first shot to the last. The credit titles are backed with martial music. Then, over an animated map of the British Isles, the voice of John Snagge sketches in the ‘historical’ background which is the premise of the film: ‘The German invasion of England took place in July 1940 after the British retreat from Dunkirk. Strongly resisted at first, the German army took many months to restore order. But the resistance movement, lacking outside support, was finally crushed. For three years it lay dormant. Collaboration increased as the population became adjusted to the tedium of occupation... Then, in 1944, the resistance movement reappeared ...’ The heroine, Pauline Murray, is one of the population trying to adjust to the circumstances of occupation.
