ighty-five years ago, a group of visionaries gathered to form the first business cham- ber for the burgeoning E Uptown neighbor- hood that was quickly becoming an entertain- ment and recreational destination for resi- dents citywide and beyond. One was the owner of an upscale depart- ment store who coined the tony term Uptown; the other, a real estate agent who developed Uptown’s surrounding residential streets, some of which are national and city landmarks today. A few years later in 1925, the board of directors changed the cham- ber’s name to the Central Uptown Chicago Association, as the neighborhood added more retail, movie palaces (The ) and ballrooms (Arcadia, Aragon). As the country persevered through a depression and world war, so did the neighborhood chamber, which settled on the name Uptown Chamber of Commerce in 1955. The chamber’s boundaries were expanded in 1987 to Irving Park, Lake Michigan, Foster and Ravenswood. In 2005, the organization updated its name to Business Partners, The Chamber for Uptown, to bet- ter reflect its mission of working in partnership with neighborhood business owners and other stakeholders by providing technical assistance and other services. Like our founders in 1923, Business Partners, The Chamber for Uptown, remains Uptown’s biggest booster and is committed to carrying forth our founders’ mantle through Uptown’s exciting revival.

ptown has been called the most Chicago of Chicago’s neighborhoods. One of the most ethnically and U culturally diverse neighbor- hoods in the city and the country, Uptown is full of history. It rose out of swamp- land, marshy and wet until shortly after the Civil War. Its beaches and lakeshore rec- reation made Uptown ppopular withwith Chicagoans in the late 19th19th CentuCentury.ry Chicago annexed Uptown in 1889. Elev ated train service came in 1900. By the Roaring Twenties, Uptown was the Gold Coast, with 11 theaters, 36 hotels, dozens of well- to-do residences and world-class shopping rivaling downtown Chicago’s. • • • Before Hollywood, Chicago was the nation’s motion picture capital, and Uptown was at its epi- ccenter. At 1345 W Argyle St. was the Essanay Manufacturing Company, home of the country’s most productive film studio. Founded in 1907, Essanay produced a number of . Gloria Swanson, who lived in Uptown as a teenager, did film extra work at Essanay. The studio campus is today home to St. Augustine College, the Midwest’s only bilingual institution of higher ededucation.uca St. Augustine’s mamainin aauditoriumuditorium is nnamedamed afte er Charlie Chaplin. • • • Great music also defines Uptown. Built in 1914, the Green Mill, at 4802 N. Broadway, is America’s old- est jazz club. Chaplin may have tipped a few beers at the Green Mill, which still features live music today and continues to play a vital role in Uptown’s entertainment community. A block away at 1106 W.

2008-2009 UPTOWN 12 COMMUNITY GUIDE Lawrence is the historic Aragon Ballroom, which was built in 1926 and then quickly became the best-known dance hall in the country. Al Capone was an Aragon regular. A young Frank Sinatra got his break at the Aragon. • • • Uptown has had its share of tough times, too. Its housing, as that in many communities, suffered in the decade after World War II. In 1960, about a quarter of Uptown’s older, historic residential buildings were wiped out by fire. • • • In recent years, Uptown has seen the beginnings of a great revival. Hollywood has rediscovered Uptown, with a number of major film productions being shot here, most recently Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp. In a community where historic preservation efforts are at the fore- front now, the film industry finds the allure of Uptown’s architecture and streets irresistible. It’s not difficult to find a building or street in Uptown that has been featured in the scene of at least one major motion picture. • • • A walk through Uptown today brings the thrill of discovery around nearly every corner—from the clean, modern lines of the former Aon Insurance (now Ace Insurance) building at 5050 N. Broadway to the broad-shouldered grace of the Uptown Bank Building, 4753 N. Broadway, which is home today to Bridgeview Bank. Other gems include the histor- ic Uptown Theatre building at 4816 N. Broadway. Built in 1925, it boasted “an acre of seating.” It closed in 1981, and has since been used to film scenes in major motion pictures. Even unused, however, Uptown Theatre remains a visual wonder in a neighborhood full of them. Indeed, if you stroll down any residential side street, you’re sure to see well-preserved historic build- ings still being used as they were originally intended.

During its heyday, the Aragon was a major stop on the big band circuit, featuring all the top names of the big band era: Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Xavier Cugat, Lawrence Welk, Kay Kyser, , Sammy Kaye and Duke Ellington, to name a few. A fire in an adjacent cocktail lounge in 1958 forced the Aragon to close for sev- eral months. Diminished crowds led to the end of regular dancing in 1964. The Aragon went through various incar- nations as an ice skating rink and a boxing venue. Since the 1960s, the Aragon has staged marathon rock shows featuring the likes of the , Jethro Tull and more. It opened in 1925 and was an important addition to Uptown’s entertainment dis- trict. The 4,300-seat movie theater featured a full-time 34-piece orchestra and employed a staff of 130, including a nurse and fire marshal. Elaborate stage shows would accompany each movie. As movie crowds dimin- ished, the Uptown Theatre stopped showing movies in the 1960s, but was revived in the 1970s as a venue for rock shows. The theater was closed to regular events in 1981. Efforts are under way to restore the theater, with pieces of the terra cotta façade catalogued for future restoration. The Uptown Theatre figures prominently on the National Register for Historic Places and other landmark lists.

Uptown Broadway Building 4707 N. Broadway When terra cotta was king, this 1927 Spanish baroque gem was designed by Walter W. Ahlschlager. Today, this vintage building is lovingly being restored by developer Thaddeus Wong and features more than 20,000 square feet of retail and office space on three floors. Wong is searching for a bar or lounge to lease the building’s lower level to add another entertainment venue to the neighborhood, with high-end retail tenants and professionals to occupy the building’s other commercial and office space. The building will be open to new tenants before the end of 2008. Human faces, animal heads, foliage, columns and ribbons in yellow and gray bedeck the building’s façade, an example of the pre-Depression era’s fascination with ornamentaion. Alternatives Bricolage Mural 4730 N. Sheridan This whimsical bricolage mural using pieces of colored glass graces the front of Alternatives Inc., an all-service agency for children and their families on Chicago’s North Side. The mural was created through a partnership with the Chicago Public Art Group as a summer employment program for youth. Featuring children playing, along with inspirational words of peace and friendship, this colorful mural has come to symbolize Uptown’s diversity and is a traffic-stopper along Sheridan Road.

U.S. Post Offi ce, Uptown Station 4850 N. Broadway Designed by Howard L. Cheney in 1939, this modern post office was a project of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Works in Progress Administration. Granite eagles guard at the entrance, where inside murals by Henry Varnum Poor depict Carl Sandburg (a resident of neighboring Ravenswood) and Louis H. Sullivan, who holds a model of the original Carson Pirie Scott store. Graceland Cemetery 4001 N. Clark This large, Victorian-era cemetery was established in 1860 by Chicago attorney Thomas Bryan. Bryan purchased the original 80 acres and commissioned prominent landscape architect H.W.S. Cleveland to design the park-like ambiance. Graceland’s original southern boundary was Irving Park Road, but was later expanded eastward and northwest to its present size of 119 acres. The Victorian park atmosphere was enhanced by Ossian Simonds, who used native plants for landscaping. Graceland is the resting place for such Chicago pantheon as Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Potter Palmer, Marshall Field and George Pullman.
