It has been a few years since the publication of the first edition of Spectro Scientific’s In-Service Oil Analysis Handbook. Our original goal was to compile a comprehensive reference book of common in-service oil analysis techniques to help readers understand and choose the right technique and instrumentation for their needs. We had to limit the scope in the first two editions because of the amount of effort needed to cover all the topics. In-service oil analysis for condition based maintenance covers a wide array of topics. I am pleased to say that in this third edition, we are much closer to our goal. We reorganized the structure of the content for better clarity and we added articles to cover more topics and instruments associated with oil analysis. Also, we rewrote several articles including the latest developments on the market. As we learned more from our customers about their successes using on site oil analysis, we developed case studies that you can find in this edition. 1 Small Engine Parts and Operation INTRODUCTION The small engines used in lawn mowers, garden tractors, chain saws, and other such machines are called internal combustion engines. In an internal combustion engine, fuel is burned inside the engine to produce power. The internal combustion engine produces mechanical energy directly by burning fuel. In contrast, in an external combustion engine, fuel is burned outside the engine. A steam engine and boiler is an example of an external combustion engine. The boiler burns fuel to produce steam, and the steam is used to power the engine. An external combustion engine, therefore, gets its power indirectly from a burning fuel. In this course, you’ll only be learning about small internal combustion engines. A “small engine” is generally defined as an engine that pro- duces less than 25 horsepower. In this study unit, we’ll look at the parts of a small gasoline engine and learn how these parts contribute to overall engine operation. A small engine is a lot simpler in design and function than the larger automobile engine. However, there are still a number of parts and systems that you must know about in order to understand how a small engine works. The most important things to remember are the four stages of engine operation. Memorize these four stages well, and everything else we talk about will fall right into place. Therefore, because the four stages of operation are so important, we’ll start our discussion with a quick review of them. We’ll also talk about the parts of an engine and how they fit into the four stages of operation. -

In view of this I would like to share some knowledge onhow we can save cost in maintaining our vehicle, and I believe that this relevant information must be known by every Filipino specially those who own a vehicle. One of the regular maintenance we perform on our vehicle is changing oil, and many of us are unaware of synthetic lubricants. Regardless of which brand of fuel is used, foreign particles are suspended in the motor oil. Heavy accumulation of particles on high temperature zones such as on piston rings, exhaust valve guides, may result in stuck piston rings and valves due to burning and coking of the oil. On turbocharged engine, failing to ensure an adequate cool-down period prior to shut-off may lead to particle deposits on the turbocharger wheels. This could result in an unbalance of the turbo wheel and consequently to a complete destruction of the turbocharger. Particle deposits or cooking may become loose in the engine and may block the lubrication system causing damage to the engine due to lack of oil. -

The currently produced cylinder deactivation engines utilize fixed-type cylinder deactivation in which only a fixed number of cylinders are deactivated. As fixed-type cylinder deactivation has some shortcomings, variable-type cylinder deactivation with no limit on the number of deactivated cylinders is under research. For variable-type cylinder deactivation, control is more complicated and production cost is higher than fixed-type cylinder deactivation. Therefore, it is necessary to select the cylinder deactivation control method considering both advantages and disadvantages of the two control methods. In this study, a fuel economy prediction simulation model was created using the measurement data of various vehicles with engine displacements of 1.0–5.0 L. The fuel economy improvement of fixed-type cylinder deactivation was compared with that of variable-type cylinder deactivation using the created simulation. -

ARTICLE 3 April 21, 2017 Flow Testing and Evaluation In this article, we are going to start looking at a few performance services that are available at MAX BMW. Specifically, we’ll look at an overview of cylinder head performance through flow testing and evaluation. With any machine shop work, the proper tools are essential when exacting results and a high standard of quality are required. One of those tools is our Super Flow SF600 cylinder head flow bench. 2 When building an engine where more power is desired, everything in the engine must be considered to be working together as a package. The starting point for any project is always understanding its intended use. Are you building a stock engine, a high horse power street bike or perhaps a track-only bike that sees sustained high rpms and loads? Once this is determined, the details to achieve these goals fall into place. Specifically, engine displacement, cam selection, cylinder head improvements such as valve size and material, valve seat machining and port design are all areas that can be modified and tuned for performance improvements. Even though there have been volumes written on air flow theory and port design, this will be a brief overview to help understand how it can all be measured, modified and tested to prove effective results.
