Herb-based medicine from ancient times have played a vital role in ailments of various disease and nowadays it has been a particular area of interest in medicine. Phytochemicals are inherent compounds derived from plants that are biologically active, non-nutritive chemicals that act as a defensive or prophylactic medicine in humans. Their extracts have proven to show inhibition properties against different microbes. Despite the prevalence of Cyperus species and their traditional use in medicine, the chemical components responsible for their attributes remain largely unknown. This thesis research compared ten species of sedges (Cyperus rotundus, Cyperus esculentus, Cyperus diffusus, Cyperus involucratus, Cyperus helferi, Cyperus prolixus, Cyperus papyrus, Cyperus surinamensis, Cyperus hortensis, Cyperus squarrosus) with respect to their phytochemical constituents by examining their chemical profiles using HPLC. Methanol-based leaf and root extracts between species were shown to have significantly unique phytochemicaJ profiles, with many extracts containing phytochemicals that support mammalian health (e.g. asiatic acid). In addition, comparing fresh plant extracts with dried samples (historical specimens) revealed that some of the phytochemical components appeared to be reasonably stable over decades. This study also examined antimicrobial properties of extracts fromthese plants, although results were inconclusive due to solvent incompatibility with either the phytochemicals or microbial species. Its main use, however, was for the production of laminated leaves which served as writing material in the Mediterranean world for almost 5000 years. Being a royal monopoly, the manufacturing process was kept secret. PI~us Secundus, who first described this process, is unclear as to the adhesive forces bonding the individual papyrus strips together. Various authors of the past century advanced their own interpretation on bonding. The present authors believe that the natural juices of the papyrus strip are sufficient to bond the individual strips into a sheet, and that any additional paste used was for the sole purpose of pasting the individual dried papyrus sheets into a scroll. RESUMEN.-EI papiro (Cyperus papyrus, Cyperaceae) fue una planta de uso multiple en el antiguo Egipto. Su uso principal era la produccion de hojas lami­ nadas que sirvieron como material de escritura en el mundo meditarraneo durante casi 5000 anos. Plinius Secundus, quien describio este proceso por primera vez, no deja claro que fuerzas adhesivas mantenlan unidas las tiras individuales de papiro. Three families of graminoid monocots have a worldwide distribution and are prominent members of north temperate and boreal regions of the world: (1) Cyperaceae (sedges, tules, papyrus, and relatives), (2) Juncaceae (rushes and wood-rushes), and, especially, (3) Poaceae (grasses). In addition to use in cosmetics and perfumery, the plant also has medicinal and pharmacological properties. Among the pharmacological properties are the antimalarial, sedative, hepatoprotective, contraceptive effects on the central nervous system (CNS), insecticide, antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, anthococcosis. The metabolites found related to the mentioned activities were cyperotundone, alpha-cyperone, mustacone for antimalarial activity in the chloroform extract of the priprioca rhizomes.

This is a work in perpetual progress, a personal learning tool, full uv misstakes, & written as a personal means instead of a public end. CYPERACEAE Sauergrasgewächse SEDGES, aka BIESIES, SEGGEN Formally described in 1789 by De Jussieu. The family name is derived from the genus name Cyperus, from the Greek kupeiros, meaning sedge. Many species are grass-like, being tufted, with long, thin, narrow leaves, jointed stems, & branched inflorescence of small flowers, & are horticulturally lumped with grasses as graminoids. Archer (2005) suggests the term graminoid be used for true grasses, & cyperoid be used for sedges. (If physical anthropologists have hominoids & hominids, why don’t we have graminoids & graminids?) There are approximately 104 genera, 4 subfamilies, 14 tribes, & about 5000 species worldwide, with 27 genera & 843 species in North America (Ball et al 2002).

    Solution sheet Sedge // The Problem Sedges, nutsedges and kyllingas all belong to the Sedge (Cyperaceae) family and are commonly referred to collectively as ‘sedges’. Sedges are one of the most common and hard-to-control warm-season turf weeds superintendents have to deal with. There are many different species present in warm-season turf, most are in the genus Cyperus, while kyllingas are in the genus Kyllinga. Sedges can be broken down into three main groups, with the important sedges in each listed below. Nutsedges — Perennial sedges that form nutlets or tubers in the soil // Yellow nut sedge (Cyperus esculentus) // Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) Rhizomatous kyllingas — Tend to form mats, can be perennial or annual // Green kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia) // Cock’s comb kyllinga (Kyllinga squamulata) // False-green kyllinga (Kyllinga gracillima) Non-tuberous sedges — Can be perennial or annual // Annual or annual flat sedge (Cyperus compressus) // Globe sedge (Cyperus croceus) // Fragrant or annual kyllinga (Kyllinga sesquiflorus) // Surinam sedge (Cyperus surinamensis) // Cylindric sedge (Cyperus retrorus) // Texas sedge (Cyperus polystachyos) What To Look For Sedges tend to show up in patches on golf courses. Most sedges prefer wet areas and are found in areas with poor drainage. Some sedges can tolerate low mowing while other sedges, such as yellow and purple nutsedge, do not tolerate low mowing.
