The Shippensburg men’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC Eastern Division preseason coaches poll released by league officials and is looking to exceed the expectations assigned to them by the league. Shippensburg returns 10 letterwinners from last season, including three starters. The team has lost just three letterwinners from last year and has brought in four new players. Among the team’s returning veterans are senior Jaren Gembe – one of two true seniors on the squad - and junior forward Will Royal - who led the team in scoring and rebounding last season. “Our number one goal is to make the playoffs and be one of those top four teams,” Gembe said. “We’re very competitive and have a lot of guys that are going to get playing time. It always makes you better as a team and we’ll be better both in practice and in games.” Head coach Dave Springer is back for his 10th season at the helm of the Red Raider pro- gram and has compiled 118 career victories at Shippensburg. “We want to compete, we want to improve and we want to achieve,” Springer said. “I really like the way that the veterans have come back after preparing themselves over the summer – they The team’s other senior is Jaren Gembe, a FORWARD came in ready to get after it.” veteran of more than 70 games with the Red Redshirt junior Will Royal made an immediate Raiders. Red Raider Basketball Picked No. 5 In Preseason PSAC East- ern Division Coaches Poll The Shippensburg men’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the preseason PSAC Eastern Division Coaches poll. Kutztown was picked to win the PSAC East, while Indiana (Pa.) was picked to win the PSAC West. SU was picked ahead of East Stroudsburg, Millers- ville, and Bloomsburg. The Red Raider basketball team concluded the 2008-09 season with a 12-15 record and a mixture of veteran guards with a plethora of young talent. The Red Raiders opened the sea- son with a 7-1 record, their best start in three years, while finishing the season ranked third in the conference for field goal percentage defense and fourth in blocked shots. SU played strong in the conference despite its 4-10 record, as five of those losses came by just five points or less. Among those decisions was a one-point loss to Sweet 16 opponent Kutztown. The roster has undergone significant changes. Completing his SU career last season was graduate guard Ryan Kraft, whose stellar Red Raider career ended just 14 points short of 1,000. In 105 career games, Kraft, the PSAC Lamar Jackson Western Division Rookie of the Year for the 2004-05 season, hit 192 three-pointers to rank just 10 short of the all-time school record of Matt Markle ‘92. in the Community

During Dave Springer’s tenure, his Red Raiders have become ac- tive members in the Shippensburg community. Springer is the Vice- President on the Advisory Board of the Boys and Girls Clubhouse in Shippensburg and has worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Pennsylvania to open a Shippensburg Clubhouse in March of 2004. Under his direction, many Red Raider players have worked as summer camp counselors and after-school counselors at the Boys and Girls Club. In March of 2006, the Red Raiders hosted “Slamfest,” a three-on- three basketball tournament to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club. That success has carried over to hosting the annual statewide Boys and Girls Club Basketball Tournament in 2007 and 2008 that featured 16 teams representing 11 organizations from across the en- tire state of Pennsylvania. Boys and Girls Clubs from Philadelphia, Reading, Scranton, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Erie, Pittsburgh, Cham- bersburg and Shippensburg were among the representatives. The Red Raider basketball team oversees the entire event, as the coaches are not allowed to be in the gym to help with the tourna- ment’s coordination. The players have helped make the tournament a success for the past three years that Shippensburg has hosted. The Shippensburg team has also participated in a program titled “Gear it Up,” which involved Harrisburg inner-city youth visiting the Shippensburg campus to interact with students, staff and faculty. The Red Raider team spoke with the youth about the importance of goals, academic preparation and life in college athletics. Also, the Red Raiders have conducted the National Association of Basketball Coaches Reading Program in Shippensburg area elemen- tary schools. The Red Raider players read to fourth and fifth grade students and facilitated discussion about the books. Additionally, Springer has coordinated an annual “Food for the Hun- gry Game.” The game is typically held the Tuesday before Thanksgiv- ing, and fans can receive free admission to the game with the donation of a canned good. All goods collected are donated to the local food bank, The King’s Kettle. The players also donate time stocking shelves and working at The King’s Kettle. “The Boys and Girls Club of the Shippensburg Area appreciates the involvement of the Shippensburg University men’s basketball team,” said Jackie Springer, the president of the advisory board for the Shippensburg Boys and Girls Club. “They volunteer whenever we request their help and make a positive impact on our club members.”
